Is the kinetic mechanism damaged beyond repair or is it a simple replacement job?

I'm amazed that it cracked in the first place.

i'm guessing the same with the crack. I'm no watch buff though

Is it the crack in the movement back plate, I know its obvious but is it something else

It's actually on the rotor, but yes

The rest of the watch is wrecked too...seems they don't like stone floors, especially when they are thrown onto them

I can't believe you guys cannot spot a fake when you see one.
My mate brought me a real one back from a hol in Thailand.

The watch actually looks not to bad when it's all screwed together, until you start looking closely. It's about £4k worth, or rather it was....it's scrap now

I hope that's not your watch!

I would have thought being thrown on to a floor wouldn't cause this kind of damage, or any for that matter. Unless it was thrown out of a multi-story building

Have you seen the fake cameras that lot make?

Not very convincing :shake:

Is it a write off?

I have a small chip in the crystal which I'm ignoring as I really don't what to know how much that will cost. I hate to think what that sort of damage costs.

I'd says so, the case is damaged and the movement is u/s. I've got it to check over to see if I can salvage any parts from it (still to try and figure out how much to offer the guy for it) .

Like you I've got a chip in the crystal on mine, it's minute, but it's there, so I was hoping to use the one from this to replace it as Rolex will only fit a new crystal as part of a service, so you're looking at the guts of £500. Unfortunately the one of this watch has a scratch on it, so it's not really any better than the one I've got :bang:

There is a firm in America which fits sapphire crystals to replace the old acrylic lenses. They only charge a couple of hundred dollars tops including cleaning and pressure testing.

I have a small scratch on this one too but you can only see it if you really look for it. I don't know when the chip appeared but that is tiny also. The watch has a pretty hard life as I rarely take it off whatever I'm doing, I should probably get it serviced in the next couple of years.

It doesn't look like a big job to do, all you need is the right press. This one is an sapphire crystal model - it's only 3 years old :shake:

I didn't realise they were still using acrylic 3 years ago, does it depend on the model?

Mine is 4 years old.

Me neither, but that's the story I was given. The damage is really weird, I would have expected the case to be battered or at least scuffed, given the level of internal havoc, but apart from some (I would assume) repairable spreading of one set of lugs it's unmarked.

Sorry, I mean sapphire, not acrylic. :bonk: They stopped fitting acrylic crystals to the Datejust a long time ago...

Flash, are you a watch repair-man, or is this just a hobby too?

I can't believe nobody has complimented you on taking an excellent photo. Shame on you all!

I'm amazed that the counterweight has cracked!

Could you not in theory just remove the counterweight and just use the mechanism as manual wind only?

Something must be damaged deeper inside as the winder doesn't engage, so it can't be wound manually. The hands have fallen off anyway

It would be naughty to suggest you get hold of a knock-off and fit the back onto it, wouldn't it? E-bay watch-hunters beware!!!

BTW, the most obvious problem is that the battery has become dislodged.

Battery? Nod, dude, what battery?

It may have been, I guess so :p .. That, or it is a fakeR, and hence it may well be missing the battery

Oddly my watch is missing it's battery too, but I can't understand how it still manages to work
