Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Hi Marcia. although I've no experience of either camera, I do have the OM3, which has the same innards as the OM1 II. To say I'm impressed is an under-statement.
Thank you Stephen! It’s always good to have some feedback from real life users, and especially people you know. I certainly like the ones you’ve posted today, but of course a lot is down to the photographer!
Thank you again

Both hubby and myself have OM1’s, and they are mostly used for birds, dragonflies, and general wildlife. Given the £500 cashback on the OM1 MK2 at the moment, has anyone upgraded from an OM1 to an OM1 MK2, and have you found the upgrade beneficial for our type of photography please? I have done a search but came up blank! Many thanks, Marcia
.... I replaced one of my two E-M1X with a OM-1 ('mk1') but the control dials are randomly very sticky and the issue has not been resolved even by sending to OM Portugal.

I haven't seen or read anything which suggests it's a no-brainer to upgrade to a Mk2 OM-1. Personally, I am extremely disappointed with how the sticky dials actually can lose me shots and don't trust a Mk2 being very different. The E-M1X control dials are perfect regardless of the weather.

For what it's worth, my advice would be to wait for a Mk3 OM-1.

If you check out my Flickr pages (link in my signature below) you'll see I shoot wildlife (I also Admin a large UK dragonflies group on Facebook).

And as yet I’ve never had this problem with my mki . From online observations I think it tends to effect the first early batch of mki cameras not the later ones once they knew of the problem

.... I assume you are referring to my reported problem about random extremely sticky (sometimes stuck!) Control Dials, Jeff.

Mine was one of the first delivered in the UK and in March 2024 OM helped the problem in their repair department in Portugal but the issue has returned. So I will be sending it to them again. Meanwhile, thank goodness I kept one of my trusty E-M1X bodies! E-M1X + 50-200mm F/2.8 Pro is currently my most frequently used combo.

So subject to what OM Portugal manage this time, I am waiting for a OM-1 Mk3 (after physically checking out the dials!) or ideally a E-M1X Mk2 which is very unlikely to happen.

@RedRobin

So if I upgrade to the OM1 MK2 (as I aspire to doing) you'd recommend keeping the EM1X and not sell it to offset the cost?

.... Selling one of my two E-M1X to offset the cost of the OM-1 ('mk1') was exactly why I did it.

If you can afford to keep the E-M1X until at least you have bought and used the OM-1 Mk2, I would do so. I only suggest this because I personally have not had a good experience with my OM-1's badly sticking and disabling Control Dials. Others have not had this problem and I want to physically handle a OM-1 Mk2 if I get the opportunity to compare the Control Dials with my E-M1X.

If you buy a OM-1 Mk2 from somewhere like Ffordes they will take your E-M1X retrospectively at a later date. Sure, you can get more money selling privately but you then have all the faffing about. In fact with most established retailers you can send a camera back within a 30(?)-day period.

From long term direct experience I have no hesitation in recommending Ffordes :

Ffordes also have used bodies in stock.

Cheers Robin.

Yes I bought my EM1 MK2 from Fforbes.

Still saving at the moment and I'll go for a grey one when I go for it.

Fforbes' used OM1 MK2's are more expensive than a grey new one.

.... Hi Terry, I think you'll find that Fforde's used OM-1 Mk2's range in price according to condition, the most expensive being 'Mint' followed by 'Excellent'.

I nearly suggested the grey option to you. I highly recommend HDEW and would describe them as 'pale grey' as they are well established with UK premises. I have used them for many years.

at the moment cotswold cameras are taking the Mickey out of u.k prices and also offering a 3 year u.k warranty . my recent lens purchase has boosted this opinion of them fully tracked by DPS EXPRESS from Hong Kong to the door in 8 days and a £400+ saving .. my lad has also used them in the last month with similar results and saved over 4k on u.k prices camera and lenses

I agree with this 100%.

I also bought 2 lenses from Olympus on the 10th November.

They have not even left Germany yet. Current ETA is the 20th

.... VERY interesting indeed! And especially to me because every Sunday I shoot usually between 1,000 and 2,000 RAW images of women's football ~ I am an independent "Staff" (they tell me) photographer for a club with two Ladies teams over 16yo. Plus I have replaced my 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro with the new 50-200mm F/2.8 Pro and I love how it further enables me and it's not just extra reach.

What an excellent real-world review! Thanks Terry!

