Official Talk Leica thread

Hi, on the Fred Miranda forum live view functionality issues with the M10-R were reported:

These may be corrected now,.

I would wait with any firmware upgrade for a while, and do it only if I get something out of it ...

the very latest FW adds the new 35/1.4 steel rim lens profile

I’ve had no problem so far…

Hi, so this was a minor update, nothing to do with live view ...

apparently so... although internet wisdom has it that the FW updates always have a little unpublicised bug fix in there

a guy came into the Leica store recently (and I just happened to be in there) with an M10D and his shutter wouldn't open for sensor cleaning and he was on an old FW and the shop tried to fix it by updating it to the latest but it didn't work (camera worked fine otherwise though)

For no other reason than utter GAS driven stupidity and also a genuine case of serendipitously being in the right place at the right time I've recently bought a (secondhand) M10R.

I'm still finding my feet with it... the editing, colours etc... plus it's been nothing but rain in the both the countries I've taken it too!

Overall I'm pleased (phew) it's sufficiently different in IQ to the regular M10 (we could abbreviate that to RM10 and M10R :D ) and most importantly (to me anyway) it doesn't have such a super clinical digital look that I personally associate with high mpx cameras.

But enough talky-talk, let's walky-walk = here's some test shots...

(this one might be bit naughty for social media in today's climate... but I do like it though!!!)

M10R0562.LR.jpg

M10R0549.LR.jpg

If anyone's looking at these to appraise the 10R colour science please note that I've made some pretty big adjustments here, this is driven by my natural dislike of adobe's anaemic modern profile solution and the not bad but a bit much yellow profile that Leica gives us. I generally aim for something vaguely around the M9 colours.

More of my time is required in this area I think, but it's a reasonable first attempt at a base look (yes I say so myself!!!!)

Oh and TP has never let me attach this many pics to a single post before.... I can't believe this is going to work!!!

oh and in case it's of interest.... (unlikely I know)

10R (left) and M9 same aperture/lens/ISO/SS/AWB (ignore LR's aperture guesstimation)

This was after some rainy days and a few hours of profile work (I use Lumariver for this in case anyone wants to fall down that particular rabbit hole)

It's not physically possible to make camera A always render as camera B, but I like my cameras to render broadly similar to one another and as my M9 was my first Leica the colour signature just kinda stuck with me

I would say I'm at the textbook 80/20 rule at this point... where I'm about 80% there with 20% of effort, but to chase down that last 20% will be 80% more work (or 4x the time I've spent so far)

I should probably call it a day... especially seeing as I'm not nearly so far along with my tungsten light profile (which always sucks to make IME)

Another reason to call time on this project is that I spent all of both lockdowns learning how to do this and mrs Adam was very far from happy about the time I spent obsessing about it :D :D

Hi, congrats to your M10-R, Adam!

And thank you for sharing your experiences with it! (y)

That you very much Immo... iirc you were tempted by the 10R (...?) so anything you want to know simply ask (can send DNGs if you want?)

@Adam Bonn Congrats on the M10R, how are you finding the in-focus hit rate compared to your M10?

About the same to be honest, I assume that the R will be less tolerant of sloppy handholding technique.. but the shutter is easier to press so, so far so good... early days though

In fact that quiet shutter has been really nice (it was on my take it or leave it list)

I mainly wanted the R for greater flexibility of the files compared to the 10. I'd rather it was 24mpx to be honest, 40mpx means nothing to me

But (and it's early days) considering that the R seems to be a bit of a forgotten model (I don't think that DPR and definitely DXO even bothered reviewing it) it's actually a bit of a jewel... somehow more grown up than the 10, the files are more malleable, there's more highlight recovery, the colours are a bit deeper, it's more noisy (at 100% on a screen anyway) but the noise is more pleasant to my eye

It's all slightly more clunky and slower than the 10... a fraction longer to boot up, a fraction longer to get a response from a button press (but still much faster than say an M9 or X-Pro1), if the LCD review is anything to go by (and it isn't) then the SOOC jpegs aren't terrible either

There's a native vignette (that's SO going to pi55 me off on my 4 times a year pano stitch) but overall the tonality really appeals to me.

The touch screen is useful for image review (never thought I'd type that), thank **** that all the M10n accessories fit, so I don't need to be buying spare batts etc

Hi, the other day I checked prices for the M10-R on ebay...

What keeps me from getting one?

It is mostly my laziness, and the fact that I am presently quite happy with my M9s and my other toys.

But I wrote presently above... ---

Hi, the other day I checked prices for the M10-R on ebay...

yeah that's my 10R back story... so long story short(er) I'd been playing with the idea of an 10R for a little while... looking what they cost secondhand in stores and on ebay. Anyway a guy I didn't know came to my house to drop off a lens for one of my friends and while I was waiting for him I was browsing 10Rs and I saw one I liked on ebay.

Anyway (I'll get to the point) this guy turned out to be the guy behind the ebay ad I was looking at (literally as he knocked on the door) and I happened to mention I was thinking of getting a 10R, it transpired he was selling the one I was looking at anyway, so we made a deal and I bought it then an there.... (after checking it over very carefully of course)

I got the Leica store to check it over and clean the sensor for me and when I registered it with Leica they said that the original owner's extended warranty carries over to me, so it even has a year left of factory warranty.

