Official Talk Leica thread

Back in the days when the Science Museum's storage facility at Wroughton Airfield was (irregularly) open to the public, I used to take my Leica M3 for a toddle round, every so often. Their biggest exhibit was the impressive Lockheed Constellation, an airliner dating from World War II. It was designed to be faster than a Japanese Zero fighter and set all sorts of new records during and after the war...

Hi, a Christmas snack ... (M9 - Summicron 2/50 v5 ; f 2; crop) :

A poor man's snack : ALDI Advent calendar, ALDI champgane, ALDI oysters, taken with an old Leica M9 and an old Leica Summicron. This looks like a call for donations.

But it is not. I am coping ...

It's a comedy classic you've never too young for. Lets just say he'd think you'd made a silly mistake and would say so very directly :D

Hope you get an adapter soon and I'll look forward to seeing some pictures.

after waiting a week for this, i now realise i need a L39 to LM adaptor.

Take care to get the right adapter they are focal length matched. If you get the wrong one it will not show the correct frame lines, not that I've made that mistake you understand.............. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I noticed that, I'm just concerned i've ordered from someone who's not going to dispatch today....

weirdly their URL shows 35-135 but product is 50-75

and it's the opposite for the alternate one.

How do they do this? I thought these were dumb adapters but maybe there's a key or something?

Not really sure Alan but they have the lens lengths marked on them and they cover the same ranges as the framelines do. I presume that when each lens is fited there is a cam on the mount that triggers the framelines which is not on the screw mount lenses so when you use an adapter they will all accept the screw lens but they need (I think) the correct cam for the length to set the framelines correctly. I just know that when I got my 3.5cm Summaron screw mount I bought an adapter off the bay but it fetched up the 28 and 90 framelines and when I checked it had 28-90 on the mount so I bought one with 35-135 and that worked fine. Don't get me wrong the other mount worked but just didn't activete the correct framelines.

Thanks. I though it must be some sort of mechanical link. The next question could be why does it call up two frame lines for such different focal length lenses?

The photo shows a 50-75 so I'd guess that's what you will get. Also this " Please note: this adapter is only compatible with cameras that use an electronic viewfinder. " is not correct they work with the standard optical viewfinder as on the M9 and film MP.

i didn't notice that! I suppose that's why they show a photo of it being used on a Leica M6...

On later Leicas like the M9 and the later film Ms like M6. MP, MA etc the viewing window has 2 framelines for each of the 3 settings, in the old days like the M2, M4 etc they only had one per setting but you only got 3 choices 35, 50 and 90.

Just out of interest as I've never seen your lens before I've been trying to read up on it. I saw this...

I think it's probably different to my lens, but then again, who knows? This is mine on Ken Rockwell...

Good luck with it. I'll be interested to read what you think and see your pictures. I use so many old film era lenses that I forget what I used when I'm looking at pictures now.

It'd be great to achieve what feels like film character from using older lenses on the M9 - nothing to lose by giving it a go, as i'd probably be able to sell it all for similar price.

Trouble is now not looking at other lenses :)

Looking through my purchase history I'm shocked at what I've spent on film era lenses but as you know if you buy carefully you'll probably not lose enough to keep you awake at night.

If going for a Leica set up I think I personally would want to keep it down to a minimal kit with maybe just one or two lenses but that's just me and that's certainly not something I've been able to do with my Panasonic, Sony and adapted lenses.

Good luck resisting the urge :D

Well still have the Q2 and Q2M as well my Sony A1 pair and Sony lenses .. trying not to spend too much - i was saying to Lou if I wanted to keep the M9 i could sell a Q2.. but she said nah can keep all :) ...cool

A HAPPY NEW YEAR to all participants (and the many silent viewers) here ! - My GUCKI from 1973 ... (SONY A7R2 - LEITZ Macro-Elmarit 2,8/60 f 2,8 ) :

DSC03686-a7r22-L60-28.jpg

I bought the GUCKI to view my slides taken with my PORST (Practica) CX6 when I was a student. In the early 1970s, prints had horrible colours. So, for me it was either B/W or slides.

Later, I bought a mechanical ROLLEI slide projector, when I had saved the money. So much for the austere past. ---

The future? - We shall see a Leica M11 (hopefully) this year. I am curious if all my desiderata will be realized. However, being cautious, I would wait for the first microcode upgrade in any case, and until the production ramp-up has been managed successfully quality-wise.

An aquaintance of mine frequently referred to his as "the Ghastly Gucki". He had the later model, which didn't fold and he always had it in his jacket pocket, so he can't have disliked it that much! ;)

(MORGAN reminds me of Leica and the M. Both are SMBs with a great name, their products showing minimal upgrades over the years.

And they have extremely loyal, happy customers ... --- )
