Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Guys what is the flash like with the OMD is it provided with one.

I was told today that the OMD beats quite a few dslr out there

Decent build quality, a little fiddly to take on and off - there are a couple of plastic covers to remove from the body and one from the flash.

Seems quite powerful - not sure I will use it much though as I prefer natural and lowlight stuff. Probably take the GX1 out to a restaurant or party and use the pop-up flash - less hassle

To be honest I dont like flash either i rather take pictures natural so I guess I am like you...

Can you do me a picture in low light and tell me what mode and iso it was using please as I am so tempted on the OMD.. I am torn between GX1 and OMD but I seem to like the OMD for the build and the EVF and tilt screen.

Alan did you do much editing on the leaf or is the vignette there natural or you put it here?

Ive had a GF1 2 years ago and i loved it with it 20mm Pancake lens. Is the GX1 better with a Pancake lens

Just added a little vignette in PP

The GX1 is a superb body and a great progression from the GF1. Personally, I love the 20mm and will stick it on the OM-D a lot I'm sure.

Has the slight incompatibility noise thing with the 20mm been fixed?

Is it true the omd can be pain in low light as it triggers the EVF?

Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if anyone is using the Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f0.95 with the E-M5?

I use one on a G1 and it's a cracking lens IMVHO. There is some CA that CS5 can't even touch and there's also some blooming around bright objects but nothing that'll stop you enjoying the lens. It's pretty good at f0.95 and stopped down a little it's very sharp and it'll focus very close and can be used as a sort of psudo macro lens for flower shots and the like.

This lens saved MFT for me.

A couple with the Oly 75mm f1.8:

Have owned 2x7D's, a 40D, a D3100, a D5100, a 5D2 and have used a D800 a fair bit at work - I prefer the micro four thirds kit to all of them - but that is ME not YOU.....the OM-D has been with me the shortest time yet I like it the most - much better than the G3 and looks to be better in a number of areas to the GX1.

You're going to have to make your mind up at some point:lol:

Body size, body weight, focus speed and iso over 800 on the 7d was noisy

That is true regarding ISO how far you get on OMD

I'm very pleased with the way the OM-D handles high iso.

These were taken at 4000

These should be click-able and the Exif should be intact.

Just wow very impressive. In raw or jpeg any processing

They are all jpegs
As I love the way Olympus jpegs look,
1,3 & 4 all unprocessed other than possibly a slight crop
2 was processed in aperture & Silver Efex Pro 2.

Thanks arad85
I'll have a read of that.

Folks is the kit lens that comes with the OM-D any good?

Not super-sharp and slow at the long end, but it's a very flexible walk-around lens.
It's got a handy Macro mode, power zoom for video, programmable function button on the lens, and a useful zoom range.
Thumbs-up from me.

As I am trying work out if it better me getting the body only and get the Free 45mm lens and what other lens should I add that will perform better that way I put £150 toward a different lens

The mZuiko 40-150 is a good lens that complements the 45mm, not expensive either.
Feels cheap, works well.

I'm just wondering what people think of the OM-D's real world ISO performance?

I've seen the lab shots and it appears to perform fairly well against some of the older cameras I used to own (the Canon 7D for example). I regularly shot at 3200 and 6400 with my x100.

Whilst my main use is web I have started to print recently, 16x20 being quite common.

A friendly frog at ISO5000 PP'd with NR defaults in Capture One Pro and a touch of Neat Image afterwards.
Auto ISO is your friend with the E-M5 :)

Cracking shot there. You use capture one, I saw the trey Ratcliff verity hour this week about m43 and a pro who shoots with OMD reckoned capture one was the best, need to give it a try.

Thanks, glad you like it :)
Capture One Pro has been my prefered RAW converter for many years. I've tried pretty much everything else but for me they don't match up. For extraction of detail from a RAW file it's unbeatable in my book and the GUI is very well thought out both in presentation and execution. Certainly worth giving it a try.

Oh, I forget to mention that it matches the body in being weather-proof too...

Any one got their free lens yet

No - although my claim status is showing as valid - I made the claim on the 16/10 which was the 2nd day of the promotion running - having purchased on the 15/10.

I hope that it shows up soon, although the T&Cs said 28 days......

Cheers

Did you say the omd better than 7d in low light I've found 7d poor at high ISO.

Example using the Olympus 12-50mm handheld in Macro mode (f/6, 1/100s, ISO 1250). This was a RAW file, loaded into Apple Aperture and I simply clicked "Auto Enhance" - no other changes made.

(I was not standing directly above the leaf, but at an angle, which is why it is blurred towards the left hand edge of the image).

I normally use Auto-ISO set to use ISO 3200 as a maximum, so struggled to find higher-ISO images for "rookies". How about this weird statue (not the greatest image, I know) again using the Olympus 12-50mm (at 12mm, f/5.6, 1/80, ISO 6400):

I like it, it's versatile and as a kit lens I think it is worth every penny of the £150 extra.

I particularly like the weather proofing, as I will use this as a travel lens, which I can use in all conditions. I also like the results it produces.

To buy as a separate lens they are quite expensive Camera Price Buster

So I would get it as the kit and if you don't like it sell it on. I haven't seen very many come up second hand but when they do, they seem to hold their value rather well.

I guess your all saying stop worrying it a great camera go and buy it :)

It indoor low light that worry a me as taking pictures of my 2 years old
