Hi guys have been serching the net and racking my brains on a camera upgrade and I think im going to go for a 7d but opinions from any 7d owners would be a great help
Thanks

You'll get annoyed every time you read a thread from someone who says the IQ of their 5D mk III is so much better than their old 7D ;)

A.

Then you'll realise how much less than the 5D3 owner you've spent and relax because you're not a pixel-peeper.

I've had mine for nearly four years, a superb bit of kit and I haven't felt the need to change yet, depending on what the 7D2 offers when/if it appears I may change then.

70d is a viable alternative if you want something of similar performance with a few more modern features.

And don't forget to read about the poor high ISO noise performance! Wish I had gone Nikon.

Love mine, it's a fantastic camera.
The high-ISO noise "issue" only seems to affect/annoy some people.

Does your one perform well when using low light / high ISO? If so I probably need to send it to Canon for repair ... But when I googled I see it's a common problem

This indeed, too may people harp on about how the 5D3 is so wonderful and *****s miracles compared to a 7D, 60D and all the other crops.

Yes it does, it is an absolutely fantastic camera but at 2 and a half times the price of the 7D so OBVIOUSLY its a superior camera in quality terms... jesus, would you expect a £200 TV to outperform a £15k 4k TV in the image quality stakes?!

Its simple as this, people seem to moan like hell about the "old hat" sensor in the 7D, 60D and the others, personally I think it produces stunning images and I happily use it at 3200 and even 6400 if needed.

Make what you will out of that, I agree with the person above, if your a pixel peeper you may hae a problem at high iso, if not then excellent camera.

Well enough for my purposes... Good at 1600, pretty good at 2000 and useable at 3200. Having said that, I don't pixel-peep, and rarely print large.

Alot of the high-ISO noise complaints have 100% crops to show the issue - I never view photos this closely, so don't really see it as an issue.

Definitely not a fan.

Mine is horrible in all areas except A.F. which is top drawer, much better A.F. than my 1D MK iv

Nice camera, shame about the sensor or maybe its the over strong low pass filter

Did take some good photos with mine, but have to say its not as good as the old 5D I went back to using.
I don't consider viewing at 100% to be pixel peeping, more like essential when applying sharpening.

Must be something not quite right when photos from my daughters 550D which uses basically the same sensor are better than those from the 7D

It would have been great if it used the Sony made 16mp sensor found in several other makes of cameras because function and handling wise it was superb

What ever you do, test one prior to parting money.

Mine was broken on arrival, brand new in feb this year, AF was intermittent at best (like quite a few other people, I had to send it for repair) and I also thought/think the noise from low ISO was very poor considering its position in class and compared to lower level bodies.

Loads of folks praise it endlessly but for me it was/is a patchy disappointment. If you test it and are happy then alls well.

Love mine to bits and much prefer it to my old 500d in all respects :)

What do you want to upgrade from and why? What do you take photos of?

I want to upgrade from my 1100d and to be honest im in to all different types of photography not just one kind and ideally I want my camera to be the same

I had one and its a great camera and took around 3.5K shots so knew it pretty well, but in the end the ISO noise made me sell and "downgraded" to a 60D which found it much much better and would consider getting the 60D again (although more likely a 70D, which given the price may well be a better option once a few people have tried them out)

Another thing you;d like about the 60/70D is the articulated screen, very handy for getting down low for bug\flower shots - one thing I really do miss.

My 7D transformed the hobby for me and I absolutely adore it. Similar to a post above, I'm waiting to see the Mk2 as it's likely the only thing I'd swap it for at the moment.

It is quite unforgiving of technical mistakes but that's exactly what it did for my hobby, it forced me to learn how learn how do things correctly and my pictures improved dramatically as a result. Happy camper :)

Congrats mate. Any tips to share?

I shoot birds with a pair of 7Ds and am very happy with them. The AF is a real step up on the xxD series (though the new 70D looks to have a similar AF system) and the camera is capable of delivering excellent results. There is a lot of talk about the ISO performance, some of the complaints are so far from what I have experienced that I can only assume there is some extreme sample variation. Personally I am happy with the ISO performance and happily shoot it upto 3200. At higher ISOs you do need to nail the exposure as there isn't much wiggle room (my 5DmkII is far more forgiving) for recovering underexposed shots. I find that mine have a tendancy to slightly underexpose so I tend to set the exposure slightly over what the camera thinks (just 1/3rd of a stop seems to do the job).

