Nothing like a good smoke!:)

It would bankrupt government ;)

Hardly. Yes, the excise and VAT duty raised from the sale of cigarettes covers the cost of treating smoking related illnesses to the NHS. What it doesn't cover are all the other implications of smoking to the economy.

"Whilst tax on tobacco contributes £10 billion annually to the Treasury coffers, the true costs to society from smoking are far higher, at £13.74 billion, think thank Policy Exchange’s latest report finds. This cost is made up of the cost of treating smokers on the NHS (£2.7 billion) but also the loss in productivity from smoking breaks (£2.9 billion) and increased absenteeism (£2.5 billion); the cost of cleaning up cigarette butts (£342 million); the cost of fires (£507 million), and also the loss in economic output from the deaths of smokers (£4.1 billion) and passive smokers (£713 million)."

Well I wouldn't outwardly show any disgust towards their laws, culture and smoking habits, regardless of what I actually thought, so I don't suppose I would be told to go **** myself. It's a little something I have called respect. With a post like that perhaps it's something for you to look into? ;)

Yes, it was a bit harsh and unnecessary. Sorry about that!

packed in after 26 years..first few months were hard, not smoked now for about 8 years, not bothered by it now....my gran smoked from 13 years of age till 82, laughed at the doctor when told to quit, she smoked everthing that she could get..
her usual was woodbines & capstan full strength, rollups before she died, of a non smoking illness ...I think she would have smoked cardboard, if you give it to her....mark

this is naivety in its most prolific form!

No, I just don't believe we are told the truth, by the Government or NHS when its comes to anything smoking related. Over exaggerated propaganda.
Just my opinion of course.

I keep trying to give up, I have an electric cigarette but moderating this place drives me to harmful smoke and alcohol

So I am just off outside to have a fag and then pour myself a nice glass of wine.

I'm at week 12 fag free and feel great but loved smoking. What made me quit was when all the technicians at the garage i work at were taking the P out of a car that was being serviced that absoluely stank of fags and i though "does my car smell like that?". From then on i just stopped and the smell of co-workers that smoke totally churns my stomach. Very hypocritical i know but thats just how i feel.

I think patches etc are just prolonging the pain. I wanted to stop for years but when its time you just know. Do it for the your own reasons not because the wife/kids/employer etc wants you to.

well done....I don't think that the caving will ever go away, after 8 years of quitting ,I still get the pang now & again ...but would never smoke again...
not with the price of tobacco these days anyhow ....

my mum smoked all her life, now she is so unhealthy she cant even walk to the park with my kids and her activities with them are massively reduced because of it. Just know that your choices now will affect your families life in the future.

I think I should join in on this thread!
I'm a smoker, and I really enjoy it. Bonkers I know, but I do.

I've *tried* everything to give up. You name it.
I've even helped others to give up, with success! But cannot do it myself.
The even stupider thing is, I know why I can't quit.

I put * next to tried because if you try to quit, you'll fail. I've only ever tried to quit. You have to tell yourself, 100% that are GOING to stop.
This is what Allan Carr said in his awesome book, The Easy Way To Stop Smoking.

That and fear. And I'm guilty of them both! I'm terrified of the thought of never having another fag. And that also stops me from stopping.

:'(

Thats the thing I've always had the fear of not smoking again. I tried the Allan Carr method but I just didn't commit 100%.

Also in my current location fags cost under $1 for a pack of twenty so I'm smoking more for sure.

When we get back to the UK in a few months time I think the shock of the prices is going to hit hard and that alone will be major in a plan toward giving up.

I smoke a pipe and my favourite baccy is Columbian Coffee, I know it's a bad habit ...

I had my last cig some 14 years ago, used the gum for a month and that was it.
Started smoking at 17 then smoked 30 a day for 10 years or so, used to have three beofre I left for work in the mornings.

I do not miss it, I found it easy to give up but I channeled the money into a new house that I saved, me and the mrs where spending nearly £200 a month on cigs when they where just under £3 a pack of 20, my mortgage was only another £100 a month so was a good move.

To give up you need to want to give up or it will not happen. its not easy for some and some just like it so much they will smoke come what may, their choice.

My Father smoked a pipe when I was growing up and I've always loved the smell of pipe tobacco, it's fantastic.

It's a shame smoking a pipe has gone out of fashion, I hope there's a revival. Keep up the good work!

I smoke a pipe and have lots of favourite tobaccos from pungent, Latakia-heavy English mixes to coffee or coconut or whisky flavoured, scented aromatics. My current favourite cheap[ish] tobacco is MacBaren 7 Seas Regular which is strongly chocolate scented.

I think it's quite a good habit! ;) After all, as Aldous Huxley said "drug taking is debilitating! Do you want a short life but a good one?" :p

 I smoke my pipe most when I’m walking the dogs and rather sweetly a couple of weeks ago, a little boy saw me and said to his father sotto voce, “Look! An old fashioned smoker!”

I stopped a couple of years ago, still don't know why.

