Official Talk Leica thread

Hi, ... my model Basima (SONY A7R - LEITZ Macro-Elmarit-R 2,8/60 f 2,8 ; crop):

DSC03228-a7r22-L60r-28-c.jpg

I use the Macro-Elmarit not as a proper macro lens; occasionally only for close-ups, mostly as an allround lens. It is a good lens, even by modern standards.

It received enthusiastic reviews on dear susan ("The soulful engineer"). - Not all German engineers are awarded this epithet ... --- :)

From what I remember, it did move with the cursor button. Found by accident... unless I'm mixing it up with the m10...

Yup you’re mixing it up with the m10, the 240 magnified EVF point is stationary

I THINK that on the 10p/r you can move the focus point tapping on the touch screen, but with the regular 10 you have to press the D pad buttons (like a 2012 fuji ) and there’s no quick way to return it to the centre!

The 240 EVF better suits the camera, the M10 one is clucking massive and blocks some of the SS dial, but the 10 one has twice the res and a better refresh rate.

Mine spends most of it’s life in my camera bag

Correct. The EVF is a bit of a brute, but it does work reasonably well.

The Rangefinder doesn't have an EVF it has a viewing window that has a rangefinder patch super imposed in it by the actual range finder mechanism there are 2 boxes which you line up the images on the object you want to be in focus its simple to use but very difficult to explain. There are Youtube videos on focussing rangefinders. It's no different to a film rangefinder. There is nothing else in the window, no electronic view to enlarge. Any camera that has an EVF is not a rangefinder even if the EVF is on the left of the camera.

Thanks. I've had a couple of RF's in the past so I'm familiar with how they work but I've never used a digital one so I have no idea how they work.

So, just to be clear, a digital RF doesn't have an evf and still has the optical and single fixed and not moveable patch in the centre?

Hi, my M9 works like my film M6 when focusing.

ad1 and 2) Lens and the optical focusing mechanism are mechanically coupled. You turn the distance ring on the lens and a small split patch in the centre of the viewfinder image
can be aligned. If aligned, the image is focused, The focusing patch cannot be moved.

ad3) You cannot call up a magnified view when taking the picture. (You can magnify the picture after it has been taken for checking focus etc.)

I do not know the focussing of other Leicas (SL2 or Q2, and I do not care. Leica is Leica M for me).

I live with the strengths and limitations of my Leicas. They are complemented by other cameras (SONY and Nikon).
Thanks.

I just wondered how the modern digital RF's work.

And a PS.
One of the things I remember I liked the most about RF's was that with the camera to my eye I could see beyond the area to be captured and could therefore see anything just outside the frame and take the shot accordingly. Sometimes that is nice, IMO, but of course I could always keep the other eye open to see anything about to enter the frame :D

The more modern ones have the ability to mount an additional EVF to the Hot Shoe but as standard they are just the same as the old film rangefinders except after the M9s Leica did away with the extra window that used to illuminate the framelines the newer ones use LED framelines so don't need the window. Other than that they work exactly like the older M9s/8s and film bodies they just have more bells and whistles (live view, video etc(not all)).

Thanks. I don't think I'll ever have a new digital RF but it's nice to know what to expect if it ever happens.

'Tis but the act of saving a 100ukp per month and several years wait....
or a lotto luck.... or selling any older gear to make the majority up ;)

It's not cheap, but a new z7mkii is only a bit cheaper than a used m10...

Yes the rf way is different to the modern (auto)focus, which is nice. With the evf, its the same as the digital focus (just manual not auto).

Does have a good feel to it, and I'd recommend playing in store if you can... and maybe ask the sales people to let you know about any that might fall within budget....
but dont forget a lens... doesn't have to be leica (as those can be the same price as the body) and adaptors work well (also pricey but no need to buy a new lens)...

Hi, M mount on Leica M10-R and SL2 experiences, posting #7:

One could find this a little disappointing, expecting that Leica M mount lenses work perfectly on the Leica SL2 - which is said (or rumored (?)) -
to have the best sensor stack for M mount lenses ...

Impressive performance for an over 40 year old lens, I think ... --- My SONY A7R2 is back-level. Options: Leica M10-R - has higher res, but no tilt-screen, no IS.

Leica SL2 - no tilt screen, "heavy metal", not perfect for all Leica M mount lenses. SONY A7R4 - 61MP, worse than my A7R2 with Leica M mount lenses?.

Will 20MP higher res show with my lenses ???

Hi, a M9 bokeh comparison:

#1 ZEISS Distagon 1,4/35 f 1,4 crop :

#2 Summarit 2,5/75 f 2,5

I find this quite interesting ... A slower lens with a longer FL can produce quite a nice bokeh ... ---

For the amount of money assuming buying new, perhaps they have a trial for a day where you could do some tests with the lenses for comparisons (bring your own card, lenses etc)

Hi, being undecided about rangefinder and mirrorless bodies, I ordered a NIKON D850 for my vintage car rallye and bird pictures ... ---

My wife is looking forward to receiving my D800, her fifth NIKON DSLR ---
