Hi Guys,

how do you avoid running to fat? I find myself sitting on my arse doing FA energetically speaking apart from the odd wee break. Also get bored and eat.

Thoughts?

amen to that.. sat around all day eating biscuits has done nothing for my waist line.

need to buy another bike after i move house..

I don't exercise but don't eat too many biscuits either. So while I am not fit I'm also not (too) fat.

Don't have any food (especially chocolate, biscuits etc) in or on your desk.

If feasible, walk to and from work.

Avoid alcohol.

Drink loads of water to increase the frequency of those wee breaks.

Ignore my advice! I spend way too long sat doing sodall and am fat!

This is one of my offices ...

And i walk and ride my bike a lot

I've been an office worker for the last 15 years but my waistline has only just started to increase in the last 2 or 3 years so I put it down to heading towards middle-aged rather than being a desk jockey.

I'm still relatively slim so I probably look a lot fitter than I actually am. I never do any exercise at all so if I jog up a flight of stairs I'll be knackered for about 10 minutes.

My trick to living a long and heatly life is to eat whatever I want when I want and it's working so far!!

I am about alot so not always sitting in one place, if for whatever reason I am I sometimes go for a wander, even just around the building (which to be fair is huge here) not sure if it would be the same for you

Cycle to work and make sure to get solid (>1.5hrs) exercise at least twice a week - more often if you're doing the exercise in shorter stints. Have a banana or piece of fruit instead of chocolate at morning coffee. The usual - it's all well-known and boring, but it does work!

its a 10-15 minute drive and I know 2 people that have been knocked off bikes cycling it so balls to that

I just get really hungry

will try walking more

maybe walking to the pub

also giving up booze is NOT an option

Unless it's all uphill or on the motorway, you'll do a 10-15 min drive in 10-15 mins on a bike. That's 20-30 mins of exercise every day. Getting some training on cycling safely will really help your confidence too. How many people do you know that have had car crashes? Straight away I can think of at least 4 and there are probably a lot more I either don't know about or have forgotten.

Isn't there an office "bike"? :naughty:

surely that depends on how much traffic there is? i.e. - 10 mins sat in traffic vs 10 mins @ 50mph.

all the cycle training in the world wont account for car drivers cutting you up. (been knocked off a couple times myself)

1...keep you fit......
2...you'll have no money left for biscuits, chocs, and booze....

I was already fat but am actually slimmer as my hours etc let me swim 3 times a week! I also have personal training once a week too. The biggest problem with a desk jockey job is the hunger. It leads to chocolate!

Spread your meals out over the day. As in have your breakkie before work. Then 1st break, you could have some chicken, lunch have a big salad with dressing, then last break you could have some tuna with salad. Cut out crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks. If you aint excercising then I would keep carbs at a minimum and make them complex. Have a pack of oatcakes to nibble on during the day.

No pain no gain!:naughty:

There is no other options that exercise and not eating rubbish. I was a bit similar when I worked in an office and spent time eating also. As said drink plenty of water and really you need to start exercising, maybe after work, you only need to run around the block or something, nothing major, just get your heart going. Cycling to work in the winter wont be fun, so you need to do something to get your body going.

Ive started back at the gym now and I feel great, you feel better mentally and physically you get fit too, so there isnt really a replacement for that.

fully on board with that idea, till I look round the office.....:gag:

I like this one but needing to fit another person around work and builing up the photography would drive me nuts

Exercise before work, I'm in the gym before 05:00 am Monday to Friday and a bonus day if I get to work the weekend too. I only get two lunch breaks a week and they are spent in the gym too doing cardio. OK we do have a gym at work which makes things easier but a local gym is always open when I drive past on my way to work.

miss it now

Two or three times a week, get home from work and go for a 20 minute run, then back and shower. Tis supremely refreshing especially after a slog in a London underground sweatbox to get home.

That and not consuming any sugar, and avoiding white bread at work is enough to counter-act the weekend's excesses :)

I may have read that while easting cake :p might give the run thing a go

how do you start off with running, coming to it cold as it were

I only started a few months ago with a view to getting in shape to start playing rugby again next season. Just bought some cheap trainers and ran out the door. Started at 3k and now do a 4.5k loop that I'm just doing faster each time. One thing I would say is it can bring up little niggles you didn't know you had....I now know the outside of my right knee is a bit weak and tendons in my left foot are prone to tendinitis! Never used to happen when I played rugby (10 years ago) , so I guess it's just getting old :(

Only took a week or so before the run becomes enjoyable rather than punishment. I did a 10k a couple of weeks ago which is good as it gives you a target, and it's not really a difficult distance.

I'm no expert though, I'm sure some experienced runners will tell you all about gait analysis and getting the right trainers etc....which I should really do sometime.

Hi David. :)

Be like me and become a tomato greenhouse worker. Try and last out the six-months long growing season in a hot sweaty greenhouse in the middle of a heatwave involving lots of bending over . . . and watch how the weight literally drop off.

Yes, I'm 5' 11", aged 43 and weigh only 10 and a quarter stones. :shake: :D

PS: A side thought, I wonder if you are like me and is a keen Star Trek fan? the 1701 bit at the end of your name is the same registration number as The Enterprise.

****in ell 3k, can you build into it slower than that :p

might buy some trainers

are you meant to wear something special as a lot of runner look like gimps :p

Running in cheap trainers will make your niggles worse.

They dont have to be the ultimate running shoes etc, just decent ones.

I bought a pair of 'army' branded trainers, I cant recall the actual maunfacturer, 2 days before a half marathon (that I had done no training for!)

I did the run, and got no blisters, but more importantly they lasted me a good year of running, good robust trainer, I now wear Asics Gel.
Get yourself to runners point, they will put you on a treadmill to see if you over/ under pronate, no pressure to buy, some might charge you a tenner.

I found myself up to 14 stone, just shy of 6' so decided to have a major change.

Stopped smoking, started running and gym. Do 3-4 mile 3-4 times a week. ONly lost about half a stone but can just get into a 32 waist again :)
