I wouldn't disagree that with Nikon FF files you can pull out a lot more detail from the shadows. But a lot of it is how you expose in the first place. The actual image quality is getting up there with the competition - but once again it depends on your final output. DoF control - again, it's down to how you shoot. Really it's about perspective, and sometimes this perceived lack of sufficient DoF can be utilised well, particularly in landscape photos. On the plus side, the cost of lenses is a lot less than FF. And certainly with the advent of the OM-3, OM Systems seem to be making a conscious effort to make their cameras appear more all-rounders than purely wildlife.

Just purchased the 5 year warranty for my 90 mm Macro as that lens isn't going anywhere. It does look like you can only use the code once though (I have emailed OM).

OM1 with the 12-40 and 40 - 150 F2.8 pro lenses looks good at £2,099

I have no idea if the 100-400 is any good as it isn't a focal range I shoot at...I don't shoot wildlife and such - sorry

Ah, I missed that.

I just want a couple of their 5 year warranty deals, so will get another one at the next sale they do. I have it on the 90 mm now which is my favourite and then I will get one for the 40-150 F2.8.

It'll be the mk1.

They've just released the mk2 so trying to get rid of old stock.

Good lens but the mk2 has sync IS, the mk1 only has IS in the lens.

Morning all.

I see there is a digital Teleconverter in the OM1 (probably in other camera bodies also). Now, I've read online that using this doesn't reduce the image quality as the camera upscales it but then other posts I've seen say the opposite?

Any idea how this works?
 
Could be useful for holidays and things like that. I’m off to Marrakesh again in August and was thinking of just taking the 12-40 and 8-25 (so I have a faster option with me) and for just holiday snaps that could be great as if I’m reading this correctly the 8-25 would in essence cover up to 100 mm at F4 and the 12-40 would cover 160 mm at F2.8.
 
I used the built in 2x teleconverter whilst videoing Oystercatchers last year.

You can tell a slight difference in quality but certainly on video it worked well.

Not used it for images.
 
used it a few times for distant rarities only trouble is it produces a .jpg which in all honesty you can't do much with and using it with a 300 f4 +1.4 tc your then getting a combined FF focal length of 1680mm which needs to be held really steady as even the slightest movement overrides the i.s/i.b.i.s
for shorter length lenses however I can see a probable advantage .I have mine set on one of the spare front buttons

well the OM3 does seem like a good camera -- and quite a handsome one as well. The EVF seems to be the weakest point. Still, I'm vaguely curious why you didn't consider a return to Fuji? Was it a matter of absolutely minimising weight? The OM3 seems faster than Fuji but you're not generally one to shoot things which move!

Now there's a question! No, it was nothing to do with speed. A couple of reasons really. When I moved from Fuji to Nikon I had felt that Fuji kit (lens plus body) had moved up to a size and weight rapidly approaching FF cameras, and the IBIS was no great shakes. These reasons, while I'm not sure if they still apply as much, made me dismiss Fuji. Certainly their lenses, whilst being top quality (as most are these days in all honesty) are quite large. And strictly speaking it's not just weight that's the issue. It's the bulk as well. Bulk equals larger bags which to me makes them more cumbersome. Certainly if I pair the OM-3 with a small prime, it's (large) pocketable, which appeals. Plus the IBIS is class-leading. Incidentally, I dismissed Sony principally because I couldn't get on with the ergonomics. Suits some people, not me. Oh, and whilst I certainly miss the EVF on the Nikon, the OM is more than adequate. There are always compromises.
Incidentally, and irrelevant but interesting, I've just printed a 300mm x 700mm panorama from an old Oly E520 file (Gosford House!), and I doubt you would criticise the image quality. So it's not always pixels.
 
to be honest, most of the things I've actually printed are from earlier (usually not FF) cameras and most of these prints are fine! Still, there were times when I felt frustrated such as the trip to Iceland when the Fuji didn't always have the dynamic range or the rendering seemed rather strange. But i guess to be truthful nowadays most cameras and the better lenses are actually good enough for most things. And there are some pretty stunning photos on this thread!
 
Hi folks, hope all is well.

Just wondered what setting people are using to catch their dogs running, either towards the camera or across the frame.

I currently have it set to AFC, animal detection, eye detection with tracking, using the 20FPS silent sequential (haven't tried the 50/120 FPS modes). I've set the sensitivity to +2

Just wondered if people were doing similar or, if there were any suggestions to further try / improve my settings?

I'm over the moon with how it is working but always worth trying new things to see if it can be even better.

It was/is my understanding that when using subject detection that C-AF & tracking was not the ideal i.e. as "subject detection" is in effect a tracking function, you don't/shouldn't need 'Tracking' turned on with C-AF.

This. And I always shoot at 50 FPS. I want to catch the optimal moment. Yep. It’s worth trawling through…for me..

As with box brownie , do NOT use tracking combined with any subject I.d . C.a.f plus I.d only , and your sequential settings are spot on . For ease of use rather than using the joystick I have focus point change assignment on one of the buttons on the camera shoulder so a quick press and spin the front wheel brings up any chosen photo point grid .

IIRC the Subject AI implementation on that body was far from the greatest! :(

So maybe not as well would be the answer.......having said that Tracking perhaps has not been Olympus/OM best 'suit'???

Hmmm I tend to disagree the em1x bird I.d did it differently allowing for up to six birds at a time tracking .. depends what you want to achieve really. Saying that now sold my second e.m1x and dabbling with Nikon dslr again as a backup . Bit like driving a car down different roads to get to the same place

Not had an issue with my EM1X (was Jeff's).

So glad I left the custom modes that Jeff had dialled in.
