Yes
As a result of a very slow motion meet with another vehicle yesterday I need a new front number plate :(

[ and a parking sensor , which popped out , as well as the plastic surround for my headlamp washer ]

Clearly the crumple zone there did its job. Car goes in on Wednesday to be looked at and estimate given - they know it's an insurance job .

Problem - I don't have a spare identical front number plate at present though what I do have is a set of back and front plates :)

My garage fitted bog standard plates which fit the spaces made for them [ Freelander ]

The plates I'd like to be put on are those which were made when Euro symbol plates came out first -
on the near side they have a blue vertical panel with the Euro Symbol at the top and underneath that are the letters GB .
On the offside there is a blue panel with a euro symbol at the top, below that a Scottish Lion Rampant and below that a Saltire

These were definitely legal then and were in fact used on all our vehicles at that time [ 2 cars , trailers, trailer tent ]

Question is - are they still legal ? I'd really like to use them again. Registration is a Cherished number

Hmm - the head scratching continues with that

Left hand side is fine , it's the right hand side that's the concern

Havng seen some of the laughably (and apparently ignored by the police) illegal numberplates hairing around, I don't think you've much to worry about to be honest

That's what I was hoping , I have to admit .

I know when we got the plates with the Euro symbol originally regulations were not as well defined as they are now.

Actually I've just discovered a second pair :) but what I would really like to know is why I have eight [ yes 8 ] rear number plates !! and they are all oblong apart from the 9th which is square !!

'Cause you're Odd?
I mean, come on....it can't be ruled out

Nah - it was my husband who was odd - not me :)

Talking of number plates reminds me of a story relating to my present car.

I purchased the car from a well known local dealer. Arranged all the insurance giving them details of the new car.

Turned up at the dealer on the day and noticed something wasn't quite right. They had put new number plates on so it showed the name of the dealership on it. Trouble was in doing that they got one of the letters wrong on the number plate!!! Good thing I spotted that!

Never had that done to me - but folk are usually intrigued by my number :D

I once bought an ex-company car. The numbers on both plates were 288. It failed an HPI check as it came back as a different car with finance oustanding.

When I got the company to chech the paperwork, the actual numbers were 228. It had been driving round for over 3 years with the wrong plates....

I've still got 3 spare plates for my first Landy - one square pressed aluminium one (polished alloy characters on a black background), one square yellow/black one and one long yellow/black one. The black/ally one was a spare for the car and the other 2 were to fit the 2 trailers it was used to pull.

I quite fancy a black and ally one for the bike since it would suit it better than the yellow one but it's a 2010 bike so would be illegal. :( Might have to see how much the fine is - could be worth it!

See - it's not just me that has spare plates !

Mine aren't even for a vehicle I still own (I disposed of it 10 years ago!)

I do have a spare plate for the Triumph - the dealer I bought it off swapped it for one that has their logo on it.

Mine all came off things we no longer owned - dunno why there are so many - possibly because I didn't know where they were or I'd have put them on the car before this.

I've seen plenty of people complaining about being fined for incorrectly spaced plates / wrong font / etc. so the police must not ignore them all.

Hopefully the government willl introduce points for it as well in future.

From what I understand, the old plates are not legal.
It's apparently an MOT fail item as well, although the number of plates I see around that are not legal on vehicles that are over the MOT age, I wonder how seriously it's taken. Then again, its a simple job to swap them over for proper ones.

With so few police about these days, it's no wonder that people aren't getting done. Can't remember last time I saw a police car in front or behind me.

People just swap the plates for legal ones before they take the vehicle in for an MOT.

Thanks Bernie - I think I'll get them to put on one of the front plates and cover over the right hand side which should do till they are ready to do the whole job once they have any bits needed .

Did once go to pick up a brand new car from a main dealer, and when they pulled the cover off as they like to do, the plates were wrong! Embarrassment for them all round!

Bernie only worry when they are behind you, if the blue lights are on and they are in front worry if you are not the official backup!

As far as I'm aware it's perfectly legal to have plates that were once legal on the car, but you cannot legally purchase them any more, so you can only legally purchase a current 'style'. There are plenty of places where you can get custom made plates to any specification.

Saw one on Saturday, hurtling towards the roundabout I was on and flying across my nose. Thank the pantheon for ABS.

Though I have 2 pairs of the plates I'd like to use both are of the so-to-speak long rectangular variety and of course being a 4x4 the space on the back is a large almost square space :( AND they also have the identifiers on the right hand side as well as the left hand.

I've a feeling that I'm out of luck :(

Back from Body Shop inspection - car now road legal :) One of my number plates is now on the front and they are happy to put the matching one on the back even though it's a different shape
