Its a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-35mm F3.5-4.5G ED created specifically for FX users and to be priced arount the £650 mark.... also a 800mm F5.6E FL ED VR but thats another story and about £15000

Saw this earlier today. Very interested in this!

AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Primary Features

An 18-35mm zoom lens that covers the ultra-wide to standard wide-angle range of focal lengths with approximately 1.9x magnification, supports maximum apertures of f/3.5-4.5, and offers compatibility with the FX format
A compact design that weighs just 385 g makes the lens small and light enough to take anywhere
A new optical design with superior resolution that makes the most of digital-SLR cameras with extremely high pixel counts, such as the D600
Constructed with two ED and three aspherical lens elements for superior aberration compensation
Superior rendering performance at all focusing distances, from minimum 28 cm to infinity
Equipped with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for extremely quiet autofocusing
Equipped with two focus modes—autofocus with manual override (M/A) and manual focus (M)
A 7-blade rounded aperture for beautiful blur characteristics

AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR primary features:

An FX-format compatible AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR with the longest focal length in the history of NIKKOR autofocus lenses.
Constructed of two fluorite lens elements. The lens is equipped with two fluorite lens elements used in IC steppers and scanners that require extreme precision. The superior transmissivity from the infrared to ultra-violet range demonstrates superior chromatic aberration compensation throughout the visible range.
Equipped with two ED lens elements for sharp rendering and superior optical performance.
Nano Crystal Coat effectively prevents the internal reflections that cause ghost and flare.
When the teleconverter is used with this super-telephoto lens, the electromagnetic aperture built into the lens enables stable exposure control with high-speed continuous shooting.
Equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) mechanism offering performance equal to an increase in shutter speed of approximately 4.0 steps*.
A lightweight yet durable super-telephoto lens with the adoption of fluorite lens elements, which helps to reduce the weight of the lens significantly, and a magnesium alloy, which ensures strength and durability.

AF-S TELECONVERTER TC800-1.25E ED primary features

Designed exclusively for use with the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR. This teleconverter has been designed to produce images exhibiting the same rendering performance as the primary lens.
When used with the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR, focal length is increased by 1.25x for a focal length of 1000 mm (combined maximum aperture of f/7.1).
The first teleconverter equipped with an ED lens element.

This announcement makes me feel better about purchasing a 24-70, at least I know a new version aint about to come out :)

So I just chose the d800 over the d600, I have 24-70... That was easy, but now another choice.... 16-35 f4 with vr or now 18-35 without vr but a few hundred cheaper? Why have they bought this out?

That new 18-35mm is half the weight of the 16-35mm, plus it's shorter, which could matter a lot to some people, especially those using a small form camera like a D600.. and it's a G-lens, and AF-S so should be compatible with all the Nikon DSLRs. Instant manual override is featured also unlike on the previous version.

The old one never set the world on fire but this new one could be much better - I'm sure the tests will tell us yes or no.

Exactly that. I don't really see a need for VR at wide angle lengths, unless you plan to shoot hand held at 1/40 or slower a lot. It being lighter is the next best reason behind it. Sure you gain 2mm on the old 16-35, but if that's a big issue, then maybe you should look to the 14-24.

Makes the canon 800f5.6 seem a bit of a bargain :)
Rob.

Would love to know who the new 800 is aimed at? You would want to be making a killing to splash that much on a lens.

there was a rumour that Canon was working on a EF 800 f/5.6L IS II.
Given their recent price increases on new design lenses how much do you think that would list at? ...

big agencies presumably. Sometimes getting a very distant and blurry shot of something special can pay for it and more in one go

Amazon UK have it in stock right now. The price has been reduced recently too, it's at £862.99 atm.

You'd want a decent gym membership as well! I bet people will buy it though. Someone always wants the ultimate.

If the 18-35 is anything like the old 18-35 (but with the horrendous distortion sorted), it should be a nice little lens. Agree that it will only make sense if it sits comfortably lower in price than the 16-35 Vr though. Maybe £450 shortly after launch.

Hopefully now Nikon can concentrate on filling UK stock of the 16-35 f4 again instead of making a pointless 18-35...
If the 18-35 is pointless because there's a faster and wider 16-35, then the 16-35 is equally pointless when there's an even faster and wider 14-24? :p

The 18-35 fills a niche for people who want a smaller, lighter, cheaper option. It's far from pointless to them.

No they dont, read the small print
In stock but may require up to 2 additional days to deliver.
They said exactly the same thing when i was looking for one but they dont have physical stock, they just have a promise from Nikon UK that they can get it for them within 2 days (whcih wont happen) or they have a returned lens in the system which means they will send you a used/return lens

They did this to me when i was getting one, i got a customer return as when i tried to register it with Nikon they said, "sorry sir but that lens was registered with us last week by someone else" Needless to say Amazon got a *******ing and i sent it back.

But the VR is the main selling point of the 16-35 so its not really pointless now is it.

Actually, the new 18-35 is faster than the 16-35 at 18mm ;)

On the 16-35, 2 extra days to deliver wouldn't be so bad, if they actually fulfilled that promise. But, I have found similar only this week. Ordered a sigma 150mm from microglobe, who stated they had it in stock, but after placing the order they mail me to say it'll be a few weeks. Cancelled there and got it on WEX, hopefully they don't turn around and do same.

The VR ain't a selling point to me. It's still bigger and heavier.

Am I on another planet?
Who is going to pay £15,600 for a lens?

If this new 18-35 has been optimised for the new high mpx count sensors of the D600/800 (which I presume it has been) then I could be interested for landscaping, always on a tripod stopped down then I don't need the constant f/4 or the VR....

Hmmm! I literally cannot make up my mind as to what to do the with various options now for a wide lens for landscaping on full frame...

That's the thing, if your main reason for buying a wide angle lens is for landscape, you don't need a 2.8 or even f/4. It will be more important how they perform across the frame.

Quite. I know the existing 18-35 is weak on 12mpx sensors, so if the new one is better then I'm all up for it! Provided it's at a competitive price which probably means waiting a couple of months.

Bird photographers will buy it. Focal length is king in this sphere. Arguments abound as to whether 600f4 + converters is better - certainly more flexible, yes - but 800mm is as good as it gets for bird photography. The biggest downside by far is travelling with it. Mind you same size as 600mm in Canon range at least. 800 for home, 500 for away perhaps?
