Just wondering what you people use? Up to now for the past 5 years or so I have been using XP Home Edition, it finally coughed and spluttered its last breath yesterday morning as I managed to, erm well, break it whilst farting around with the RAM chips etc :( A sad day indeed......

Although I have between now and yesterday morning bought a new desktop pc, on vista....... Now, who uses this and what do you think of it? I'm not too sure, the system itself can run rings around my old XP machine, speed and memory etc is much better, not the mention the lovley 19in widescreen glass monitor :D

Its just I am worried that a lot of programs that I use now arent compatible with vista, Photoshop CS2 for example. I have browsed the web and im still not sure if I can use it? Also I'm looking for the equivilent to the windows XP raw thumbnail viewer for my .NEF files, but cant find anything compatible with visa?

Is Vista the way forward? Lets here your views people! :D

Just wondering what you guys (and the odd lady) use?

Am I the "odd lady" ???? :D

They don't come much odder than me!! :D

I use Vista!! :D and XP too!

 Sorry Janice, I posted this on another forum too, a more male orientated one so I just coppied and pasted onto this forum! Its been ammended now :D

I bought a new PC recently with Vista. On paper the machine was excellent, but it seemed to run slower than the 2-year old box it replaced. I had some trouble with some hardware on it so reinstalled XP and it now flies along.
I do quite like the interface on Vista, but I'd rather have a machine that runs nice and quick than one which looks pretty.

Other people's mileage seems to vary - I guess it's down to each persons prefrence. SP1 for Vista is due imminently so I might give it another go and see if they've added a patch to "cut out the slow crap" :)

There have been a few hot fixes for Vista that addressed some performance issues but I've not noticed any real problems with speed. One of my machines is a AMD XP1700+ with 1.5gb of ram and a 80gb HD, it's used for web, email, and office tasks and runs Vista quite happily.

Mine is a Dual core processor with 2GBs of RAM. It is nice and quick though.

How about CS2, does anyone use this with Vista?

I've been using Vista as a replacement for XP for about 6 months now, i've not really had many issues with software not working because it's been out long enough for most software companies to sort a patch/update to support vista, i have a couple of games that refuse to work though, but that's from back when i first bought vista and i haven't tried since.

As an OS, vista is great once you get used to it providing your system has enough memory to keep up with it, i'm using a Athlon X2 processor with 2gb RAM (i should buy more ram as it's so cheap but i don't need it tbh) and i haven't had any issues with speed. I don't think i would go back to XP now tbh.

Mine's also a dual core with a couple of GB - just seems to run better under XP than it does under Vista!

I ran CS2 without issue. Upgraded to CS3 a few months ago which I think is marginally quicker, regardless of OS.

CS2 runs under Vista quite happily. The first time it runs it needs to be done as Admin (right click the icon and select Run As Admin) as the register window that appears needs Admin rights to access the registry in order to complete. After that it can be run as a normal user and everything is fine

Adobe never said it wasn't compatible with Vista, only that they didn't support it.

I'm sticking with xp pro for now until I go quad core or change to mac, maybe :) Tried 32bit Vista and it was slow compared to xp, have yet to try 64bit version which should be much better with the right components, ideally you want 4gb ram, dual or quad core etc..

Thanks, another question if I may :D

32bit and 64bit, whats the difference, how to I find out what I have and would it be worth upgrading to 64bit from 32bit?

I used to understand all this computer stuff, its long since forgotten!

I think that only 64-bit applications can fully take advantage of a 64-bit OS. You might find Windows boots a bit quicker, and you'll certainly need to go 64-bit for more than 4GB memory, but I've not noticed any drastic performance increase between 32-bit XP and the 64-bit offering.

64bit is faster and can access more than 2gb of memory. Downside is compatibility with some drivers (printers are a common one) and apps but that will improve with time.

I use Vista with CS2 and there are no issues. Works great.

Going back to your original question, there is no real thumbnail viewer for RAW files yet - Microsoft haven't released one for Vista.

However, you can use Adobe Bridge to access the files - which I find a little slower but much better.

again, i'm using 64bit vista and have had no driver probs, can't compare performance to 32bit though as i haven't used 32bit.

With Vista you need to download the codec from the camera maker. Windows Photo gallery will automatically detect raw files and try to install the file or point you at the website to download it.

My new laptop running Vista is telling me I have used up 136gb of my hard drive........ but when I add up the size of all folders on the drive it comes to 60gb.

