Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I think those two would look soft anywhere.

Images are soft coming in hosted via flickr too, I spoke about it here the other day. Something we have to live with was all I gained for asking the question.
.... I suggest having your images at 2048px longest side and 300dpi. That's what I do and I don't experience this problem anywhere online.

I thought this one was worth sharing about the OM-1 usage in less than ideal situations.....one might say 'tiger.tiger burning bright in the darkness of the night....'

PS If you read his Biog that puts some context on what he needs in a camera ;)

"But its micro 4/3rds its meant to rubbish" had this exact statement made to me in a hide last week by a full framer sat on high. Me sat with my EM1X and 150-400mm + 1 4TC on a tiny ball head and mini and I mean mini tripod with a reach of 1400 shooting at 1/250th and able to walk 7 miles with a still portable rig

Suffice to say I didn't bite just smiled and went on my merry way the article clearly is testament to micro4/3 thanks for posting

Just need to find some tigers on the somerset levels!!

..... VERY nice! So I am guessing you are very pleased with your OM-1. Paired with the lightweight ED 100-400mm it's gotta be a very practical rig.

Yes Robin I am very pleased with the OM-1, subject detection is very good. Have been toying with trading my 100-400 for the 300 F4 + 1.4 t/c. Rethinking this again because on trading in my used EM1-MK3, I got a nasty surprise. The camera was 18 months old and been out in the rain once, but put back in the bag once the rain got too heavy. Other than that just changing lenses very occasionally in dry weather. I was told there was a line of moisture across the sensor and is costing £245 (Olympus standard charge], hence my apprehension at taking the t/c on and off with the 300F4.

I've been out in heavy rain with my Olympus bodies with the 300mm F4 and either the 1.4x or 2x Converter attached and never had an issue with water ingress. I just wipe the lens and body throughly with a microfibre before removing the lens or converters.

I'd probably ask for the camera back and check it yourself. I remember I was once trading in a Panasonic G9, and got a quote and sent it off to a well know photographic chain. when they got it they tried to knock £200 off the quote as they said the sensor was dirty and had a mark on it (which I know it didn't as I am fastidious at looking after my gear). Anyway, I asked for it back and I couldn't see anything at all on the sensor. I then got a quote from another well known company. Sent the camera off to them but just for the sakes of honesty, mentioned that this other company had made comments on the sensor. However when they received the camera they checked it over and told me it was mint and no marks or damage what so ever and paid me the full asking price.

I know of an almost identical incident which I strongly suspect involves the same company who found the issue.

I have dealt with this company for several years and have always had good service so felt I could trust them. Unfortunately I have already agreed to the repair :(

.... I'm very impressed with the OM-1's subject detection too, including when Tracking is also enabled.

I have owned both the ED 100-400mm and 300mm F/4 Pro (both sold to help fund my 150-400mm TC Pro) but in spite of the 300mm's excellent IQ I find a zoom lens much more enabling for the subjects I photograph. I often shot with my MC-14 mounted on my 100-400mm. However, I never mount/unmount a MC-14 or MC-20 when shooting in a marine environment and rarely do so elsewhere unless I can get inside a vehicle for cover.

All my Olympus/OM gear is used outdoors in all weathers and often all day and I usually rinse it under the shower when I get home < Best to do so with a lens mounted.

.... It's a bit academic now but I'm thinking that it might not be your retail supplier who is untrustworthy but the outsourced examination-repair company they use. I had a similar problem with WEX's outsourced company. When it comes to maintenance or repairs I only trust Olympus themselves or A J Johnstone in Glasgow who were receommended to me by, guess who, a so-called 'grey' importer HDEW who I also trust.

I'll be putting my Olympus gear to the test in a very challenging environment later this year when I spend 8 days on the salt flats for Speed Week at Bonneville.
I tried to get Olympus interested in some marketing material but no dice - they are only interested in wildlife photography (what they told me).
I'm planning on having my gear cleaned when I get back - not sure by whom as yet.

Thanks for the replies Robin, the repair is with WEX sent to Olympus by them, standard repair quoted by Olympus £245. I agree with you about the zoom being more enabling and the image quality of the 300 F4. I would love to be able to afford the 150-400 Pro, but that will only happen with a lottery win o_O

The OM-1 may be a great camera but getting a delivery of one sucks big time. I'm going to need the 5 year warranty as it may well take that long to get one. :D

Haha, I know what you mean. I put in an order for a 150-400 yesterday, not holding my breath on that one. All being well we're off to Namibia in November, would be nice to have it by then...

Keep an eye out for a cancellation for the 150-400 I got lucky a month ago LCE had a cancelled order for the 150-400mm someone kindly posted that LCE had the lens in stock Red Robins review is spot on with regard to the 150-400mm I managed to sell enough camera kit to negate a large proportion of the cost

..... I don't know what the current ETA is and I haven't noticed any current reports anywhere either. I have noticed that the price has gone up by about £400 since I got mine in August 2021 having pre-ordered it in December 2020 but I ain't selling!! No no no, for the subjects I shoot it's my main lens 90% of the time. The ED 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro is my second most used lens.

@The Duke of Bork, Phil I really really do hope you manage to get a 150-400mm TC Pro in time for Namibia. I'll keep my eye out for you too just in case and will PM you accordingly but don't hold your breath. Which body would do you shoot it on?

I did exactly the same as you Terry by managing to sell enough camera kit to negate a large proportion of the cost.

Here is my Practical Review which Terry so kindly refers to - I have been occasionally updating it :

I am occasionally adding information to that thread.

Thanks Robin. I see Ashton Little have one but they want over £7400 for it! I'm not that desperate. Would be a "nice to have" but not essential for Namibia, I have 300 f4 & 40-150 f2.8 & TCs. Shooting OM-1 or EM-1 Mk iii.
