Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I know we've talked a bit about 3rd party batteries but can anyone point out any of the ones on Amazon that are any good?

I can't identify the make/supplier of the one I received with my used EM5 and ideally I'd like another couple of batts.

Can't help with Amazon, I got my two batteries and charger from ebay, search for DSTEbattery. They fit both camera and grip just fine, no tightness and last almost as well as the OEM battery. No complaints here.

On a different topic, went to the airport today and took these aircraft and insects with the same lens! (Olympus OM Zuiko 100mm f2.8)

Thanks Glenn will take a look at those, almost forgot about Ebay to be honest!

That 100mm you have looks to be very versatile, its something I've found in the couple of times I've been down to the airport is that although the 100-300mm is very good for it, sometimes something even just a little shorter would do!!

Cracking shots! I really want to get a shot of the Turkish Air plane.

I have four of the Xpro batteries from Amazon plus a dual charger, all seems fine.

Glenn, that 100mm lens looks lovely, I need to investigate that lens

It's a belter! Here it is on the OM-D, remember on this camera this is a 200mm (equivalent) f2.8 image-stabilised lens, and it's about three inches long, with adapter. I got mine for £62 off ebay!

Not sure why but I keep being attracted to the M43 cameras and then being disappointed with the results - mainly the AF in low light, the lack of or electronic vf and the higher iso....

Have owned the GF1, G1 and GX1 - the small, lightweight kit appeals, as does the selection of lenses especially the fast primes - i do feel the image quality on the GX1 is a definite improvement over the earlier bodies.

Does the OM-D raise the bar further or is it just hype?
How many shots realistically are you getting from an oem battery?
Is the EVF better than the panasonic offerings?
Does the evf still get all grainy and tear/lag in low light?
What's your best feature of your OM-D?

Oh, and am loving the silver - just can't find one in stock locally to see if the flesh:bonk:

OM-D for me is better overall than the EP2 I had and IQ wise I'd say quite close to the Fuji X-Pro 1, especially with the 25mm. Certainly isn't hype the low light performance is much improved and for me the handling is much better than the G3 I considered or the EP2 / GF2 style bodies.

Shot wise really depends on if your using EVF/screen etc, average is suggested to be about 300 but you can get cheap 3rd party batteries which are great very cheaply anyway.
EVF for me is excellent and better than the Panasonic ones I've tried but I can only base that on a quick play in a shop with the Panasonic bodies.
EVF seems fine to me in low light but its never going to match an OVF, none of them are. Best feature of the OM-D for me is the handing, closely followed by the IBIS, its amazing to see especially longer lenses being stabilised in the viewfinder like you would with lens stabilisation.

As for colour I like the Silver too but have a Black one, there have been reports of the Silver paint flaking and being quite easy to scratch, something that the black doesn't seem to have.

Superb info chris - thanks

Anyone know if the banding/issues with the OM-D and 20mm panny combo have been sorted out with the latest firmware?

I'm starting to lust after some of the other M43 lenses again too like the 7-14mm, 45mm and 14mm pancake (even though I have already owned more than one of the 20 and 14s previously :help:)

Not aware that the banding has been fixed yet, its certainly stopped me buying a 20mm as I'd quite like one to go with my 25mm just because of its size... 14mm is nice though.

I've received a 12mm Oly lens today and I think its going to go back, fair enough just a quick play but doesn't seem worth 5-6x more than the only just slower and narrower 14mm.

I'm fairly settled on my 100-300, 25mm and 45mm, but I'm considered what I want at the wider end, I have the 9-18mm and 14mm and now received the 12mm but I'm kind of leaning toward keeping the 14mm, returning the 12mm and selling the 9-18mm to get the 7-14mm but I'm not sure how much larger the 7-14 is on the camera than the 9-18m

I rather fancy an OM-D. Going to check one out soon.

Yeah it does look a cracker although I've been reading elsewhere that it can be prone to purple flare on Olympus bodies (I believe Panasonic Bodies correct for this)

Normally I'd have bought either the 12mm or 7-14mm second hand to try but theres not a massive supply used which tells me that most people keep them!

The 7-14 does exhibit some purple flare on the OM-D but it is manageable with Lightroom 4. I agree with DiW that the photo is deceptive, it is not a big outfit and it does produce great results.

