Well I've got the touchpad which it looks like you'll need (or the Magic Mouse) to make full use of all it has to offer, so I can't wait for this.

I am looking forward to this too, having just gone back to a mac recently.

Personal preference - not for me thanks Steve:thumbsdown:

Load of superfluous gimmickry - I'll be sticking to Snow Leopard:wave:

I'm looking forward to it, but the last time I upgraded to snow leopard it caused some crashing on my on one suite and it took on one a couple of months to bring out a snow leopard fix, so I don't want to risk it in the first wave as it were.

air drop and the full screen apps and gestures look cool and i'm hoping mail will finally grow up and do some of the things it should have done years ago.

looking good to me, does it come with only one license as i need to upgrade two macs?

Can be download to multiple Macs - just need to use the same apple ID you use on the App Store

Bit of a mixed bag for me. Looking forward to full screen and the launchpad. Multi-touch, mission-control already had in Linux and don't really use. Resume I get anyway by suspending but could do without it easily enough.

The price is very good though and for me it's worth it just to get native fullscreen as I do a lot of reading/research on safari bookstore. Can fully understand why some may not fancy this upgrade.

feature 1 - gestures - I can't see a single thing that¹s new here, I can
already do all the gestures they showed with the exception of double tap,
they showed swiping, rotating and zooming in the Preview app with some
images - I can do these already. All they have done is made them animate.

Feature 2 - Full screen applications - all ilife stuff already has full
screen, the swipe to move back is better though.

Feature 3 - Mission control - that¹s exactly like expose, apart from you
have dashboard in there too

Feature 4 - Mac app store - never used it so far so not sure what the improvements are, seems like more improvements for developers.

Feature 5 - Launchpad - this might be better in practice, but if you drag
your applications folder to your dock you pretty much get this already

Feature 6 - Resume - I can see this being useful for some, but I never
turn my computer off, it just goes to sleep so I always leave it in a
state that when I come back to it my stuff is already there anyway. It
will only work for apple created apps anyway, it won't work in photoshop
etc until they release new versions ... IF they incorporate it of course

Feature 7 - and 8- Auto save and Versions - I like this because it has the
revisions - BUT I guarantee this will only be in Apple made applications,
I won't be able to take advantage of this in flash and photoshop or even
Word until they release new versions using the new API's. Since I don't really edit anything in any apple created apps I don't see me being able to take advantage of this feature, maybe it will make me buy and use the iWork stuff?

Feature 9 - Airdrop - Probably a good idea, but not something I'll
personally use, I don't have anyone who I need to regularly share stuff
with - probably more useful in a school or office environment. It's essentially something I can do right now with bonjour, they just put an attractive GUI around it.

Feature 10 - Mail - never use mail, so irrelevant to me, I use outlook,
which already has all these features.

So, to me this will be like the snow leopard update, the sum of it's parts
will probably create a nicer experience but no one feature blew me away,
but £20 isn't a bad price for that so overall I think it's a good upgrade. It is just refinements though and not the mind blowing new features that Apple seem to claim it has.

Nice to see Apple continuing their green philosophy by only making it available as a download through the AppStore. No more boxes and packaging!

I run OS X on a home built pc. Too scared to install the update lol so will let some other hackintoshers do it first :)

if they put this on an iPad, then I would be interested, for now i'm sticking with snow leopard

:)

if they put lion on an iPad?

that wouldn't work at all, it's not an OS optimised for a multi touch tablet, it would be a horrible experience, I've tried using my iMac with a vnc server on my ipad and it's then that you really see how the OS ha to be entirely different to work on a touch based device

I have a virtual machine running the beta version of Lion, and although a lot of new features are advertised, they aren't all immediately obvious. One major thing which will take some getting used to is the scrolling. I thought my copy had gone wrong, but the scrolling is upside down! Apparently this is to make it more like an ipad/iphone, where you slide your finger down the screen to go up and vice versa. It's a bit weird though, and who knows if it will make it to the finak releaze, but to me it suggests one thing - a touch screen Mac is on the horizon.
Plenty of PC manufacturers have released touch screen all in ones, so it will make sense for Apple to follow....

I am very tempted to upgrade although think I will see what others think first and maybe have a play.

Not sure what I make about that scrolling thing, would take some getting used to.

It seems so natural on a touchscreen devive, yiu don't even think about it, but as soon as its a mouse/trackpad it seems wrong. I guess that'syears of conditioning for you!

cant wait........... server built in ....lots of nice tweaks and cheap as chips ........bill should take note and drop his prices to match

.
I'm not so sure. I saw Steve Jobs quoted as saying that despite investing a fortune in developing touch screen technology it just doesn't work ergonomically on an upright screen, which makes me think that what we'll see is more interface devices like the magic mouse and touch pad to make use of the new technology. He also made the point that interfacing with a PC hasn't changed since the first home computers - it's still keyboard/mouse /pointer and that needs to change if the PC is to progress.

Then again Mr Jobs has been known to throw people off the scent. Wasn't an Apple tablet device rumour denied....then hey presto, what do we have?
I remember a while ago a rumour circulating about an iMac where it basically pivots flat and can be used as a touchscreen. Was a while ago and probably not correct, but could there be an ounce of truth in it?

I'm not a huge fan of the idea anyway really, I see no benefits to the way I use my computer to justify the extra expense, but I guess that may change if something inspires me.

hmm im not sure about the new OS, yes some good features, and yes a very good price, but the problem with any new OS is having to reinstall all applications, and having to back up and then put back on you documents and photos, if it could just be installed over the top i wouldn't even think about buying it, but as it is im not so sure

You dont have to do that with lion, it installs "in place" from the mac app store

really, wow i must have fallen asleep in the keynotes (just not the same with no steve)
so all my applications will stay in place?? and i dont need to reinstall everything??

Jack

when did you have to do this?

leopard and snow leopard didn't have to reinstall applications either, in fact i can't remember the last OSX that required that to happen

when was the last time windows had to do that then? Must have been a while back?

I believe XP to vista and vista to 7 can be upgraded unless changing from 32 to 64 bit, and although XP to 7 cant be directly upgraded there are tools from Microsoft to make it as painless as possible. I however prefer clean installs as I just never trust them, Windows and Mac! Guess that's what comes from being an OCD computer geek :D
