Operating System - Vista

Worry over!!! I restarted again and it is now using up 80gb on C so thats more like it.

Thanks, fellas. :thumbs::thumbs:

Which is exactly why I asked the question ;)

ahh, right OK!

Did you include the space used up by System Restore?

Right Click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings (Task Panel) > System Protection Tab

to see how much space it's using.

Dammit, it doesn't show you - thought it did.. soz :(

I think its going to be the system restore/previous version files that are the problem...they are in the "System Volume Information" folder, which you don't have access to - even to check the files sizes!

System restore can use up to 15% of your IIRC...

...looks like we have sucessfuly hijacked this thread! :bonk:

ooh so we have!! Sorry... that was me!:nono:

Back to who prefers Vista or XP!

I prefer XP, because it's quite a bit faster than Vista, which only seems to run well on dual core machines with a gigabyte of RAM or more.

I think I'll switch to Linux after support for Windows XP Pro ends. I can make Linux run with about the same features Windows XP has using only about 40-80 MB of RAM.
Hell, without desktop icons, it runs like a breeze on my Pentium 2 350 MHz with 192 MB of RAM... and a GeForce 5700FX :D

If only my CorelDraw 11 Suite ran under Wine :(

I like Vista. It's quick for me. That said, I do have 4gb of RAM.

Have you tried right clicking the C:\ drive in explorer and doing a disk clean up to remove your temporary files?

Vista has a few hidden folders about the place that seem to swell. On a fairly recently formatted and reinstalled system my discrepancy is up to about 10GB and all my personal data is in a seperate partition.

hyberfil.sys and pagefile.sys will typically take up about 1-4x the amount of memory you have.

Also, it might be worth scheduling chkdisk to run when you next start up. I'm not sure how to select that option through the GUI off the top of my head as I don't have access to my Vista machine at the moment to check. I suspect you can get there by looking at the properties of the drive (right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer, click Properties) or through computer managment.

Hope this helps in some way.

I have found the system restore settings and made the size smaller... this has given me a lot more space... thanks to PXl8

I feel that my pc was faster under XP:'( But I can't be bothered to go back now everything is set up.

Janice is it possible that Vista has retained a copy of your original windows files before you upgraded to Vista hence the hard drive useage?

I didnt upgrade to Vista... it was already on my laptop when I got it.

However.. I have lots of space now.. for all my music and photos so I'm a happy bunny again!

Well i have been running vista ultimate 64bit for about 3 months now since building myself a new quad core machine with 4 gig ram and it runs like a dream, easy to get all the drivers i need for all my hardware and printers, ps cs3 and lightroom all run fine under vista as doesn photomatix and all the other software i use. I really like vista now and as said after a few recent hotfixes that have sorted such issues as file transfer speeds i am more than happy with it

Thanks for all the help people!

Having spent all night setting it up as I now want it. Its looking good! I'm sure i'll get my fair share of problems sooner or later but as it stands now, its quick and does what I tell it too!

I've been running 64bit vista premium on core 2 duo cpu with 2gb ram since the summer. Runs fine to me and has never crashed once since first getting it. I use PS CS3 with it and it works like a dream. Only advice I would give is check you can get the 64 bit drivers for your hardware before changing over. I had to buy a new ADSL modem cos the old one was not getting updated softwre for it.

Vista Home Premium here since launch. Never crashed yet. Running CS2 without any issues (apart from the install fix detailed above).

The highlight of Vista is of course the chess :D

Pfft - youngsters! I'm using Windows 2000 Pro - ok so I can't run Lightroom or CS3 but it's the one of the most stable Operating Systems that I've ever come across. My main PC runs 24/7 and hasn't needed a reboot for months.

 to XP and Vista :D

Windows Vista Premium on my laptop.

Faultless, Lightroom runs perfect and the whole laptop runs very fast, with 2GB RAM, Duo Core processors. Norton 360 runs in the background, automatically defragmenting the hard drive on weekly basis.

One problem I did have was with a graphics driver update which completely buggered the clarity of the monitor and got fuzziness. A factory reinstall of Vista cured this, but I;d have liked to have seen the OS completely remove all traces of the update in the first place.

Just wondering what you people use? Up to now for the past 5 years or so I have been using XP Home Edition, it finally coughed and spluttered its last breath yesterday morning as I managed to, erm well, break it whilst farting around with the RAM chips etc :( A sad day indeed......

Although I have between now and yesterday morning bought a new desktop pc, on vista....... Now, who uses this and what do you think of it? I'm not too sure, the system itself can run rings around my old XP machine, speed and memory etc is much better, not the mention the lovley 19in widescreen glass monitor :D

Its just I am worried that a lot of programs that I use now arent compatible with vista, Photoshop CS2 for example. I have browsed the web and im still not sure if I can use it? Also I'm looking for the equivilent to the windows XP raw thumbnail viewer for my .NEF files, but cant find anything compatible with visa?

Is Vista the way forward? Lets here your views people! :D

Vista is good if your PC is fast enough. Personally none if my PC's quite cut it, XP is blazingly fast, Vista coughs and splutters. I also struggle to find things as quickly in Vista.

Sticking with XP until I have a monster rigg. It might be an apple ;)

XP is just as stable as 2000 ever was, at least now it is. It's just 2K with tellytubby visuals!!