The long end of the 9-18 is useful and it will pass as a walk around lens, you can't do that with the 7-14 as its still too wide. The 7-14 looks like a fish bowl on the front and will not take filters. What don't you like about the 12mm I heard its a great lens on the Oly and better IQ than the 7-14?

Can't say I have noticed banding on the Oly. Def nowhere near as bad as it was on the GH1

Does anyone feel the Oly lenses give better colour on the OMD over the Panasonic lenses?

They might do straight out of camera with JPEG's but I can't say I've noticed any difference with RAW files, although it has to be said I've been mainly using my Panasonic lenses.

I do have concern about the size, its one thing if IQ is excellent on the 7-14 but would I want to take it....

Its really reasons of economy I tend to use the 25mm or 45mm mainly but for walkabout I like something wider, I have the 14mm which is alright and I kind of don't know if the 12mm is that much better than the 14mm considering the massive price gap.

It really comes down to I can't keep the 12mm, 14mm and 9-18mm so I really need to decide if I want to keep the 12mm or return and keep the other two....

If it helps I sold my 7-14 due to lack of use. I found that it was an expensive lens which was superb at what it did but I was lacking the opportunity to take decent landscape shots given location. I always find it interesting looking over a 12 month period at the number of shots taken with each lens.

Your concern re size is valid. The Oly is a small camera and paired with the 7-14 without a grip it may lack balance, the glass is heavy. I would take a trip and find one to try in the hand before you buy

I think it would handle fine on the OMD, I have the horizontal grip on it all the time and I've found myself leaving the battery grip on too as its very handy when using the 100-300.

I do wonder how much I'd use it though, I already have one largish lens in the shape of the 100-300 and with the lineup of Gripped EM5, 100-300, 12, 25, 45 and even if I kept the 14mm to keep a small sized lens that all fits in my day to day "manbag" which means I can take my entire kit with me all the time which is partly my reason for having M4/3 over a dslr.

I've certainly got the location to take some cracking landscape shots but I think the 12mm might get more use generally.

Its also quite telling that in the 2-3 weeks I've had the OMD its been the 45mm and 100-300 that have seen most use with the 14mm not so far behind, I've hardly touched the 9-18mm which indicates to me that certainly for now I might be better with the 12mm

I took my OM-D with 7-14 out last weekend, with the full grip it felt perfectly balanced. I like the combo, but have the 45mm Oly attached now to see how that fairs.

Has anyone else who has a silver OMD experienced what Chris is talking about ?

I was in LCE today and had a quick test of the black OMD. It seems like a great camera. I asked about the silver but didn't see one. I asked the assistant if he had heard anything about the silver flaking etc but he hadn't. His only comment was that the silver finish wasn't as smooth as the black. I think he was describing an orange peel effect as you get on some car paint.

Really interested to hear from others their experiences of the toughness of the silver finish.

I've had a quick read up on this again tonight and it seems like its something that can affect Black and Silver but folk have been talking about it being noticeable from new if its going to happen so have been getting replaced.

Also seems that most mentions I've seen are in the US rather than the UK.

Might be hard to get much feedback in regards the Silver as it seems to be quite rare so far.

Had silver since launch and no probs with the paint, heard some blacks ones have chipped but I would imagine its a small batch as it doen't seem that wide spread.

Hi Richie, and thanks

I've certainly got the location to take some cracking landscape shots but I think the 12mm might get more use generally.

Chris, do you think 12mm (24mm) will be wide enough for the landscapes? Where as 14mm or 18mm of the other 2 lenses is pretty wide.

That looks awesome Julian, lots of detail and nice and sharp

Anyone on here have the Samyang 7.5 fisheye? Been looking at the Image thread over on MU43.com and it looks stunning, fair enough its MF only but for £250 it looks a cracking wee lens and seems to "defish" fairly well in PP too.

This lens seems to get fantastic reviews by everyone - whether fitted to a Nikon, canon, m43 or whatever else body - could be a better alternative to the 7-14 and over half the price - especially as it may not get used alot.

Not quite as versatile as the 7-14 and the 9-18 but still you can cover the 12mm or 14mm with a prime.

Think it goes under several names inc rokinon

That's good to know - I do think the silver with the leather effect grips looks ace
