Like you David I'm not a fan of 3x2 in the portrait orientation (I prefer 4x3) but I agree, this particular composition needed the 3x2.

Cropping closely, to avoid spectators (#2) only shows the car, but looks somewhat too tight. Spectators OOF (#1) are acceptable, I think ...

|Spectators defintely acceptable, IMO, if

a) they are OOF or
b) they are in focus but showing interest in thevehicle you are taking a picture of.

Here are a couple from Dartmoor this week, I was out shooting the first snow of the year with my Bronica SQ-B with Kodak Portra 160 and as I always do I used my Leica D-Lux Typ109 in 1-1 aspect ratio to frame compositions before setting up the Bronica and always take a shot to replicate what I will get on the film.

Q3, f8, iso 3200, 12s shutter apparently, handheld as always. Chances are I’ll hit reply and it’ll look like a dogs breakfast. Still working out how to upload high quality images. Yup. Just a pixelated blur

5 shot vertical pano (handheld) - corrected in post of The Black Diamond - Royal Danish Library, Copenhagen with the Q3 -resuting in an image over 125MP (retained detail is certainly decent - look at those cobbles!)
