Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

The blackouts on the EVF always annoy me - I was drag racing earlier in the year and watched a crash, i caught 3 shots before I had no idea where the car was and it had hit the barrier. Apart from that, for cars I see no difference from the e-m1 to my old d7000 in terms of hit-rate as cars are big and fairly predictable in their movements ( generally )

Maybe its my technique - i need more practice when my kids are on the bmx track as there are jumps, skids, dust and other distractions. My e-m1 + 40-150 f2.8 + TC weighs under 1.4kg whereas a d500 + 70-200 would be 2.4kg so that's a factor too. In fact just the d500 + 70-200 weighs more than my camera and 4 lenses..

grrr

Damian, Would of thought the E-M1 mkii will have better auto focus tracking which means you could keep your current pro lenses and just swap the body next year?

Although i do miss the shallow dof, and have considered the Sony A7 with the 55mm f1.8. My second daughter was born 2 weeks ago and miss the shallow dof of a bigger sensor for portraits.

Yes, I miss the dof from the Nikon but have a satisfactory compromise with the sigma 30mm f1.4 which is close enough to the Nikon 35mm f1.8 for me

Will look at few reviews, are you happy with the sigma? Sounds a good option.

Yes, mine is sharp at 1.4 - it's a similar size to the 12-40 but lighter. I know this will put some off but it's a trade off

i have a 70-200 F2.8 here i could weigh them for you.... my most used Lens is the 600mm sigma, very rarely do i switch it off, I've taken the 70-200 with me a few times so in APS-C its 105-300 and i rarely switch to it and find having that extra 300 helps. Don't get me wrong the 2.8 is nice to have but I'm kinda nearly on ISO 100 most of the time when its bright.

I would love though the Nikon 80-400 i think that would be a sweet spot for me....as most i shoot seem to be 280 to 410mm.. never really do 600mm (900MM APS-C ) only when I'm trying to shoot birds..
what i have noticed its very hard to nail them at 1/60th I'm pretty sure i had more on the EM5II at that, i kinda creep up to 1/160th for blur and hover round 1/600th or higher depending if I'm trying to grab a wheelie..

Just looked at the 75mm f1.8....l wonder if i could use a 150mm focal length lens, it does look nice though!

thanks Rob - I think that going back to Nikon would be a no-no. After all I sold up because I kept leaving kit at home due to the weight of it so i can't really see that that would change..I might just have to put up with being even more average than I'd hoped :coat: I don't print anything so what does it matter as its only a hobby :snaphappy:

Jon - the 75mm is lovely but I've never used one as its too specialised for me

I'm pretty sure the Em1II will tick your boxes, I'm gonna get 1 i think
Im sure Olympus will up there game.

i hope so..just have to resist the temptation to jump in as I suspect it will be £1400+

i am looking forward to seeing what the mk11 brings, what sort of time scale is the realise being guessed at now- ive lost track a bit

thank you mate, that's a b****r-i was hoping i would get to lust after it sooner,
the sooner it arrives, the sooner i can start persuading myself i really, really need the upgrade:p

Well ive sold my E-M10 this morning so looks like my 45mm f1.8 and 12-40 pro is up for grabs! Not sure what i want but i think it has to be full frame.

Jon if you want the feeling of an Olympus with Live view etc you have to go Sony, if you wanna stare at the rear screen after every shot then DSLR :), i found it very hard to learn the D500 from my Sony, and everytime i go back to the sony for lanscpaes etc its a pleasure to use, the DSLRs are good though but RAW skill :)

WHat you fancying ?

Yes and i love to change camera systems if im honest with myself! The good thing thing is i buy secondhand so never lose much money in the case of the em10 i actually made money after a year of ownership! Will keep an eye in here as i probably will have another m43 at some point in the future.

Either a Sony a7, Nikon d600 or a Canon 5dmk11...looking at spending £700-800 for the body and a fast prime.

if you can try stretch to the A7II and get that 5 Axis, i use the cheap 28mm F2 which does ok, you can fit lens to it and step it down even more 21mm etc.... Failing that you could get the new cheap 50mm F1.8 seems to be ok. Good thing about if you get the A7ii and 5 axis is you can buy a whole raft of lens adaptors and use aged old Minolta etc and still have a steady arm....

A7ii is too much money for me im afraid! Looking at 600-700 for the body.

panamoz and kotcha in Ireland both have them for 1089 ish... they will be Grey though, but my Olympus was i got it from Panamoz

2nd hand maybe a bit cheaper, Fair play though if you've got a budget, id just wait a month and save up....and get the 5 Axis and better focusing. Dad has the II and its great.

Hi all sold most my Nikon gear just one lens left to go and entering the MFT world as i want a smaller system , purchased a mint em1 which is superb, looking to get a cheaper second body as a backup and so I don't have to change lenses too often and was wondering if the E-M10/5 are still good options or would a G7 be better?

I did it the other way round, sold all my canon gear and bought the Olympus E-M5ii with lenses. Just like you I wanted a second body for the same reasons and a good cheap E-M1 came up on here.
Oddly I now use the E-M1 more often because of it's macro capabilities and better size/weight ratio with longer lenses.
I do use the E-m5ii for it's portability, video and hi-res capabilities.
Personally if funds permit I'd go for the E-M5ii but that's just my opinion, I've never looked hard at the G range.

for a comparison between the 5 and 10.

Agreed, at least stick with olympus otherwise you end up trying to keep track of 2 menu systems etc.

That wouldn't be a problem as I'm used to the Panasonic menu anyway.

Id stick to Olympus just to be able to keep to the same batteries / chargers / menus.

ive got the mk1 omd-e-m10 apart from g.a.s it does everything i need, it works very well. if you do get one the add on grip helps with comfort

Don't want spend too much on a second body so I think the 10 or 5 will be the way to go

But remember the EM10 and EM10ii use different batteries to the EM1. The EM5 and EM5ii use the same as the EM1.

Both of the older OMDs are still great cameras.

I didn’t know that. I was half considering changing one of my em5's for a mk2 em10, but i like only having one set of batteries and one charger. Have to wait for the em5 mk2 to drop some more, or sell both my em5's. What are used mk1 em5's and grips going for these days?
