Hiya folkies ....

Today I visited Dunham Massey, Cheshire, with some members from this forum and even more members from another forum (EPZ). The mission: photograph the deer rut season.

It was a funny sort of a day .... met at 0630hrs - never ever a good time for me .... made worse by the fact that the mornings are getting darker and colder!!!

However, meeting other people and the ensuing chat of lenses, bodies, filters, etc soon cheered me up ;)

I then got the usual case of lens envy - looking at everyone else with their HUUUUGGGGGGEEEE lenses. I stood there with my little 70-300mm lens. It was also at this stage that I started wishing I had brought my tripod rather than a crappy £11 monopod from Jessops! (Was planning on bringing my tripod but I 'couldn't be arsed' - you know how it is!)

Anyway, the results can be found below. I apologise in advance for the quality. It was dark, my glass is super slow and the ISO was cracnked up to get anywhere near anything usable.

1.) After getting all planned and whacking the 'mighty' 70-300mm lens on, it was taken off in seconds for this shot. It was too dark to use the long lens, so the Sigma 17-70mm came out to capture the sunrise.

2). After a bit of walking around, watching other people and generally wondering what time the coffee shop opened, I saw this little blighter standing under a tree. (I have protected his identity as he wishes to remain anonymous ;) )

3). By now the sun was coming out and I was warming up. I still hadn't got my elusive shot in the bag and was getting a bit tired. Still several hours away from the opening of the cafe (1030hrs), I looked to the heavens for inspiration and decided to take a shot of the moon.

4). At this point, wondering why I had gotten up so early, I plonked myself on a tree trunk (complete with blade of grass in my mouth!). Sitting alone (apart from about 30 other togs and a few joggers), I watched the world go by ..... when suddenly loads of deer ran past me and a few stopped. I thought I'd better get a few deer shots in the bag - so rattled off this one .... was love in the air?

5. I then met a few people from this site (Ffione & her mate). She informed me that she was expecting to meet a girl called Anthea! (The only time I have been known as Anthea was on my stag do .. stag do ... geddit? ;) ). Anyway, after assuring her that I was not female, the 6'2 with stubble gave it away ;) , we walked around for a bit through more wet grass and then I got this shot.

Not sure how many images you can stick in one post ... so hold on whilst I start my next message. Save your replies till I am finished!!!! 5 more piccies to go!!

By now, I was not convinced that I had any 'keepers' in my camera and decided to have a big wander before heading off for home, a coffee and a bacon sarnie. I am man of simple pleasures!

After wandering around the lake for a bit, I managed to get lots of blurry shots of birds taking off and landing on the water and a few abstratc shots of logs .... which weren't really worth pressing the button for!!!

I decided it was time for home.

At this point I got lost!

I know Dunham Massey very well. I live 5mins away. I don't however know the way from Dunham Massey to the nearby pub car park. And luckily for me .... I went the wrong way.

After feeling generally sorry for myself and pee'd off that I had not really captured much ... I stumbled across an area of tranquility. There were NO togs there (there were LOTS of people out this morning). There was also LOTS of deer there!!!

This very obliging chap was sat chilling under a tree .... he let me get to within about 8 foot without a murmur!!! Remember, I was on a 300mm lens!

From there, I walked on up the path .... passing lots of deer doing various things like roaring, playing in bracken, feeding, staring into space and just generally posing!

By now I was pleased that I had got some decent pics of the deer.

I was still however miffed that the images I got were taken about 11am. Hence there was NO reason for me to be there at 0630hrs ..... apart from a dodgy landscape shot that I am not sure about anyway!!!!

I headed off for home .... one the right path this time.

As I approached the gate out of Dunham Massey I passed several people carrying big things and in full combat gear. Was it the TA training ? Were the Royal Marines looking for Bin Laden in a Horse Chestnut tree? No.

It was time for lens envy to strike back as I passed 3 blokes who, judging by the stuff they were carrying and the size of their lenses, could have been working for National Geographic! What were they looking at ????

The strange 'clacking' noise in the distance reminded me ..... why was I here? ... what was it all about ?

Ah yes, the rut!

Not so close this time, but remember ..... I was only on 300mm !!!

Thanks for reading.

Cheers

Nice set. For me 3, 6 and 10 justify your story of the day. Well caught - and well written.

Thanks folks.

Yes, in all honesty I was glad I went. The shots at the end of the day made up for my early morning start - although gotta say I don't think I'm cut out as a wildlife photographer with my super slow glass!!!!

Saying that though, I was actually quite pleased at how slow I could shoot with the help of the monopod .... some of these shots are 1/15th @ 300mm!!! (Obviously this shows slightly in some of the sharpeness).

Cheers.

Nice reportage, well worth getting up for. Though if I lived that close, then I think I'd be there every morning!!

I would love to be ..... it's just a shame my job gets in the way ;)

Still gutted not to have seen more fighting from the deer - but overall I am happy with the keepers that I've got!

Cheers.

Well done mate, nice set!

Number 9 for me but number 8 would have been outstanding if only you had an assistant to hold a reflector and bounce some light into the shadows on the face:thumbs:

With refernce to Anthea from post above.....

If anybody would like to know why Magpieant was called Anthea on his stag dosend me a private message for the full details. Far to rude to place in theopen forum but i can say it involves a one stag naked in the shower, womensclothing, cable ties and a sand bag, one TV at full volume playing Gay pornand a very shocked Hotel manageress.

He loves it lol

Ha ha ha !!!!

If I remember rightly, the hotel manageress wasn't that shocked .... she nipped downstairs to get her camera ..... the image was then displayed on the big plasma screens on the pub .... and i never bought a drink all night .... ;-)

Can't be bad.

Cheers matey!!!

Funnily enough I did actually have 2 stag do's (only one wedding though ;) ) ..... I work in a primary school and I am the only bloke there ;) ..... so I had my 'official' stag do with the lads .... and then an unofficial one with the lasses from work!!

Funnily enough, both resulted in me being dressed as a woman and absolutely hammered!!!!

Back to the photos ..... I was glad with what I got in the end ... even though morning morale was not high!!

And for the record ... I personally think this forum is better than the EPZ one - nothing personal ... just the fact that on that forum, you cannot post your pics in your message!

Let me know if you do Ste ... I'm only 5mins away myself - will join you.

Does she qualify for free coffee???? ;)

Anth

not sure, not been for a while - she aint worked there for over two years, left on maternity leave, and never went back..

yea, would be good having some company, im a total newbie to all this photography stuff - so i could learn a few thing's off you :)

Towershot.

You have failed.

Now the master shall deliver lesson number one ....

Listen carefully Ste my young jedi .... the force is strong with this one .....

The first lesson is always, Thermos.

Thermos. Filled with milky coffee - two sugars.

Lesson number two shall follow ..... ;)

On a serious note, yes Ste - would be happy to tell you all I know about photography ..... dunno what we'll do after those 20seconds are up mind!!!

Cheers.

Anth

First lesson, Fast glass or tripod for 6am shots....:p

Lesson two .... money saving tip ....

Avoid 6am shots, thus saving the need for fast glass or tripods!

And fear not if you're later getting out of bed - the Thermos from lesson 1 will keep the coffee warm!!!!

It's all good.

Anth

Talk Photography??

Maybe it should be called Talk Stag Nights and Star Wars.............

And c'mon what is lesson number three

Lesson number 3 is simple ......

There is no third lesson.

You have to use the fourth! :) ha ha ha ha.

Cheers for the comments on the original images anyway - was pleased I managed to get some in the bag.
