After a travel day on Tuesday we've spent the last couple of days birding around Calgary and the grasslands to the east.

Super shots indeed ,love the owl

Assuming you have the FN Lever set to AF, what do you have assigned to position 1 and 2.
I'm looking at Birds and Birds in Flight.
Do you have it all set the same across your custom modes or different for each.

You have 4 options available my choices are c1 static birds C2 b.i.f .. C3 macro not sure you need any more but perhaps C4 for video

I get that bit
for my b.i.f I have FN lever 1 set to C-AF+TR with bird detect, All Points and on lever position 2 I have C-AF with 25 points
I use BBF so that is my S-AF

For my Static birds I only have C-AF+TR+MF with 1 point, and spot metering which should be tied to the AF point

According to OMS themselves you should NOT use TRK with bird I.d as they act against one another . It’s one or the other your choice

I have a EM1x, how do you use Bird Detect without TRK?
I have seen a Video by Espen Hellend where he mentions it, but not how to, I have done many google searches to no Avail

I tried switching the CAF + Tracking off and just using the animal ID the other day and my hit rate was a lot lower than having the animal and CAF + tracking on.

I’ve been reading various sites about this also over the last week and have seen others saying the same.

I believe the OM1.2 automatically switches off the Animal tracking when CAF + tracking is on but I’ve read and watched a video saying you can have both switched on for the om1.1

I'm going to keep testing it over the next week but currently there is a significant difference in the number of in focus images of my dog running at the camera.

Ah the info was for a om1 as far as I’m aware the e.mix / om1 / om1mkii are all different in there approach to using bird I.d and trk

Here is one video I watched

We moved west into the Rockies, birding is a bit slower here due to altitude and temperature (most of the lakes are at least partially frozen still). As promised, some landscapes; most have been taken on the OM-1 in HHHR:

Moved through or moved there to live? Just wondering if I have a fellow Canadian on the thread...

So I got a new flash recently a Godox V350 and I decided to test it on stacking images but the weather is not good (the rain is needed0 so I went for a spanner this is handheld with my OM1 and 90mm f3.5 V350 and Cygnustech diffuser

This is 30 shots handheld using focus bracketing stacked in photoshop

Just thought I'd throw this one in. Taken in 2001 (yes, 2001) on an Olympus C2020Z - a 2 megapixel camera. Prints up well on A4.

PS uncropped but with a teleconverter on the end. Not sure what equivalent focal length that makes it.

Finally took the plunge and got a 100-400 mk2 from HDEW during their sale.

Extra £50 off with a voucher too so it cost £999 all in.

Superb service as always from HDEW.

Now to get to grips with it.

Anyone used these guys?

That's a good price for a good lens.

But will you need a 1.2 aperture?
I don't have any primes. I have the 8-25 F4 Pro. 12-40 F2.8 Pro V2 and the 40-150 F2.8 Pro.

I was going to add the 20 mm F1.4 but it seems to have mixed reviews. Then thought about the sigma 16 mm F1.4 but you can get the 17 mm F1.2 for not much more (grey)

That doesn't answer the question.

Will you need that f1.2 aperture for low light?

If not get the f1.8.

If you're buying it for the bokeh then save your money, it won't give you much on M4/3.

Not sure I need it but could be useful to have something in the bag. I'm off to Marrakech I'm August so thought it might come in handy in the Medina

I'm not too worried about the bokeh as I'm currently tossing up canon Vs Sony for my return to FF

If you're thinking about low-light, remember you can go high on ISO without losing much. Nobody will criticise you for a so-called "noisy" photo but they may if you miss focus because of razor-tight depth of field.

I'll just use HHHR mode if needed as that helps a lot with noise

The 17mm f/1.8 is considerably smaller and lighter for travel (and cheaper!). It easily slips into a pocket. Also the 45mm f/1.8 though mine isn't as sharp as my 17mm f/1.8. I know others have differing opinions on which is sharper.

I have the 17mm f/1.2 as well which I mainly bought for gig photography but this was just before covid, and I've slipped out of doing that these days so it hasn't seen much use. It's really quite big and heavy for a M43 lens.

Here are a couple of old shots taken with the 17mm f/1.8 - taken on my Em5ii and Pen F - so old cameras and sensors - and downsized of course, but I am happy with how sharp it is. .
