Panamoz - phone them and get generic answering machine reply. Legit?

I want to order a camera from Panamoz. I phoned them as I want to pay by bank transfer to save some money but I get an answering machine. I am a bit suspicious as the recording is not even personalized. It is a generic reply i.e. the one that comes with the answering phone system. Is this normal for them? seems odd for a seller to do that.

i used the online form.. is that good enough or do you suggest separate email?
still - seems really unprofessional to not have even recorded a personalised greeting. they ARE legit right? seem to get good reviews on this site.
 
Email Tina and ask for price with payment by bank transfer, also mention TP. Process is slow due to time zones but delivery only takes 2-4 days from payment.

No problem. Just bear in mind their time zone difference. Reply will probably arrive tomorrow
 
Sometimes answering machines go wrong or someone forgets to setup/change the outgoing announcement, done it myself and had people telling me I was still on holiday :bonk:
 
I filled in the web form yesterday at 5:40pm. I was hoping for a reply by this morning to be honest.

Gramps - that was the original purpose of this post actually. To find out if this is just an anomaly. I figured someone must have phoned them before and was hoping someone would say, oh no thats broken. Normally they have a personalised reply :)
 
I sent 2 emails and used the contact us section on their site Monday last week, still no reply. I took my business elsewhere.
 
Odd as I've used them, correspondence via email, and it all went very smoothly from start to finish.

I also know someone who ordered from them a couple of weeks ago with no issues.

Did you try the online BACS order form that they ask you to use on their site?

They are still shipping. I know someone who ordered last Monday and got it all delivered on Thursday.

Legit? By buying from them you will be avoiding paying duty and tax unless you declare it once delivered. Your choice.
 
Hmm hope i don't have any problems coming back from holiday with it then !!! :( Maybe I should have gone with hdewcameras then as they give a VAT receipt.

Argh! Now i'm worried again.

Thanks for the tip about mailing support. Things went quickly and smoothly after that. I have made the payment and am now looking forward to a new camera!

Are you absolutely sure about that? I ask because on their website against each item that I've looked at it says "price includes all taxes and duties". That would appear to contradict what you're saying.
 
They can't provide a VAT receipt - i just checked.

Oh don't set him off. Essentially no, its not included but

A. They mislabel parcels as toys so its never picked up and
B. They will refund it should you get caught but
C. I've yet to hear of anyone having to pay it, but bear b. in mind

Although I class mine as a toy anyway so conscience is clear.

It means they will pay them if you get caught importing a misdeclared item (a criminal offence, incidentally, which always makes me wonder why topics about Panamoz are not closed down given that the forum rules are quite strict about discussing, encouraging or admitting to criminal offences).

If what you're saying is true then, that would suggest that this company is a bit, how shall we say, ... bent! Surely the UK authorities know about them and their MO so why do they allow it to continue unchallenged?

The problem is that the responsibility falls on the buyer as the importer, so you will get into trouble if found out. I think that the only reason it is not acted on is probably lack of staff and having bigger fish to fry!
 
I get the picture. Perhaps I'll stay away from them then and buy from a source where I'm not likely to drop myself in it. Thanks for making me aware of the pitfalls.
 
Just to clarify, the same caveat applies to the majority of companies/individuals supplying in this way from the far east, including sales on eBay and some others mentioned on this forum.

No problem. There are grey importers whom do actually pay the taxes- Digital Rev and HDEW have certainly been shown to on TP so far.

One of the site owners went through this with them- hence why they are still advertisers here and panamoz are not. I will RTM this post and hopefully one of them can point you in the direction.

I would be very interested to see this, also in proof that Panamoz do not pay taxes. I don't believe that it would be sustainable for either of them to pay the full tax as it would put their prices above bulk sellers such as Amazon.

One member has posted up their invoice from HDEW including VAT number (verified). One of the mods was in contact with Digital Rev and confirmed that taxes were paid, as have other members whom have confirmed that they have paid tax receipts on their packages. Panamoz lie on their declarations so that tax is not paid and therefore anyone buying with them and then not declaring and paying tax etc is breaking the law. It is fairly black and white really. :)