Bit of a huge discrepency?

Does that include hidden files/folders and the windows page file?

I bought Photoshop Elements 6 to run on my Vista machine (2.66 Ghz Intel Core2duo) and although it successfully installs, it doesn't run.

I've been through over ten pages of printed guidance Adobe Tech Support sent me, including re-installing the OS and then installing PSE 6 with just the basic drivers and without any anti-virus etc. running.

The funny thing was, the trial version of PSE 6 ran okay.

Anyway, I've now got an older box running XP just for PSE 6. A bit annoying really. And XP seems so agile compared to Vista.

Also I'm looking for the equivilent to the windows XP raw thumbnail viewer for my .NEF files, but cant find anything compatible with visa?

When I first tried viewing .NEF files in Vista with the Windows Photo Gallery, I was prompted to download a .NEF file viewer plug in from Microsoft. Have you got Windows update switched on?

I still have the downloaded installation file for this. If you are on MSN Messenger or Skype I can send it you.

Does that include hidden files/folders and the windows page file?

well it includes hidden files/folders yes. I deleted loads of photos as it was half full already... and it doesnt seem to have got rid of them. I have emptied the recycle bin and restarted.. and although they have gone.. the drive says it is still half full.

Janice, how did you get the size of all the files and folders?

I'm running Vista, and like it a lot, find it runs much slicker than XP, it seems to handle resources (memory/processor) much better.

The only issue I had was it didn't like a fire-wire card reader, so I changed it to a USB.

I couldn't ever go back to XP after all the much improved functionality of Vista.

Janice, how did you get the size of all the files and folders?

i right clicked on each folder and looked at the properties... was that wrong?

I think it will be the recycle bin (takes 10% of your disk space), any hibernate files and restore points - all of which aren't counted when you get properties on the files contained in your C: drive.

No, just ruling out the obvious.

In the root of c:\ do you see hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys?

just realised I didn't answer the OP's post!

I've been using Vista for a while now at work. I have is installed on a separate partition on an Octo-core Mac with 4GB RAM (although Vista seems to only want to recognise 2GB for some reason). I must admit that I think XP is a little snappier with regards to the GUI, i.e. opening and minimising windows etc. but once an app is up an running there isn't much difference TBH. That could easily be solved by switching off all the Aero loveliness!

Seeing as you already have Vista installed on the new machine I'd recommend sticking with it, as other people have mentioned most of the commercial programs have patches available to make them work with Vista now.

All this reminds a bit of the Win98 - XP transition.....

she won't see these unless she has unticked the "show protected system files" in folder options...

Hey everyone.

I am using Vista Home Prem at the moment, but i went from hating it to liking it since i put the 2Gb RAM in.

I previously had 1Gb RAM in here and it was like a fat wet dog when the sun is out, really really slow, but now i have got the 2Gb in there it fly's :)

no neither of these appear in the root of C

I'm running a dual boot Vista x64 Ultimate and XP x64 Pro system on a C2Duo E6400 (overclocked to 3.2Ghz) with 4Gb RAM. (you need 64bit to utilise the full 4Gb otherwise 32bit can only handle 3Gb (IIRC))

I find Vista a real pleasure to use and CS3 works fine. I use CS3 and some work stuff on Vista (Visual Studio 2005). I play games and do all my downloading etc on XP, so as to not clutter my Vista install too much.

The only issue I have had is my internal card reader won't work in Vista but will in XP. This has a USB port and it works fine! (I have an external one that runs ok though)

Ok.

Open Computer and then press ALT and the menus will appear.

Go to Tools > Folder Options

In the View tab make sure that

Show hidden files and folders

is ticked and that

Hide protected operating system files

isn't ticked.

Also, are you using a single user account or have you created more than one? I suspect the missing files might be in another user account which won't be counted unless the above options are set.

Correction - you'll need the right permissions to read the folders for the other users.

and exactly why I already had it done from when I got it!!;)

I usually have my paging file on another drive from Windows but I only have one drive on here so its on C.

Only one user account.

If you can't see hyberfil or pagefile you're not seeing all the files on the machine :(

sorry, found it.............hyberfile is 2gb pagefile is 4gb

Did you include the space used up by System Restore?

Right Click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings (Task Panel) > System Protection Tab

to see how much space it's using.

Dammit, it doesn't show you - thought it did.. soz :(

maybe its like a bloke and lies about the size!
