Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

.... It's very important not to disturb seal pups (or adult seals) in wild coastal regions - I can't emphasise that enough.

Consequently you need as much focal length reach and distance as possible. More than 400mm! (equivalent to your 200mm).
Don't worry, we're going to horsey. The beach remains closed during pupping season to protect them but there is excellent visibility from the dunes and it happens to be a reasonable viewing distance. They are extremely protective of the seals, and rightfully so! I appreciate the advice though - perhaps I'll consider the 100-400mm, but wex don't offer hire of the olympus range.

However...

@ThePrettyDamned

Though I have not used them for some time I would recommend

https://lensesforhire.co.uk/search who have some Olympus lenses to choose from ;)

This may be my answer. Many thanks!

I'm not expecting loads of seals, as we're heading into February - I imagine even over the last week many have been moving on (a few may even be coming down the river toward where I live!). But I wanted to try my hand at taking some shots of them. I imagine the surrounding area has its own unique, bleak beauty so I'll be taking the 20mm, 45mm and 40-150 plastic fantastic as well, in case there are landscapes. Thanks all!

Went for an olympus 300mm f4 from lensesforhire.co.uk.

I mean, if I'm going to try wildlife, I may as well TRY wildlife...!
.... The Olympus 300mm F/4 PRO is a stellar lens! Enjoy! We look forward to seeing your results.

Well guys Im hanging up my Olympus hat and going over to the bridge camera world, I am doing less photography these days and have decided to get rid of the Om System/Olympus gear and I feel the all in one 1" sensor cameras will be enough for what I do. It been a blast with Olympus. ;)

Good luck with it. There’s a lot of truth in what you say - it’s not all about sensor size and megapixels. (y)

Which one alby my guess would be Sony RX10iv

Just spent lunch testing the 300mm f4 from lensesforhire.co.uk.

Holy. Freaking. Moly.

What an outstanding lens that I definitely don't need. Will post boring swan and duck photos later (I didn't see the marsh harrier sadly). But I think I'll have a wonderful time in Horsey tomorrow!

A most thrilling image, I know. If it moves you to tears, I can only apologise. But I'm very impressed! Focus is instant, it's hand-holdable, IS is amazing and image quality is excellent. This is natural profile out of camera jpeg, just resized to upload and upped blue saturation.

Hope to share some full res shots, but I've never done wildlife stuff before and while seals are not exactly the hardest thing to shoot I dare say I'll fail wonderfully.

But yes, it's a good lens. Build seems nice, similar enough to other high end lenses like Canon and Nikon pro lenses. Shame I can't afford it, but if I enjoy the process I may grab a 7D and 400mm 5.6 for a similar, cheaper experience without IS.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, but given that there is an announcement coming soon and there is cashback on the OM1 and OM5, do we think a new camera is being announced on 8th Feb?
Perhaps a PenF? Another larger bodied flagship camera?

Should just be the 90mm macro ,but you never know

There's also a free MC20 with the three lenses that can use it so what does that mean might be coming?
As Jeff says, only the 90mm Macro is expected.

Hope that worked! Had a great day. 300mm f4 is a great lens, and we saw a surprise group of deer! Apologies if I've done photos wrong, I couldn't seem to embed...

Colours exported pretty heavy on these ones as I've prepared them for printing and to go in a very plain room that needs some injections of colour. They do look a bit less mad in colour managed browsers, though! Sadly, the olympus 45mm 1.8 has HORRIFIC fringing, which I can't remove easily in lightroom. It's the one flaw of an otherwise brilliant lens, and not particularly surprising - fast medium telephotos do tend to do this unless you pay crazy money!

Well done. The last seal photo is excellent. Have you got any more trips planned with the 300mm lens?
You are too kind.

I do - today, I'll be going to a local stretch of river. My aim is a shot of either a little egret or (my favourite) a grey heron, but they're very easily spooked despite being next to a road.

There is another large bird of prey in the area, but I have not identified it yet (I'm not particularly knowledgeable).

Lens goes back tomorrow - and I will miss it. I may save for the 100-400mm, which would be excellent for me and half the price, but it's still a lot of money and I STILL think I'd probably get a nikon D500 and the excellent Nikkor 200-500mm 5.6 lens, which would perform similarly for less money and give me a dedicated kit for wildlife. I'm not sure I'm in the market, though, so I'll probably be hiring the 300mm f4 a couple more times this year to be honest, as it's outstanding!

The 100-400 is my go to workhorse , bit more flexible than the bare 300 but horses for causes

Yes, I don't think I'd want to own the 300mm f4, it is such a one-trick pony. I like detail shots of landscapes, and used to use a 135mm lens on my aps cameras to do that, so the 100-400mm is an altogether more practical lens for me.

I may need to head to wex when I've got some cash, and see if I can compare that to something like a used nikon D7200 coupled with a big zoom, see what I prefer. I did definitely feel the mirrorless approach wasn't so... "direct"? As a traditional slr, I really could notice the lag after a few frames on a moving subject, which made tracking slightly more difficult - although I'm not an expert, and newer models probably address this somewhat.

The 100-400 is looking MIGHTY tempting though, I really had fun with this lens.

depends on what body your using and also how you have it set up , the big three i.e 1-mkiii , e-M1X, and om1 are all ultra fast on focus, burst rate ,f.p.s IF ??? set up correctly ,having been through the dslr with long lens scenario there is no way I would consider going back . the 100-400 lens is not a pro lens but is more than up to the job browse through some of my shots on flickr . 11 million viewers cant be wrong LOL .. the lens also takes the 1.4 t.c giving a ff equivalent of just under 1200mm f.l

Has anyone used OM Workspace for focus stacking at all? I manually focused on some images and I am having trouble stacking them. I've used Affinity Photo 2 but I wanted to see what the proprietary software would give me by comparison. I can't get it to work at all.

As I didn't use the in camera bracketing or stacking option, that may be the issue, but I wondered if anyone had successfully used the software for this?

First I was using a borrowed 25mm f/1.2 and then my 8-25mm f/4 on the OM1.

I tried copying the images into a separate folder and not copying the .xmp files across in case that was an issue - no difference.

I get these messages..
