Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Ive seen today srs microsystems have put back shipment date on the 90mm to 8th march now. It was 28th feb.
On dp review there’s people who got theirs on friday so i assuming maybe the american market got the first release ?
Not the best release from om systems tbh . Giving no news of release dates in all of the media they have pumped out (and there has been a lot) is a bit silly.

As a macro photographer most of the reviews I have seen have meant little to me. They have been done people who do not shoot like me but here is one from someone I trust. This is a non Olympus user but is macro photographer.

Ive seen this guys take on the new macro 90mm lens too Alf...an like you, i do tend to shoot close up/macro a lot!
Ive read a few things about this lens, an it could just be the only lens i would ever use/need. But the price tag (for me) means, i will wait for a decent 2ndhand one, sometime in the future...besides, ive only just bought into the Oly 60mm macro, an im still getting to grips with that quirky little lens!

note - 1st post for me in this thread, since im from the darkside (Panny G9 owner)...but i can see myself maybe getting more Oly lenses.
Cheers Paul.

Can anyone help me with my Starry Sky AF settings, please?

Last night I missed the first blast of the Northern Lights as we had people round. About 11 pm I checked the app again and it was at red, so I read up on "Starry Sky" AF in the OM1 manual. It looked simple enough so I went ahead and had a look at the sky. There was little to see by eye so I took a few snaps with the camera on the tripod with Starry Sky AF engaged (I thought).

On examining the files this morning there was a faint hint of colour visible in the sky but none of them were sharp. Maybe I hadn't set Starry Sky up correctly or maybe it was a problem with lens IS, which I left on. There's no sign of camera shake, just all the stars just look mushy. Just in case there's another show tonight, can anyone advise? Thanks.

I prefer my Laowa 50mm f2.8 C Dreamer 2:1 to the 60mm but I have pre ordered a 90mm f3.5

Do you have a 40-150mm f2.8 plus mc-14?
This was taken with that combo

Only tried starry sky once, maybe shutter time was a bit long?
Calculator and bit of info here:

Where did you preorder your 90mm from? It will be interesting to compare how two different camera shops do with fulfilling preorders. I went with wex.

Long shot I know, but has anyone on here recently ordered the mighty Olympus 150-400 big white, and if so where from and how long did it take from order to delivery please ?

I've been quoted anywhere from 3 months to 12 months from various dealers ?

Thanks for the reply. It was cloudy last night so a no-show from the aurora but shutter speed was 8secs @f4 / 4000 ISO.. As I said there was no sign of camera shake, just everything was a bit blurry, even the wind turbines on the hill opposite.

This does seem to be an ongoing dilemma for me - IS on or off when using a tripod..........?

Yes, not as easy as 123 for some reason, it’s as easy as 725 :D
well update on this thanks to Dave(emmet's ) post I delved into to e/bay the other night and bought a vivitar series 1 70-210 MF zoom lens in nikon mount as I had one spare ... its just arrived and having set it up to my E-M1X name /focal length /apeture etc I took a few test shots through the back window ..
will now have a further play outdoors with it but at this moment in time it appears to be razor sharp very pleased indeed for a £24 purchase will do my normal testing procedure but I can see why they use to rave over these lenses back in the day

I used to use Vivitar zooms (possibly that very model) successfully on my Nikon FM back in the late 70s/early 80s shooting rally cars. Must have been OK as I made a tidy amount of pocket money from selling the prints (Cibachrome printed by myself) to the competitors. No AF or AE, nor IS, in those days!

Just back after a week on The Algarve.
I believe this is a Reed Warbler (it is on a reed:D!) rather than a Willow Warbler? WRONG - CHIFFCHAFF!
I do think the 40-150mm f2.8 is a fab lens.
This was taken on the Penina Championship Golf Course.

Not much comment on here about the OM5. I’m about to get one because, though I love the features of the E-M1, I prefer the handling of the E-M5. I care not about focus speed nor twin card slots.

Looks like I am having the same experience as Red Robin with WEX unfortunately. I certainly will be stopping using them after this and I have used them for 20 years.

