Yoo hoo. Just dipping my toe into OCF. I have a Yongnuo 565EX II E-TTL. I've read up that my 60 can use the built-in popup flash to trigger the flash and i have used this function. I'm interested in buying a softbox for my speedlight. I have been on a lighting course which was in a studio environment etc but would like to get familiar and out and about with my new found desire to use OCF and techniques and lighting patterns learnt.

Ive done extensive reading on the subject and looked into lots of brands. As I'm only starting out with it I'm not going to invest a shed load of money in bucket loads of kit and expensive brands. I'm thinking an amazon special neewer box seems to have decent reviews and produce the soft fall off that I'm looking at achieving.

So.... my question... eventually I'm probably going to look at the new 622c triggers as they have stonking reviews but for now does anyone have experience of using a small softbox 24x24 and the built-in pop up trigger as a fill and or trigger?

BTW go nuts, I'm not offended easily, and end of the day I want to learn

cheers
Nathan

Hello Nathan, just like yourself, I have dipped my toes into off camera flash and my first softbox was this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004XY65WQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00 and this was my first go with it and the pop=up flash acting as a trigger

I then bought the YongNuo YN-622N Wireless TTL Flash Trigger for Nikon and the controller YONGNUO YN-622N-TX i-TTL . What I didn't like about my softbox was the flash bracket that came with it. My SB-800 was a bit vulnerable at the pins where it clamped the flash so I bought the Neewer S-Type Bracket Holder with Bowens Mount http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00JAAXH1A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 as the flash is clamped by it's head and is secure but unlikely to damage any connections. I'm still in the early learning phase but the kit I have has provided me with a number of acceptable shots. I've since bought this octobox http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PIM3I6I?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00 and another S-type bracket but with mixed feelings. The Octobox mounted on my stand wont tilt forward enough for my liking and used outside it acts as a wind sail and is easily blown over but does produce decent light. I hope my experiences help you along your journey into flash photography, I'm sure those with far better experience than me will offer you sound advice as well.

As Nathan is a Canon shooter he will need to lookup the Canon equivalent YN622C-TX.

Nah, Nah................. he should buy the Nikon version and then sell all his Canon gear :D

David is, of course, quite correct and I'm pretty sure they have the same functionality so highly recommended.

Wow, thanks guys for the tips and comments,

I was looking at the godox one, they all seem very similar, I saw this one and thought the grip and the grid was a nice little extra, thoughts...

All I would need next then would be a set of triggers as planned and I'd be well away he he
That looks OK I'd be interested to see the grid, as I ended up bodging one together myself for mine

I trawled through Amazon looking for something like this and obviously missed it, I've popped it into my shopping basket.
