Old F1 pictures on BBC News website

Worryingly, I was at the majority of the races pictured.

Coo - that shot of the photographer close enough to touch the car/wheel. How nuts is that?

Just been looking at them, health and safety would have had a field day. Some. Nice ones from the Gold Cup at Oulton Park.

Those photos are quite tame compared to tales from such as "the Bentley Boys" from pre F1 GP times.

A driver quaffing several bottles of champagne DURING a race.
A driver pouring several gallons of oil into the filler only to be told that it was pouring out of the other side through the hole the conrod had left in the case.
Drivers racing to and from races - on the roads in the race cars.
And many more!

Love those old cars ... Damn dangerous, but super exciting to watch.

I've seen it said that Jim Clark was known for making hand signals at photographers whilst driving. If he thought they were in a dangerous place he wasn't very polite !
But he'd also get them to move to somewhere where they could get a better shot.
Sometimes he'd notice a photographer at a corner and on the next lap do something to make a picture more interesting - slide the rear, clip the apex a bit harder etc.
