Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I laughed at Angry birds. "Birds aren't round like that!" Now I know how wrong I was, and right they were.

I have just got the E-M10 and 14-42 EZ lens. I also managed to get the 45mm f1.8 for £119.99 from John Lewis.
Having being used to Canon DSLR's, I found mounting the kit lens to be quite stiff to mount. When it came to the 45mm, I was in fear of breaking the lens trying to mount and dis-mount the lens, it is that stiff to turn. Is this normal?

My 45mm f1.8 is very stiff to fit so i imagine most if not all are the same when new/newish.

Jealous Joncro, just paid £149 from Wex [emoji45]

The John Lewis 45mm bargain has been up on the common "deal sites" for a while, got to check the bargains! ;)

i'm thinking about getting rid of some of my primes in favour of a f2.8. At the moment I have the P20, o25, o45 and o60 macro. I think that I'd want to keep the p20 but am I mad to get rid of the primes ? I rarely use the macro lens and shoot in low light ( darkness ) maybe once a month...

I know that the 12-35 or 12-40 are much bigger ( 305g and 382g respectively ) but my kit bag would way roughly the same as the above 3 primes weigh 438g. It would also mean that I have more flexibility with a zoom..

am I mad ?

No, not mad at all. There just happen to be two for sale in the classifieds at the moment, too... ;)

Yeah, but those are grey, whereas ours are black ;)

I did think about getting the 12-35 2.8 but i personally would miss the f1.8 of the primes, my biggest concern when switching over MFT's was deep of field, the O25mm gives me just enough control of DOF. I suppose its what is suitable for you style photography.

I don't really do portrait stuff very often so whilst I like to subject separation, I don't think it's the be all and end all

am I mad ?
The 12-40 is really sharp and a great lens and sits on my camera most of the time. It is really heavy in comparison to the primes too. However with the O45, P20 and O75, the image "pops" alot more. I actually prefer the prime images, they are much lighter lenses. But I have overly energetic kids so I don't have time to faff changing lenses or running backwards and forwards to get the shot I want.

Are you mad? Probably unless you don't need the ease of a zoom? Just my opinion though...

when I used Nikon, I had the Tamron 17-50 which was glued to my d7000 unless I was shooting in really low light when I'd use the 35 mm f1.8. Now, I have 3 lenses to cover 20-45 mm and then nothing from 8-20 hence my thinking of the 12-40 ( or 12-35 ).

Yesterday I was going to keep the p20 but now I think that it will have to go and I'll keep the 025 instead for low light stuff.

The 060 has been sold so my fund is halfway ( unless someone offers me a 12-40 at £400  )

Nice try, but no :p (unless you're throwing in the P20 with that? I can but ask...)

And how did you lose the rear cap already? I TOLD you to look after her! :bat:

Haha - just found it attached to my 45mm. D'ope. Did myself out of a sale earlier :(

Have you considered a 9-18? Current £399 on Amazon, but I think there's £120 cashback available too.

not long enough that one. How did you get on with the 12-40 ?

I meant to complement your primes (*) as you mentioned having nothing from 8-20mm. I had one, but tended to not use it as a walkaround (preferring the 20/25 primes or the 14-150 superzoom), so only got it out the bag for wide shots, which wasn't often enough to justify keeping it.

The 12-40 is a great lens. I like how wide it is (better than the 18-xx I was used to on Nikon) and it feels solid - I reckon if you dropped it on your foot, your foot will lose (**). It's big, but not excessively so - on my EM5 it definitely benefits from having the grip on, but you could use it without, unless you're a weak-wristed southern pansy like me.

The thing that put me off is that the EM5 plus 12-40 is, bulk-wise, getting back into DSLR territory, which is what I was trying to get away from with MFT. Hence I've got the LX100 to replace it for everyday shots. No, it's not as good as the 12-40, but good enough for me, although I miss manual zoom. I wish someone would make fast lenses without the 'pro' build/spec - I don't drop kick my gear over fences (see foot comment above) in the rain, so am happy with cheapo plastic lenses!
I should really sell the EM5 too, but for the time being I'm keeping that as I recklessly got a 100-300 as I've not tried any really long lenses on MFT yet. But eventually I'll realize an EM5 and 100-300 for the 1 day a year trip to the zoo is absurd, and will sell them at a huge loss, since the EM5 will be a dinosaur and the 100-300 will be on v2/v3 and mine will look like something found in the arms of a peatbog man.

(*) I say, sir, what lovely primes you have.
(**) You may also lose your foot.

hmm, I could do but I was trying to cut down on the number of lenses I have. Atleast I think I am...shame the options are so limited size wise, big or bigger..

I also considered the lx100 when I sold the XF1 but the zoom ( ie no manual as you say and the lack of range compared to others ) and lack of flappy screen put me off

would you like to sell your 12-40 at a huge loss too ( even bigger loss I mean, obviously ) just to complete a hat-trick of financial disasters ? This could be the starting point of something truly terrible for you

So today the gx8 is announced with a 20.3mp Sony sensor - I had a look at the camerastore's YouTube of it and it looks great at higher ISO (3200/6400 ).

So maybe it will make the e-m1 mk2 ?

If the EM1 mk2 has that sensor that's all I'll need to make the upgrade - anything else will be a bonus (assuming nothing gets worse).

I have the standard Olympus 1.8 primes, 17mm, 25mm and 45mm.

Recently got the 12-40mm Pro lens.

To be honest, the Pro has stayed on my camera 95% of the time since getting it. I like the added DOF (or reduced!) you get with the 1.8 on the primes, but the difference isn't enough to outweigh the benefits of having the focal range at my fingertips with no lens changing. Most of my photography is opportunistic, walking around with friends, family etc, so not having to change lenses is ideal.

Though I have always been a prime lens user when I was Nikon, I'm really happy with the quality of the Pro lens.

Like others have said, it is a big lens, but not massively so, and I think suits the Em5 Mark 2 well. I did move to MFT for the smaller size, and the Pro kind of negates that benefit to an extent, but if I had got the full frame equivalent of the 12-40mm Pro, it would have been huge, and not to mention much more costly.

I think I will sell the 25mm and 45mm lenses, and keep the 17mm for when I do want to travel light.

Really tempted to buy the 40-150mm Pro lens next, anyone got one?!

thanks for that James, i'm going to get rid of my primes ( except the o25 ) and go for the 12-40 I think as, like you, my photography is opportunistic - its rare for me to go out and "set up" a shot

I don't think you will regret it, it really is a very nice lens. Hope to see some of your photos on the forum soon :)

I will probably end up buying back the primes in a couple of years I suspect! They are nice and cheap comparatively speaking which is another added benefit to MFT.

Cheers

I have the Oly 17, 25 and 45 and also Panny 14mm. Looking at what these lenses go for used (they seem to be cheap) I think they're worth hanging on to even if you don't use them much as they're so good.

I just need to temporarily fund my Pro lens purchase ;) Every little helps! Like I say, pretty sure I will be buying these back at some point.

I don't care so much about a 20MP Sensor but I hope we get a faster working high res function so that you can get handheld 40MP shots of normal scenes (doesn't need to be action) but just landscapes with moving twigs or portraits.

I have just had to send my oly 60mm macro back as it has a focusing problem. Thinking of exchanging for either oly 17mm or oly 75mm. I already have the oly 45mm. Leaning towards the 75mm , does anyone have a preference or some photos taken with either 17 or 75 mm.
