Hi all,
I signed up last night and I am rank amateur. I've owned a Canon 450D since the end of August.
I am a keen enthusiast though and I have managed to take about 6000 photos so far. 6 of which I'm probably happy with. Anyway that's just a pre cursor to my question.

I was offered to assist a free shoot a friend was doing at a local battle of the bands gig. Sadly she's had to now pull out but offered to lend me her flash and let me shoot it solo.
Honestly, I don't want to but I think I should.
If I go, it is tonight so basically I just wanted any advice you may have to give.
I don't want to be shooting full Auto as I'm used to the manual settings but I fear that without appropriate lighting, I will be forced to shoot blurry long exposures or use a ridiculously high ISO.

Appreciate any advice.

Lighting is basic and dull at best. Possibly some coloured overhead spots may be in use. My lenses are stock 18-55mm and an additional 28-80mm
I do have access to a flash but I'm unsure what kind yet and I do have a tripod but I doubt it will be of much use in this scenario.

I'm also still learning so can't give you advice like the others can on here but with regards to doing it, go for it, you have nothing to lose and could potentially come away with another 6 good shots to add to what you have!

welcome to tp!

post some pics up.... people are happy folk on here and are happy to help!

If you are doing it for free and just for personal experience and nobody is expecting any photos then go ahead,if you make a complete a*se of it then it does not matter.
If you are expected to produce 'professional' shots then don't touch it with a bargepole.
IF you decide to do it and you have a canon flash with ETTL then put the camera to manual ,set the shutter to below the sync speed, say 1/160,aperture to f6.3(ish) ISO to about 400.
Put the flash to ETTL ,ignore the in camera meter,(it will show underexposed) and shoot away, adjust the flash exposure compensation on the flash and ISO as needed, the histogram is your friend here.
Take lots of spare flash batteries!
That way the flash is acting as the main light not as a fill light.

Best of Luck

Can you not borrow her kit (assuming she has faster lenses and better performing camera at high ISO)

Thanks all.
Turns out my friend couldn't make it due to some personal issues so I acted as emotional support for her and blew off the shoot.
The gig seemed like it would have been fun though.
I have never shot any live music. I even had a few ideas planned although I don't know how they may have worked. However that's a whole new question right there.
Either way, I appreciate your response everyone.

@Tezmed - What pictures would you like me to post? Some of my own, if so, what?
@Troutfisher - Can I ask where about in W Yorks you're from. I'm in Keighley (Outskirts of Bradford)
@Brucemo - In light of the circumstances I honestly don't think it entered her head, but like her, my friend also has a 7D which I could have borrowed. I simply wanted to do the best with what I had myself.
@markmullen - Cheers Mark. I'll remember that. I often use my tripod wherever possible in poor light, but I have opted for a high ISO in certain situations.

I'd gladly post some of my work on here. As I say though, I don't think the pictures I take are of significantly good quality but you're welcome to critique them as bluntly as you like and hopefully give me some pointers

Yayyy to all the west yorkshire people in the house, I'm from Bradford, shame you couldnt do the gig, the 450D ISO 1600 (max) cleans up pretty nice with a small bit of PP though a 1.8 prime or 2.8 zoom would help a lot.
Slightly off topic but who's going to be at the xmas lights switching on tonight in bfd city centre, hoping to get some bokehlicious/slider shots

Pity it did not work out as it might have been fun and experience but there will be other opportunities.
I,m in Mirfield,just outside Dewsbury

Cheers

Well thanks again all.

I'll link up some pics in a post for you all to vet.

I won't be in Brad tonight. I'm off to grab some shots of Leeds German Market and grab a few shots of the non photography kind too i hope. Warm honey mead yummy...

I shot some bands using a canon 450d and kit lens... worked great although you have to be creative and use a slow shutter speed to let enough light in, and then try shoot shots where the slow shutter speed will be ok... so wait for the moment they stop moving and shoot then, or do close ups of the guitar and the hand playing it blurred due to teh movement.

I wouldn't use a flash as the band will no doubt get very annoyed by this and wrap a fender around your head :D