Re sticking dials. I have not noticed any issue on my mk2, but have never tried on a mk1 to know what the issue is like.

From a quick Google, people are saying the mk2 does not seem to have this issue.

One person even likened the mk2 dials to being like the E-M1X

Good morning

I've been sent here from elsewhere on the forum where they have advised me this could be the camera for me.

Am I able to ask questions here or start a new thread?

Many thanks
Dave

If it's to do with Olympus/OM Systems your're certainly in the right place, and welcome. It would help if you narrow it down to which camera(s) you are considering, and what your interest are. Be warned - ask 5 people and you'll get 6 answers! :p

Are OM Systems bad for order email communication ?

I ordered 2 lenses from them last week, only had the order confirmation email for them.

Next I got an email from UPS, that box turned up today, with only 1 of the lenses in it and paper work to match.

I am getting a bit peed off with OM, sent 2 customer service requests via their web site. First one is over the 5 days they quoted for a response.

No phone number and not replying to FB messenger, which they have done before.

Wish I had gone down the Cotswold route, I only went with OM this time as their prices were the same as Cotswold. But won’t bother in future

So after a writing a harsh message to them on FB messenger, I suddenly get a reply from them.
Finally telling we they are waiting for stock of one of the lenses I ordered.
I have a choice now to wait, realistically 3 weeks or get a refund and go with Cotswolds

Should I be getting worried?
OM-1, if I take a shot with the lens cap on, obviously totally black image! If I look through the eyepiece I see numerous hot pixels, spotted some 6 months ago, but today noticed an increase of said hot pixels.
None of these are visible on the computer/camera image unless I zoom in beyond image quality anyway.
Just getting a bit worried they are multiplying……. anyone else noticed similar?

Thank you. On my original post I stated that I have a 500£ budget, perhaps a small amount more. My interests are moon photography, macro

Thank you. On my original post I stated that I have a 500£ budget, perhaps a small amount more. My interests are moon photography, macro and our grandkids and I've always used a bridge camera (currently Nikon P900) but the images have never been brilliant.
I understand it would be pre owned i would be buying

I had a OM-D E-M1 Mark II and 60mm macro lens.
I sold it because it was very small and quite awkward to use.
Looking through the images I took with it, I'd like to get another OM camera and was thinking of the OM-1, possibly MkII and 90mm macro.

Is the OM-1 a different beast or much of the same layout, menus usability etc as the E-M1 MkII? Would it be a notable improvement over the E-M1 MkII?
Also I know the 60mm macro was very affordable and gave good results, is the 90mm macro a major step up as well?

I'll only be using the system for macro work.

Currently saving for an OM1 MK2 and 90mm macro.

Not got them yet but watched a load of YouTube videos about them.

OM1 menu system has been completely redesigned.
It would be an improvement over the EM1 MK2 (which I had before I upgraded to the EM1X).
I have the 60mm macro and, although superb, the 90mm is another step up. (2X macro, longer working distance, manual focus clutch).

I have owned the Em1 mk 2 and 3.

I think the om1 mk2 menu is the easiest I have used on any recent camera I have owned.

.... If you'll only be using the OM system for macro work, then their 90mm Macro is absolutely a no-brainer!

I had the Olympus 60mm Macro but found it very tricky to operate and I really really tried.

When I shot with Canon I had the very highly acclaimed Canon EF 100mm F/2.8L IS and the OM 90mm (180mm equivalent) Macro matches that standard in my opinion.

I have the OM-1 'Mk1' with sticky Control Dials  and E-M1X but prefer my E-M1X.

I thought this also about the 60mm,that spring loaded rotating dial needs updated to something else.
.... Exactly that. Although to be fair the Olympus 60mm Macro was designed and introduced more than 10 years ago.

BTW, I love your Instagram page! Beautiful lighting and processing and great choice of models ~ Very tasty indeed! [said with my 'retired-but-hardwired' professional art director's hat on].

It still produces great images even with it's age and awkward design.
Thanks very much, my Instagram has been neglected for quite some time and I really should update it. I'm just not as active in portrait photography as before.

.... Absolutely ~ The 60mm Macro delivers great results but just not in my hands! Too many shots missed by me with it.

Yep, I have 5 Instagram pages, one for each subject, and I am very slooow at keeping them up to date. Same with my Flickr page. I am just too busy shooting and processing and delivering photos to the women's football team and to the Horse Trials team I belong to. But I'm not complaining!
