OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Leica MP
Leica M-P

The Leica website says that the MP is, "The Ultimate Tool", but that honour clearly goes to their head of marketing.

That is weird indeed MP = film, M-P = digital? What were they on? (they can clearly afford expensive "consumables"!)

Surely the "-" is a minus sign; "MP" = "M series, photography" and "M-P" = "M series minus photography".

Tee hee, I like that Stephen. Made me LOL

C'mon. Show us. I wanna be envious..

3 previous attempts to upload have failed ..... I assume due to 'user error' but I can't see what I'm doing wrong.
I will try again though any hints in advance would be appreciated.
One constraint may be that I'm looking to upload the images from my laptop (rather than a URL).

Click on the "Upload a file" button in your reply to the thread. Select the file you want (must be less than 350k, 1024px on the long side). That should put a thingy in your reply with text that says "Insert:" - click the "Full image" button next to it, and it should insert the image to your post. Repeat as necessary.

Ah ok cheers, the 350k max file size may be the issue.... I'll check and downsize as required

Is no one buying any cameras lately ? I keep an eye on ebay and it looks like prices for 35mm cameras are still on the rise. It is those digital owners who are now dipping their toes in the film world. My Minolta Dynax 7 has developed a sticky back, and I will be attempting to clean it with Isopropyl Alcohol in the next day or so. But why am I posting all this guff here ? BECAUSE, last night after a few cans I went to the ?bay and secured another Dynax 7 for a not too dear a sum. It should be with me by the end of the week.
I do not want a round of applause, - only looks of envy from the rest of you.:D:banana:

I wish I'd known... I've got a Minolta Dynax 7000i sitting here on a shelf doing nothing (with a Cobra 700) hammerhead flash... I don't have any lenses for it though so I haven't had a chance to play with it.

Spiritflier, Keep an eye on ebay for Minolta gear. As a result of buying a Minolta 800si in the late 90s, I fell for the Minoltas. Managed to get a 2nd 800 for £40 4 yrs back. And the bargain of my life - a Dynax 9 from ebay for £160, and it included the grip.

Nice....If you are not a dedicated filmie a good combo is digi for general use and Medium format film to slow down and enjoy taking pictures.

Snagged these identical twins at London Camera Exchange yesterday
They seem to be Kiev 4-2 with Jupiter 53mm f2 lenses.
Looking forward to getting to know them.

They look in good shape, nice catch.

BTW, maybe you already know this but the first 2 digits of the serial number are the year of manufacture (the same for the lens), and check the light-meter because I have a KIEV-4M too and still works. :)

Thanks Areil. Both bodies and lenses appear to have been made in 1976.
Light meters work on both. Probably a stop or so optimistic.
Yes they are in good condition with just a little leatherette coming unstuck.
Just need a spare few hours and better weather to shoot them.

Received the Pentax Z-1 bought on here from @welshwizard645. First impression on opening it: this is a beast, a monster, huge! Does look in extremely good nick though. I've not even noticed the cracked base plate yet.

Apparently Peter put a new battery in for me, thanks Peter.

Second impression... where's the shutter speed dial? Indeed, where are ANY controls? Happily he included a manual... RTFM, Chris...

Some time later... I'm beginning to doubt whether this will be a keeper for me, though I'll give it a go (my problem, not Peter's). Lots of modes and dials and displays and things that go beep beep beep when you focus. It's obviously meant for autofocus lenses, and I've none down where I'm staying, and only one overall (Pentax-F 24-50, IIRC). No microprisms etc for focusing aids, but as mentioned there are beeps and green focus indicators instead. It's an entirely different experience, much more like a digital camera with film inside than the sort of conventional, basic manual camera I'm used to.

Won't it take your manual focus lenses?

Yes, it does, though focusing seems more hit and miss, as the prism screen is less useful for that purpose. You have to use the focus confirmation light and associated beep, and I'm currently unsure how accurate these are. Annoyingly, I didn't have a 24-shot Poundland Vista roll with me, so have loaded a 36-shot Vista 400, which costs a bit more and will take a while longer to finish.

If you are going to the meet I could bring up the Pentax M 24-35mm zoom for you to see if it's any good from the results.....I've used it and posted results (of Holland) and think it's quite good (for a zoom).

Actually, after a walk on the Quantocks today, the Pentax Z-1 is rather fun. Yes, it's heavy, but you can stick it in what's basically P mode and blast away. Finished that Vista 400, and 14 shots into some FP4 now! It's a bit like having a mahoosive Oly mju II with a changeable, quality lens on it!

That would be interesting, Brian, thanks. I'm expecting to be there.

No problem Chris it's very small......I couldn't find it at first and the reason was:- for some reason it was on my Ricoh camera with a 2Xs converter looking like a 135mm lens

THe Super A or the MX are the Pentax cameras I tend to pick up most when shooting film, but that's mainly because I keep forgetting how nice the Z1 is for just using. It knows how to get out of your way!

My father-in-law loaned me this little beauty, a Ferrania falco S. I know they were Itallian, made about 1949-50 (or 1950-51) and that's about it. He bought it new in Egypt when he was out there doing his national service. Used it until the mid seventies when he went over to 35mm. Anyone know anything about them or ever used one? The bellows seem light tight and the shutter fires and sounds quite snappy (no pun intended). The lens IS clear, it's just a reflection in the photo, apart from a little dust it's clear.

I've got a couple of rolls of FP4 on order to try it out. Having never used one before, any pointers to look out for would be appreciated.

Although I've used many folders, my usual error is setting the focusing distance.

Sometimes I've fallen lucky where it's already been at infinity from a previous frame and has suited the present shot or the DoF has allowed for my error......however I've regularly had to retake shots due to my own incompetence......Four frames out of a roll of film aint funny!

The other regular hiccup is to forget to wind the film on ending up with double or triple exposures......mindst at least that way you can get value for money and can obtain 24 frames on a roll:D

All that said, they're generally good fun to use....Enjoy!

Can't do that on his one, the shutter release is locked until the film is wound on.

Thanks for the tip about focusing. As you say 4 out of a roll ain't funny.

My new toy arrived today, a Nagaoka field camera. It's so light to carry around and is a heck of a lot quicker and easier to set up than my Arca monorail! Took it to Sturminster Newton Mill to try it out, and the negatives are drying as I type. I've wanted a proper wooden field camera for ages and I'm so happy to have one now. Got a couple of weeks to practice using it so I don't make myself look silly at the Peaks meet. Well, one less reason to look silly anyway :D

No idea how to pronounce Nagaoka though... Is it "nag-uh-oh-ker", "nag, uh, ack, er" or "nag-woah-ker" :S

However you say it, it's an impressive bit of kit.

I'd go with Nag - eh - oak - ah

Edit: ... and thanks to John, below :) I'd forgotten about that.

Sounds like Nag - ow - ka

very nice

''Nagaoka is a city located in the central part of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It is the second largest city in the prefecture, after the capital city of Niigata''

you can get an audio clip -- use google

I'm really intrigued by my perception of a different scene on the ground glass to the one in front of the camera.

Nice camera, by the way :)

Pheww, an answer at last. It's been bugging me since I started looking into them a few days ago. "Nag-uh-oak-er" is what Google tells me :D

When I looked at the photo I thought the same  It's actually just the reflection of the field behind me :D

On reflection, I should have known :D

That's two of us then in the Nagaoka club, should we start hassling the mods for our own section?

Sectioning, that sounds like a sensible idea. :D
