Official Talk Leica thread

Red Dot Camera have a quite nice Q listed.
I did see that but think I will wait for something better cosmetic-wise, (going on their grading description) :)

Keep an eye on Leica Manchester, unless its changed…. They do a 1 year warranty on used gear compared to 6 months from most places

Mate. I was lucky enough to get a beautiful Q-P. Stupidly let it go coupla years ago. Then discovered just how hard it is to find another. Especially in decent condition.
Let it go due to a financial event…
Good condition Q are incredibly hard to find.

Yes I was reading about induced black paint failing fad, bit like ripped jeans today I guess - MPB have a couple of decent ones but not sure if I want to pay what they are asking.
I may aim lower actually, seen a couple of options that might suit.

Well I bit the bullet and have a Q coming tomorrow.
Just like the style of it and FF will be nice too. :)

Great! I hope the Q works out better for you than the X2
Thanks, at least it's still supported by Leica, which was the deciding factor in sending the X2 back. :)

Nice one. Looking forward to some pictures. And your views on the camera.

Hi, same car as above, different lens, and place ... (M9 - Summarit 2,5/50 f 2,5):

(The bokeh is nice, I think. The Summarit I bought used for 700 € years ago is no longer a cheap Leica entry lens.

Prices on ebay are around 1300 € now. There was a time when the Summarit used was as much as the ZEISS Planar new ... )

Leica Q arrived this morning and looks to be a great example, not a mark on it. Came with lens hood and all the bits inc leather strap, manual etc.
Quick check shows it’s on the latest firmware (3.1) but battery almost exhausted so now on charge before doing anything more.
Any tips for resetting/setting-up welcome.

congratulations, hopefully second time’s the charm…

check that the sensor doesn’t have dust, apparently dust can get into them but being a fixed lens camera it’s not so easy to get it out!

Will do, thanks. :)

Looks all clear ... possibly the camera has done just over 10,000 clicks, unless numbering has been reset at any stage. :)

Sounds good. Pretty low click count.

That Look by Bristol Streets, on Flickr

First impressions:
  • It fits nicely in my hands and seems perfectly balanced.
  • Easy to get my head around the menu system.
  • Cracking lens.
  • Seems to under-expose but I need to practice - dialling in compensation via the menu doesn't 'stick'.
  • The video rec button! - I unknowingly recorded several short videos when I thought I was taking a shot ... can't disable/reassign it !!!
  • Leica Fotos App seems playful, I can see that being useful for remotely controlling the camera on the street.

Wwent out today to a little place some kilometres up the coast.

Took the 10R, 28 elmarit, 35 cron and 50 lux. Mainly used 28!

That's about as much highlight recovery as you'll get out of an M10R, not bad (in a every other camera could do this 10 years ago sorta way) and a bit better than the regular M10, but IMHO not quite the vastly superior highlight recovery that folks like to state on certain brand-centric forums

In fact here's the regular M10

to this

So yeah some better... and the file is more flexible (I find I need a lot of negative exposure to recover highlights with the M10 which is hard if I also want to recover shadows, but the 10R can do more of both shadow and highlight in the same photo)

But I do really like the 10R tonality and colours, I mean I make my own camera profiles, but I seem to be able to get more outta the 10R than the 10...

and BIG congrats on the grandkid.

Cracking street photo, I like how you've taken the whole hey is that guy taking my photo look and owned it

Most Leica's seem to love to underexpose...

Is there not a scroll wheel on the back to adjust the EV, the M has this and it survives a power off/on cycle

Thank you :)
Yes there is a scroll wheel on the back to change EV but there is also a Menu entry 'Exposure Compensation' where I can add an adjustment, but it doesn't seem to stay ... not quite sure at what point it reverts to 0.0 but it does.

I've only had Ms and on these you sometimes need to enable the wheel on the back for it to work in the menu. The 10R can also adjust EV from the touch screen, but I think perhaps I have to press OK for it to stick... really I just turn the wheel, and often only because I'm in aperture priority mode for speed* it's a 'moment' and I don't have time to adjust the ISO (so say ISO100 offers me 1/60 and I think no, not for this shot I just twiddle the wheel -1ev, get 1/125 -and a dark picture- then adjust it in post)

*generally A mode works ok when I know what to point the camera at to meter (it's off the shutter in an M like the film cameras)

I think getting my finger 'muscle-memory' in order will probably help! :)

I see you have a Zeiss 50/F2 and a Leica 50/F2. What makes you choose one over the other?

Hi, I bought the Planar after the Sonnar, because the Sonnar showed CAs on my MFT Olympus Pen EP-1 in my early adapting days.

The Summicron I bought later out of curiosity. What I liked and like about it is the sliding hood, and its compactness, making it easy to use.

When going out taking pics I rotate the lenses. Basically, they are all good, and they perform almost on the same level.
