Nikon Z* mirrorless

I took delivery of one, purchased from Park Cameras, last week and used it on my Z50 at a family wedding last Saturday. I also done some test shots on my Z5.

Very impressed with the results on both cameras. Sharpest lens I've ever owned.

Shallow depth of field at f2 caught me out a couple of times at the wedding.

Thanks, that’s great to know! Unfortunately my dithering has meant than the official Nikon store is now out of stock, so I’ll be waiting a few more weeks anyway by the looks of it!

Think I need to get a 14-30 before my 2 weeks in Scotland next spring (have the 24-200 and 500PF) just need UWA to complete the kit

Adam, I've just put a nearly new UK 14-30 with nearly five years warranty left up for sale in the Nikon ads section for less than most are asking for a well used grey market lens. Might help you out.

Might be worth checking the warrenty sheet in the box mate, that looks like an import ( German warranty sticker being the giveaway ) and Amazon always do that.

Thank you but timing not good for me right it now either as wife’s signed off sick and on SSP

Regardless, the lens is from Amazon UK, bought in the UK, so it will be classed as UK for warranty purposes.

Sadly not. You only get the Nikon warranty if it’s a Nikon UK supplied lens. This looks like a lens from Germany so Nikon UK will likely refuse to touch it. Amazon always do this and you most often get grey imports through Amazon unfortunately.

I will check with Amazon and Nikon and report back.

OK, I've just got off the phone with Nikon UK. They've looked at the serial number and have deemed it NOT to be classed as a grey import. It is therefore treated as a UK lens, with full UK warranty and should anything require repair it would be sent to Nikon UK and repaired under warranty. That's straight from the horse's mouth.

This has come up before and to be fair if there was an issue with something and Nikon kicked back Amazon would sort it out under their superb after sales care, I have had them refund me for items close to 2 years old that he manufacturer was not helping with.

I bought my 14-30 from the Nikon store on Amazon a few months ago.

I’d be pretty p***ed if I had an issue with it and Nikon UK didn’t cover it.

As long as the warranty lists it as being imported into Nikon in the Netherlands, it will be covered by Nikon UK, as that's where Nikon UK get there stock from, as do most of Nikons distributors in Europe

That's a bit of luck. I had a 35mm that had a fault bought through amazon uk in the same way and Nikon refused to touch it as it was a French market box not UK. Had to fight with Amazon to get it resolved which took weeks so that's why I raised it.

An airborne photo of Ajka :) not the best of angles for the type of photo, but as usual it was a spur of the moment thing...

Interesting regarding warranty, once upon a time Nikon’s lenses were worldwide warranty, when did it change?

24-120 is a very useful zoom range. I had one of the F mount versions with my D750.
It wasn't perfect though.
I hope this one is lighter, it should be better.

Z9, 24-120mm and 100-400mm officially announced. Z9 looks impressive, some bold claims.

100-400 Z S priced at £2699 which ain`t that bad and IMO much cheaper than I thought it would be.
Now, do I order one.......

Nikon has added 26mm, 800mm, DX12-28mm and DX24mm to the Z mount lens roadmap….

I’m sure that 800mm will be cheap and easy to get hold of!!

24-120 is a bit of a surprise.
I used the last version a lot on my D750.
I was expecting £2.5k for the 100-400.

Hope the 24-120 is as good as the 24-70 f4s. I’ll be in line for one if it is.
I would say it will be as good or better (if you can get better)

I am halfway through jared polin's video on the z9, one thing he did say re the z6 ii and z7 ii is that he thinks the focus issues are hardware rather than firmware related and as such there won't be a firmware update that brings them more up to speed. Personally i disagree with him to a point, i don't think they will be brought up to the same level as canon and sony, but i do think they can be significantly improved through firmware. I don't see it being right away post z9 release though as that would cannibalise sales of the z9 for existing z users who may be looking at it as an upgrade path.

That being said, oh my the z9 looks one hell of a bit of kit

I really want the Z9.....don't need it but really want it. Do really like the look of the 24-120 also. Think I'll hold off on the 100-400 and see if there's any movement next year on the 200-600 as that's the lens I really want to round off my kit.

Just watched a Youtube video on the Z9 by Matt Granger (used to be "That Nikon Guy"), like most he had the Z9 for 3 days of testing and shot over 23,000 images in the 3 days along with some 4k video. Even more amazing he said it was on one battery charge and it even had 30% left at the end !!

Now I know when you shoot burst modes you can double or triple (or even more) what you can get in single shot mode, but 23,000 that's incredible !

It will be interesting to see how good the IBIS alone is with the 24-120 @ 120mm - I can't see anywhere that this lens has VR.

DP Review:

“Employs an optical vibration reduction function with an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 5.5 stops faster, which is the highest among NIKKOR Z lenses”

far more expensive and also heavier than I'd expected but then I did some research which suggested my original guesstimate was way out. Anyway, it's completely out of the question for me as for less than a quarter of the price, you can get a 70-300 AF-P. For 1/8 of the price you can get a superb second hand 80-200 f2.8, albeit MF on the Z. I did both! The difference between 300m and 400m is not that significant. Of course I'd ideally like a native telephoto but if Nikon won't provide one for mere mortals, I'll stick with what I have unless I get into something which needs really fast AF (which means the next generation Z6 using some trickle down technology from the mighty 9)

The 100-400mm is a similar weight and price to the Sony 100-400mm GM so I think they've probably priced it against that. The Sony GM is an exceptional lens though so if NIkon can match or better that it will be a belter (y)

the 24-120 is a surprise even to the rumour guys. Looks like it is classed as a kit lens which means it may well come cheap with the Z6/7 mark iii. It might not be an easy decision as to whether the extra size and weight as well as possibly slight IQ reduction compared to the 24-70 will be worth it. Depends largely on whether I will do a lot of single lens walking around -- mostly I use a bag where there is normally a telephoto anyway.