Read through the 7D owners thread, if you get past all the comments about noise etc there are links to settings to reduce these issues.

I love mine, shoot birds macro and motorsport as a hobby so not printing large and do not pixel peep. It has produced some fantastic images for me (or is that me just being good ) seriouly though read the owners thread, if I remember when I get home this evening or tomorrow I will send you the links I found to be useful

Thought I'd chip in my thoughts. Picked a 7D up yesterday, my initial thoughts over my initial 500D, this thing is heavy! But I like it!
The layout is completely different to a xxx/xD body and it'll take some time to get used to I think. A lot of reading to do and experimenting to get my hands used to where they need to be etc.
I've test shot the camera upto 1600 iso and haven't noticed much noise, it's there, just not as bad as people are making it out to be. Or I might just be less fussy.

Try using the 7D for a couple of weeks then have a go at using the 500D. When I went back to the 550D to use as a second body for an event it felt like a plastic toy! lol

I've already experienced that (in a sense) picked up the 500D this morning and laughed at how I used to think it was heavy.

lol, you should try one of the 1D bodies with a 50-500OS on, now thats heavy!

Oh yes. First and foremost learn the darned thing! I'd used it for a couple of weeks using existing camera knowledge and got frustrated as hell with it.
I then bought David Busch's book on the 7D and set about learning it properly. If I hadn't done that I'd probably have just sold it as "not for me" and that would have been a very silly thing to do.

Should try using a 1D mkiv with a 600mm f4 attached if you think that's heavy :-/

Thanks for all the feed back and comments guys. Poped into my local camera shop yesterday to have a look at the 7d. All in all was quite impressed nice weight to it and felt comfortable to hold opviously he was trying to sell it so gave me all the talk. Although he did advise me it would be quite a jump from the 1100d.
when I came back I was scouring the the net and started looking ar the 50d. I have read quite a few reviews and thay all seem to be quite positive and to be honest its alot more im my price range at the mo.
So as you guys are so good at this opinions on the 50d please.

I've had my 7D for around 3 years, and I'm a kit junkie and usually update my kit within a couple of years, but have no plans to replace it yet.

I've shot wildlife, motorsport, portraits & landscape with it without an major issues. What I will say is that you need to set it up correctly to get the best from it, so do read the owners thread, especially the bits about settings.

It isn't the best for noise, but you need to expose correctly. The only "problem" I have is that I tend to under expose quite often (which really doesn't help the noise), but I think that's more down to me than the camera. I now tend to dial in + 0.3 to +0.6 EV and make sure I expose to the right of the histogram.

I also found back button focusing a real benefit on the 7D and will continue to use it, even when I add a 6D to the family in the next week or so.

One thing I will add - it doesn't like poor glass. I combine with either the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 for general stuff or a 70-200 f2.8 for motorsport/wildlife.

The 50D is a good camera, but not in quite the same league as the 7D. I was waiting for the Canon announcement of the 50D replacement, intending to get a 50D when the price dropped. The 7D however had a specification that convinced me that the extra expense was worth it. That was four years ago and I don't regret the decision to spend the extra cash. I would only get the 50D if you are really pushed on the finance front, else get a 7D, prices may soften with the new 70D now available.

I've had my 7D for around a year now, and I love it.

Although the 70D is a little more 'state of the art', unlike the robust magnesium alloy bodied 7D, it has a Polycarbonate body.

If you want to be taking fast multi-frame action shots, the 7D is the fastest 'kid on the block'.

Obviously the 7d would be choice but do you think I would be 'running before I can walk' with it.
I want to make a decision soon but obviously not the wrong one.
So what will it be
50d for an improver
Or sod it the 7d is better and 'get some nuts'

I had mines out for the first time today. Not managed to sort it all out how I want it to operate. But oh my goodness is it a beast. Out with a friend who has a 550D and was shooting quicker and on target so much quicker than what I was used too. I knew it would be faster, just not that faster. I need to get used to a few things, such as where buttons are and what certain ones do (back wheel and front jog wheel control different settings), and I feel the sensor exposes differently compared to my 500D. Will need to do a test over the next few days.

All in, I'm certainly not regretting the upgrade, I'd personally say, just jump in the deep end. you'll love it!

What can I say, fantastic camera. I also now have a 6D but the 7D still gets waay more use.

I know I said it before but I'll say it again, go with the 60D, £360-400 second hand and if I had to choose between it and the 7D (and I did) I would choose the 60D