The 90mm is shipping in the UK now with it arriving to people today.
I went on WEX livechat to ask have they had stock are they fulfilling any preorders and this is the very poor response I got.

"We are unable to provide details of where customers are on waiting lists, how many pre-orders we have, amount of stock we have on order with suppliers or quantities of stock we have received as this information is commercially sensitive.

The product is on order and we will of course fulfil orders in a first come first served basis. You will receive an email notification when stock arrives and allocated to you order."

Whereas if you go on somewhere like Clifton Cameras website they good info with a note saying all their UK stock has sold out, next delivery ETA is April.
Coming from pre-ordering things like graphics cards where you were given a preorder queue number and they would update their estimated shipment sizes, being told absolutely nothing is a big shock.
Even being told where you are on the preorder queue would do.

Yes Alf, i saw your Ant pic on Flickr. It works well with that combo of 40-150 2.8/MC 1.4.
Thats not a lens i have right now, but i have recently read a few reviews about it. Problem is - i shoot a lot of my images one handed! so the weight in one hand plus obtaining a nice sharp image, is something i have to consider. For the last few years, ive pretty much always used Canon 500D close up lenses (attached to zoom lenses) but this meant using apertures up to f/16 (for MFT). With a dedicated MFT macro lens (such as the Oly 60mm) i might just be able to get away with just using the naked lens, rather than attaching my usual 500/250D Doublet/Achromat close up lens. Which in turn, means i might still be able to shoot my prefered opened winged Butterfly images (with a nice creamy/unclutered background) getting everything in focus, without resorting to f/11 to f/16 apertures.
Its early days yet (as ive only just bought the Oly 60mm Macro) so i need to spend time out in the field testing it...But, it will be a few months yet, before we get plenty of Butterflies on the wing! Ive tested the lens on some early Reptile images this year, and it works quite well, so im guessing it will also be great with butterflies.
Ive never even looked at the option of using Laowa lenses, because Auto focus (for me) is priority right now...as for the new 90mm macro, well yes, i could probably put that to very good use...as i said before, the 90mm macro, could be the only lens that i would want to use for everything that i point a camera at!!
Cheers Paul.

Great deals on E-M1X kits. £1499 inc either the 25 or 45 f1.2 Pro lens.

New Olympus cash back offers now on. I’ve ordered the 100-400 £85 cash back.

I was tempted by the E-M1X bundle…

Bit of a long shot, planning my GAS (or not) for a forthcoming Scotland trip. My main lens is the 12-45/4, but I am wondering if it will be wide enough for this trip.

I will be in town for a few days and then out and about in Skye and Fort William / Glen Coe for the rest.

Does anyone have any landscape examples, taken at 8 & 12 mm ? I would love the 8-25mm, but it is not the cheapest option

How about looking at one of the Laowa primes? I have both the 7.5mm and the 10mm. Manual focus but with auto aperture. Dead easy to focus and relatively inexpensive.

The Panasonic 8-18 mm is a good option. Also consider stitching shots taken at 12mm vertically.

Do you often shoot at 12mm wishing you had a wider lens?
Shooting at 8mm requires careful composition to avoid mountains looking like molehills.

Last summer I shot Niagra Falls and the Grand Canyon with my 12-40mm f2.8. When the scene was wider than 12mm, I just took handheld shots and stitched in my ancient Lightroom 6.1.
I'm afraid I didn't make much of matching exposure across the frames and used the camera level to line up. This was a holiday not a photo adventure.
A couple won't match due to a lack of defining features in the central image - Niagra has a big, white plume that loses anything for the software to lock on to. for instance.

Unless you think you'll get a lot of use then I would save the money and the weight - but then we all like a new toy too ;)

Don't forget the Panasonic 9mm/1.7 AF and rectilinear at a not silly price
Used mine loads and not touched my 8-18 since I got it.

I will get out a bit more once it’s a bit warmer and decide if 12 is wide enough. I have plenty of time before the trip
