Options for a wedding on a budget....?

Well, as the title might suggest, I've taken the insane decision to get married.

For reason I won't go into, we're going to have the day, not once...but twice! I know...:)

The first is going to be a no frills ceremony for family and friends who can't make the second. As the second round will be the 'big day', we have a small budget for this first time, but would like some reasonabl shots of the ceremony and a few afterwards. Not hundreds - five or six reasonably good ones would be fine.

Can't think of anyone who will be there who is any good with a camera. I'd be my first choice, but obviously that won't be practical!

I don't think we have the budget to hire someone.

What sort of money are we talking? I don't expect the earth - I know if you want the best that doesn't come cheap. Good is good enough for us.

When you hire a photographer, do you have to hire them for the day? How does it work?

This might be a silly question but it's not something I've ever thought of doing, so never really looked into it.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

I think your best bet will be to contact some local photographers and explain what you want to them and see how much they would charge. Some will be willing to do things others aren't, and some may well be willing to incorporate it at a discounted rate if you book them for the 'big day' as well.

Edit - if you include your location in your posts there may be some local photographers on the forum who could help or at least give you a starting point for contacting others.

Just get a throw away camera get uncle bob to do it for the hour needed. Frame well, pose for your 5/6 shots done and dusted

I would agree, chat to local photographers and see if you can tie it in to the BIG day too maybe. Basically it sounds like you are asking for an hours work, which some will be happy to do dependent on other bookings and when.

Seems a good option

With only 5 or 6 pics just give a guest your camera set to auto.

You might find a local willing to do it, but the trouble is for just a few pics they'd still have to charge enough to make it worth their while, even if they have no other bookings on that day shutting the studio to take 5-6 pics might mean they miss a proper booking for another day, if they have to have someone cover the studio for them it's a days pay before they start.
Then theres tax, petrol etc, and time editing the pics.

If I was local I would do it for free just the the experience.

Cant say what the images would be like tho.. But I know how to use a camera, but never did weddings.

Is there a member here who's trying to get some experience under their belt that would fancy a go? The number of people complaining it's impossible to get an 'in' they should be queueing up.

I imagine people are too scared to volunteer in case they get told they should be charging more by some of the regular posters on here. :p

But its a win win for both parts,

The OP gets the shots he wants for free/low cost and the person doing the photos get that extra bit of experience and possible payment.

assuming the ceremony is in west dorset I might be able to do it on an hourly rate depending exactly where, when and what you want.

pm me if you'd like to discuss further ( i'm about 5 miles west of Lyme just over the devon border)

I've said it before, but it generally gets ignored:

Read the threads - working for free to build a portfolio = fine (a great way to start even - in fact it was probably the way in for most of the wedding photographers on this site)

Pretending you can earn money by charging peanuts = stupid.

But everyone seems to think that all pro's want to do is to maintain some kind of price fixing. It's not true but it'll not stop us being accused of it :bang: Whilst trying to give sound advice for a strong business people can't wait to accuse us of creating barriers :cuckoo:

that

the only reason i'd be happy to do this on an hourly rate is if its extremely local , and I can just take a couple of hours leave on my day job to fit it in.

its doubtful that any full timer would do it , unless they just happen to have a window or a cancellation where they've already trousered a deposit

Try looking on wedding related Facebook groups. There are no shortage of photographers who are starting out and happy to shoot a wedding for tuppence ha'penny.

Whilst it's true that in general you get what you pay for, we all had to start somewhere and if you weed out the ones who clearly don't have any clue, you may be able to find someone who has the right skills/personality to make it but just starting out.

Far too far away for me unfortunately, if only the op was in the midlands :bang:

Post in the business section here - see what offers you get

It would be useful to have a date. I took the photos at my sister-in-law's wedding at the beginning of August and depending on what you want, I may be happy to consider it. PM me if you are interested.

I have a 450D, no back-up camera, and shot my sister-in-law's wedding with a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for the indoor shots and a Sigma 17-70 for everything else, backed up with a 430EX flash when required. That was the first proper time I have done people shots as I normally do railway photography, although I have had my railway photographs published in magazines and books and also one in a calendar, so I like to think I know my camera.

I would be happy to let you see what I took that day at the wedding if it is of interest, but assuming around a 2 hour drive each way, depending on where you are, and the fact it would take all day, including driving, plus around 4-6 hours or so of editing after, I would need to get something out of it.

I am not looking to become a wedding photographer, but I did enjoy my day out behind the camera, although it was very tiring and opened my eyes as to why proper wedding photographers charge what they do.

Anyway, hopefully this will be helpful for you.
