So, I think we all come across this from time to time. And yesterday I had mine. Not from a security guard, or a police officer, or a bouncer... but from a canoeist! Seriously, I was walking from Camden to Regents park on Saturday, via "Little Venice". Lovely canal, gorgeous light and blue sky on the day, snapping away happily I was. These 3 canoeists were paddling up the water, 2 somewhat coaching a beginner, and I thought, wicked shot. So I positioned myself and composed a nice shot of the canal, 3 of them in the foreground, when the "main" bloke shouts at me "EXCUSE ME, NO PHOTOGRAPHS"! So I replied something like "I'll wait for you to get out of the shot so". Then he shouts "WELL STOP POINTING THE CAMERA AT US". I kept it up, and when they passed just replied, "It's not pointing at you now then is it" and took the shot without them. I'm just too bloody polite . What do I wish I did? Slapped on my 200mm and walked up the river pointing it in his face, just to annoy the git!

So I kind of left the scene somewhere between a chuckle, because he still looked annoyed, and a little annoyed at myself for not being braver and sticking the camera in his face and annoy him more! I was also annoyed that I didn't remember all those lines we discussed when talking about things like this before.

And yeah, I know this has been somewhat discussed to the death. But I'm determined to raise my post count to 1,528... wohoo! success!

pmsl mate, you should have took a picture anyway and posted it on here !!!! (one of him shaking his fist would have been ideal!)

:)

I would have told him that he isnt entitled to privacy in a public place, not yet anyway.:eek:

some just dont like being on the other side of the lens....respect that

I do. That's why I didn't take the photograph.

It's funny though, I'd much rather not care, because quite frankly he didn't at all respect being polite in a public place, so why should I have respected his dislike of being on the other side of the lens. Suppose i can revel in the fact that I'm somewhat a more polite person than he!

Maybe he was trying to fake his own death for the insurance like that other canoeist a while back ;) You have more restraint than me though, I'd have stuck the 300 L on and snapped away and then chimped while laughing maniacally.

I must be psychic but I already know where this thread ends up... and frankly I'm fed up with it.....So for the last time.... Public place = The right to take as many pictures as you like. YES even if some "Canoeist" ( why does that sound like an insult?) says I can't. Anyone who bows down to idiots deserves to be ruled by them.

 aye, actually maybe it was gordon ramsey, he did have an ugly mug on him!

What was he going to do if you refused anyway, splash you to death?

Damn it! I deserve to be ruled by idiots!

I was a bit more afraid of his oar round me lug!

Ah no, I suppose I'm a bigger idiot for bowing to his request. I'm going to have to grow a bigger pair of balls

"I try not to photograph ignorant barstewards. Thanks for letting me know"

Or maybe:

"It's ok mr canoeist. I just couldn't bring myself to photograph a face that ugly anyway"

You're not an idiot. Someone was not comfortable with you taking photos of them and you were courteous.

The more people apply the 'it's the law, I can do what I want' the more likely restrictions will come in the future IMHO.

Plenty if things you can do legally that can make people uncomfortable, doesn't make it right.

So? some people don't like to have their picture taken! I would respect that and have let them be

It wasn't me, i would of stopped and made you a brew!

Yeah, I agree and in another way I'm not sure I suppose. I agree that you know what, I was courteous enough to not photograph them! But was he really shouting at me because he didn't like his photo taken? Or was he just being an little "over" alpha male about it and just trying to stamp down his authority? To be honest, he didn't come across as someone who was camera shy. He just came across as rude, and a little bit crass.

Tis ok, was just a rant :). I did respect them and let them pass without taking their photo. At the end of the day I can just move on to somebody who doesn't mind, which is exactly what I did

If it was me I'd have waited till they paddled within earshot of your mirror slap and then put it into burst mode and snap away :)

I don't get why people are so uptight about their photo being taken... if it was me I'd have posed!

HAHA! 8 FPS might have frightened the crap out of them, the D300 sounds like a bloody machine gun in action!

Great post. Some poeple worry too much!

Cheers! Agreed, some people need to loosen up. (and welcome to TP ;))

:agree:
Would have made for an interesting set as he beat you around the head with his oar.

It is irritating that some members of the public start spouting made up laws at you, but generally I'd rather not take photos of people that didn't want their photo taken. I did find 5 traffic wardens sitting on a bench that I thought would make a nice shot, and one of them started swearing at me and telling me I wasn't allowed to take photos. Yes we do have a right to take photos, but I feel people should also have the right to be in public and not made to feel uncomfortable.

I guess the rumours of weapons being hidden inside the camera is indeed true. Now I know why everyones so touchy!

So simple: Ask.

I agree. I think it was the way he said it that kind of made me chuckle and slightly annoy me at the same time. It wasn't so much a "I don't like my photo taken", but more of a "I just want to tell you not to take my photograph because I'm a person of authority" i.e. a bit rude. I didn't let it bother me though! As I said to the girlfriend afterwards: 'can't wait to tell this on TP, I finally have my "you no take photo" story!'

Yep indeed he does not seem overly polite, when someone is rude it does make it harder to try to be polite back. I still think you made the correct choice but as soon as someone is disrespectful to you they lose their right to expect it back.

 completely agree

i think i'm in the minority here, but if a member of the public says to me that they dont want their photo taken then i'd respect their wishes.. maybe he wasnt polite about it I dont know, but seems little point causing a scene.. life's too short.

Funny thing is, he never said he didn't want his photograph taken. He just told me no photographs. To be frank, he pretty much had already caused a scene. I just chose to quench the flame pretty quick and not allow it to escalate. If he phrased it "Would you mind not photographing me" or "I'd prefer if you didn't take our photograph" this thread probably wouldn't exist. I suppose it was the manner in which he said it

Anyway, no sleep lost. I don't think it's a big issue, I just quite enjoyed having a rant about it!

"is that a canoe in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me..."

But what if the people on the river were Taliban naval commandos in training, that photo could have been vital evidence. The fact that they didn't want their photo taking just proves that they were up to no good...

Either they were Taliban or lying to someone about their location (wife/boss) :D

Nothing to hide, nothing to fear ;-)

Can't believe nobody has compared him to Hitler yet, because the similarities are uncanny. Godwin must have been talking rubbish... oh crap, wait a sec