I haven't sold the regular 10 yet, but I suspect I will. M9 stays. Always.

Very nice Adam, nice write up, enjoy. I’ve looked several times at the R as I believe the resolution would be better for my kind of photography. And of course the highlight headroom which I believe is a little better than the M10-P.

As I understand it the long exposure options are also improved over the M10/M10P which would be handy for me as well.

Problem is I have an emotional attachment to my M10-P which means I need to keep saving for a while!

Thank you very much Dave,

Yes it looks like in bulb mode you can set a pretty long time at base ISO (I want to say 16mins... then set the shutter delay... but I skim read all that in the manual as I'll never use it, so please check..)

I'd be happier if it was 24mpx!! :D

The M10 24mpx isn't so bad for highlights as they say... but the R is clearly better, and the files from it are nicer to work with IMO than the M10 regular files

I've probably managed to buy the R at the most stupid time as the prices can only go south from here with the M11, while the regular M10 prices are quite stable

anyway here's the regular M10 and some highlight recovery which apparently is impossible :D

Screenshot 2022-11-12 at 16.42.58.jpg

Screenshot 2022-11-12 at 16.43.44.jpg

But make no mistake, the R is better at this.... although the M11 will be better again... just that's still mega bucks, I don't need 60mp (or even 36 and yeah I know you can turn it down to 18) and as daft as it sounds.... (or maybe not) LUF is full of folks complaining about the M11 and if I'd got one I'd need the spare batt, the grip, the EVF etc etc and I already had all of that for the M10, so it was better for me to go to the R. YMMV.

Much like the M10 though, the R mainly responds to BIG changes using the exposure slider

for example

Screenshot 2022-11-25 at 23.27.43.jpg

as shot (on purpose underexposed for testing purposes)

Screenshot 2022-11-25 at 23.27.59.jpg

100% of shadow recovery doesn't do a right lot !!!!

Screenshot 2022-11-25 at 23.28.44.jpg

Although it responds well to large EV changes!

Screenshot 2022-11-25 at 23.34.23.jpg

sure it's noisy with a 4ish stop push (!!) and still with the default NR* settings from 200 ISO, but the colour noise is well handled (to my eye at least) and it's free from excessive banding.

Honeymoon period.... let's see.... not selling the M10 just yet!

*in LR luminance noise slider is 5 @ ISO 100/200 it would be 20 @ ISO 1600, for this shot I left it on 5

Looking at 50mm glass……this caught my eye:

i wonder just how much better that Summilux is to pay another £1725 :) I’m very tempted to try 7artisans/TTArtisan glass. Looks quite good for the price

huge 50 review here

and iirc the TTa 50/1.4 scored very well, but the biggest bang for the buck was the CV 50/1.5

I have a 50 lux asph, which is generally regarded as an amazing lens... typically I leave it at home and use my 50 cron as it's smaller and lighter and I tend to use F4 for most walk about things... funny old world sometimes!

my personal interpretation of lens these days is that it's not so much that the Leica lens is the stand out best lens anymore... it's 'just' the smallest, well made option... which is fine and everything... but when something like the CV 50 APO costs like a 1/5th of the Leica 50 APO and the main advantage of the Leica is that it's smaller then the larger price is very difficult to swallow IMHO

Strangely enough, Flavio (the author of that review) sold me my first m-mount lens. I had just bought my M10 and had nothing to stick on the front of it, so I scoured eBay and came across a lens that he was selling - a Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.5 VM which is included in the comparison review. He didn’t care much for the scalloped focus ring so wanted to get rid of it. He’s a very nice chap who gave me a few helpful tips when I went to collect the lens (I had never shot a rangefinder until that day). He had sold his Leica and was shooting with a Sony A9, but said that he would definitely be sourcing another Leica in the near future. I very much like his style of street photography. He seems to capture some unique scenes.

It’s such a small world sometimes! That’s a nice story

Righty, I'm going to spam you all silly with M10-R photos :D

The weather was dry and I had the day to myself, so I went on a little trip to Aveiro (a colourful town of canals, Portugal's answer to Venice, apparently... except a coffee doesn't cost €12 !!)

I've yet to find anything that makes me unhappy about the 10R (phew) but I think I've still got to find my feet with my look for it... I've made a preliminary 'Adam look' profile that will only change over time...

Still I'm not a million miles off...

In a sentence I'd describe the output from the 10R as kinda hyper-real !!

Anyway, pics or it didn't happen!!!

Lenses used.

(There is a new 3,5/21 Skopar, which performs quite well. Sean Reid compares it to the 4/21 I have ... --- I am quite happy with the Skopar and with my Leica Elmarit asph,
which is very dear to me. It was my dearest i.e. most expensive Leica Lens.)

Love this Immo. Beautiful car.

Yes, it is, Trevor. :) The plate shows it is from the town where OPEL makes cars. And OPEL belonging to GM made it possible for OPEL employees to buy GM cars,
many of which are still around.

Slightly different Leica shots here from the Typ109 shot on 1-1 aspect ratio. I use this setup as a framing device when I am out with my 120 film cameras, I also use the shots in my weekly Blog https://www.ephotozine.com//user/topsyrm-149719/blog as the films are never back in time to include the actual 120 shots. These are 2 from this week's Photowalk on Dartmoor (also posted in my Rambles thread).