Got up, decided I couldn't be bothered smoking, went for patches and put one on but it caused a skin reaction so that was it. Just didn't smoke again. I could though, easily :)

I was smoking my pipe outside a Restaurant a few months back, a few of the people said it smelled lovely, while ciggy smoke put a few off. My friends who smoke, do tend to get shouted, while I smoking a pipe seem to get away with it :naughty:

If you're up in the North West, are you a Duckworth's of Colwyn Bay customer? One of my favourite shops! ;)

LoL If i was a mod i'd want a bottle of scotch and a oz of wacky backy

I quit a couple of months ago but only used to smoke when out having a few beers anyway.

… Now counting down the days until "having a beer" will result is the same dirty looks and cries of "think of the CHILDREN!" as having a smoke. Then what'll we have left? Capuccinos and cupcakes? :(

We can't possibly persuade you to start smoking again! That would just be too, too naughty! :naughty: :bat:

That's 30 mins away from me in the car. Bloody tempting!

But if you do want to disgust joescrivens and offend onona and upset others here, Duckworth's would be a great place to start!

It's an odd shop. It's an old fashioned newsagents and sweet shop but the back half of the shop is taken up by gentlemen's razors and smoking paraphernalia; cigars and lighters and ashtrays and lots of pipes and all sorts of jars of scented tobaccos: the mango and coffee and rum and chocolate flavours we've been talking about!

They'll be very helpful. They'll advise and let you sniff all the flavours. Chris Duckworth is a nice guy, as are all the ladies who work in the shop, at least one of whom is presumably Mrs Chris Duckworth! :D

By the way, “think of the children” comes straight from Mein Kampf! It was Hitler who was politically astute enough to explain that if you spoke about things being for the good of the poor, little children, people could be persuaded only too easily to give up all sorts of their civil liberties!

Colwyn Bay just a little out of my area, I use Turmeas Tobacconist Fenwick Street Liverpool City Centre. It is in the business section of the city Centre, really nice place and the staff are really polite. http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/document.php?id=turmeaustobacconist.htm

I love going into this shop, they have a really good selection of Cigars Baccy Pipes and all manner of things for the smoker. I love browsing this shop just as much as Jessops

I don't need to "persuade" anyone. I don't know any of you from Adam. Its more an observation of such a shame it is for my kids that they have a better relationship with the grandparents who dont smoke due to the fact they are healthier and can do more. Of course it's not just down to smoking, she has many other health implications from being overweight etc. but smoking is one of the factors, she also shouldn't eat as much crap.

Just shot yourself in the foot Joe.

Funny how you didn't mention overweight and other health issues in your earlier posts, but highlighted smokering! Why?

Yeah, he's really shot himself in the foot there. Suddenly smoking isn't detrimental to your health and quality of life because there are other health complications involved which may or may not be related to the smoking.

He probably highlighted smoking because it's the country's biggest killer. (Link)

Ouch my foot!!!! :suspect:

I highlighted "smokering" as you call it because that's what this thread is about. Yes she has other health issues, just expanding and putting out the bigger picture - im not naive enough to think that smoking is her only issue. But it's a major factor.

Ironically I also think her smoking is one of the reasons I have a better relationship with my dad. Growing up I didn't like being near her because she stank. So I probably spent less time with her than I did with my dad.

It's surprising how many knock on negative effects smoking causes.

Well I've never heard that one before:cuckoo: Pinning that one on smoking is just stretching it a little thin imo. Drinking certainly can have a profound effect on a family but, smoking.

Not disputing alcoholism can have a profound negative effect on the family. But of course smoking can. I have very vivid memories of sitting in my mums audi going to tesco's every weekend and holding my breath as much as I could when she lit up her cancer stick. I'd do as few breaths as I could and when I did breathe it would be through my mouth holding my nose. Anywhere we went i'd always sit as far away from my mum as possible because i hated the smell so much, so would always end up doing stuff more with my dad than her - more time spent with one parent over another means a stronger bond developing over the years. Seems pretty simple to me.

As I said, no mention of your mum being overweight or other health issues.

But hey, lets blame it all on smoking.

I mentioned it in post 108 where I elaborated.

am I not allowed to elaborate?

NEWS FLASH!!!!

Everyone, make sure that if you want to say anything, you put everything in the first post on a thread, don't elaborate further in the thread at any point or The Greek will be after you :bonk::bonk::bonk:

Joe, you reply to this was to post a link to " I'm I Paranoid"

Think you have strengthen my argument, by conveniently forgetting to mention other issues why your mum can't take your kids out for the day.

Oh, your Ale breath doesn't smell to good to a non drinker. Think of the children Lolll

Oh dear, you don't seem to be able to let this one go do you. Let me explain. In a thread you have conversations. Those conversations evolve and move forward. In my first post I made a point that because of my mums smoking she cannot do lots of things with my children. This is fact, after a few more discussions I also said that it wasn't just her smoking that is the reason for this. What exactly is your issue with that? My point still stands, she can't do a lot of things with my children because she has smoked 40 fags a day for the last 40 years. Am I saying that's the only reason? No, I'm saying thats one of the reasons.

I'm actually explaining that I do understand that it isn't JUST the smoking that has caused that.

So, what exactly is your point?

Oh, your Ale breath doesn't smell to good to a non drinker. Think of the children Lolll

My children are asleep in bed when I drink ale. So this sentence is irrelevant.

So your point is you think I am paranoid maybe  My score was 11 Joe, am I normal?

Meh that's Crap ! I got the full 50
