Another oldie: Kitzbuhel from the Hornbahn (Leica M3, Elmar 90mm)

Had a day in the madness that is London Town yesterday! It really is chaos in parts, such as Oxford St etc. but always fun

I have to say in passing as the Leica Store is close to Selfridges and the Wife always wants to go to Selfridges I always enjoy a quick nose round the Leica shop

Unlike other specialist camera branded shps a warm welcome is always on hand with no pressure to buy, just a willingness to be of help.

(Nikolaus looks almost menacing ... - In my childhood, Nikolaus rewarded good children. But he had an assistant - Knecht Ruprecht - who punished naughty children,
sometimes even by birching.

Those were the days. - Today, people would get excited about RUPRECHT-traumatizations ... --- )

Hi, it is always nice to see a ROLLEIFLEX! (y) I must try to find my GX 2.8 some day ... ---

Every now and then, on rainy days, I think about "super-FF" cameras like the FUJIs.

What keeps me from buying? Mainly the bulk, because ultimately I will always prefer using Leica Ms.

I have the same thing with my NIKON. It is used only when necessary ... ---

The nearest thing that I've found to a digital version of the original Leica concept of a small interchangeable lens camera, which you could take everywhere you went, is the (sadly discontiued) Panasonic GM5.

It seems reasonable to imagine that the Panasonic team were thinking of Oskar Barnack's original intentions when they came up with this (which accepts Leica branded lenses)...

...and the little GM5s take nice pictures, while still being smaller and lighter than any competitors that I've come across...

The Leica M10 series is exactly following the original trend since it is the same size as the M3/2s of yesteryear and accepts all the same lenses.

It's interesting that. at the time of its introduction in 1954, the M3 was criticised for being "big as a Contax". At 580 grams it was actually heavier than the Zeiss offering of the time; the Contax IIa weighed in at 510 grams. The IIIc had weighed less than 435 grams, so the increase was substantial and very noticeable, especially when I used my IIIc and M3 side by side...

Nice commentary, at the end of the day one has to shoot what one enjoys shooting with! I enjoy shooting a number of different brands including Leica, and really couldn't give a toss what others think in fairness!

Peace out!
This is it. Almost everything we do in life is for a feeling. I have a Leica m9p and I love it. I don’t give a sh%t about the technical stuff. No camera has made me go out and shoot as much as my Leica has. It makes me feel good and I enjoy it.

I find that many and varied cameras "ring my bell". Some are good for one thing and others are good for other things. One thing that none of the current Leica branded bodies seem ideal for is pictures of far away objects. Plug a Leica DG-Vario-Elmar 100~400mm into a Panasonic G9 and you get a smashing long distance tool...

Hi, this is life. There are no universal tools with full performance, and no perfect cameras ... ---

Which is why I use SONY and NIKON, too.

Hi, every now and then a dream camera, a Digital ROLLEI comes (and goes), coming from this ... :

DSC02202-a7-5-s35c.jpg

But dreams, especially about the past, can deceive: My dear ROLLEI had a 3,5/40 lens, no distance metering, 1/500 shutter speed, small finder, no IS,
but it is compact.

Trying to be realistic, my daily walkabout camera, a SONY A7 with the SZ FE 2,8/35 is vastly superior, but not compact.

If I were less stingy, I could easily change this, buying a SONY A7C, which is a little more compact than my A7, and it has IS ... ---

You want compact? These are compact... :naughty:

Any of you using Leica glass on a (non-Leica) full frame digital camera? Would like to get some more use out of my 28/35/50 but I'd lose the FoV on my current Fuji. I really like the form factor of the Ms though and don't want a big bulky DSLR/Mirrorless.

Not me but given the Leica M flange distance of 27.80 mm, the Eos R sounds like a good bet. It seems ever so small for a full frame body.

Hi, I used to do it a lot years ago with SONYs (NEX3. -5N, -6, A7) up to SONY A7R2. Nowadays I only use VOIGTLÄNDER 12 and 15mm lenses, rarely with the A7R2.

Here a few M mount lenses on Leica and SONY compared:

Two main factors influence performance: FL - the longer the better, and filter stack thickness, which is currently best with the NIKON Z5 (1,1mm).

But I do not have any experience with the Z5 and I have not heard/read from other, reliable sources.

Every now and then I think about buying a Z5, but I have not done so up to now ... ---

I’ve tinkered with my 35mm & 50mm Summicron on my Nikon Z6. Image quality is very good, nothing to share I’m afraid as I was just trying it all out.

Nikon Z6 works well with the M lenses though for focus peaking and manual focus.

My Ricoh GR3 is probably an equivalent size. APS-C but it works nicely as a 28mm p&s and the file quality is remarkably good.

There’s been quite a bit of chatter on the Leica forum about this lens, given how much of a copy it is to the Summaron 28mm.

I really hope it lives up to some of the hype, I’d like a 28mm lens and this looks a real little sweetie.

The current CV 28/2 has gathered much praise too… the announcement of the CV 50/1 has got folks eager too!

That TTa does seem to have some charm though

Price is always a winner…. If it’s any good of course :ROFLMAO:

I’ve had a couple of 7artisans 35mm f2’s previously and to be honest I thought they were crap!

I picked up a 7Artisans 35mm f/2 and it wouldn't even attach to my M3. Sent straight back.

TTa and 7a apparently aren't the same people...

I have some photos I like with my 7a 50/1.1 - but my copy looks really de-centred tbh!

Still like an old motorbike with a big engine, it's a cheap way to go fast!!

not sure if this is wide open or 1.4 (LR says 1.7 but that's just a guess)

I don't have a Leica nor am I ever likely to as I just couldn't justify the price but I do have a question: How popular is the Monochrome version? It seems a lot of money and heavily restrictive so at whom is it aimed?

My guess is that it's people who prefer black & white photography. I have no idea how popular it is, but I doubt Leica would mass manufacture it if it wasn't.

There is a technical thing with the colour sensor array that sits over the actual sensor. A B&W camera doesn't need such an array and therefore records light in the purest of ways. I would imagine this gives people a sense of getting a more "perfect" result, although in a sense, it is true black & white photography. I'm not a pixel peeper so I couldn't tell the difference, but there are probably loads who could. This article explains it in a bit more detail: https://petapixel.com/2021/04/09/are-black-and-white-only-digital-cameras-crazy-in-this-day-and-age/

For me, I prefer black & white. I could give you an expansive diatribe about "purism" and the distraction of colour, but at the end of the day, black and white gives me photographs I much prefer over colour. I shoot film, which means I'm changing the "sensor" out every time I choose what film to put in the camera - black & white, or colour. This last year, I've shot 20 rolls of colour vs almost 90 rolls of B&W, with those 20 rolls being almost all landscape type stuff shot exclusively in Spring & Autumn.

If someone gave me £7k to drop on a camera, I wouldn't get an M10 Monochrom. But if I won the lottery, I probably would. :)

If you want a poor man's alternative, I believe there are companies that will convert your camera for you, similar to an IR conversion, but I have no experience of it. (e.g. https://www.monochromeimaging.com/)
