Nikon mirrorless definitely on the way

Mmm so apparently according to the most recent rumours the yet to be launched battery grip for these will have not just 1 but 2 sd card slots :D
 I saw some of them this morning on NR, people trying to figure out a way to justify/get around the one card slot design. 'They couldn't have done that, they must be doing this to get a round it'.

Whatever convoluted system they can come up with is based on a premise that the contacts in the battery compartment can somehow be made to pass data at high speed through the system. :ROFLMAO: As soon as I read them I thought they were grasping at imaginary straws.

And apart from that, the battery grip will struggle to get two batteries in and stay a reasonable size. The grip for the D500, and D300S, contain one battery in addition to the one in the body, because there are no external connections on these camera, the battery compartment needs to be taken up with the connections. I saw a grip on a stand in the back of one of the coverage videos and it was huge, though it did say 'Reference'.

By coming up with the second card slot in the grip hypothesis they’re basically admitting that Nikon have screwed up ;)

Here's a pic of a grip from the background of a Kai W video from a launch event. Hopefully this is just a reference model and for Z6 / Z7 users and it is a bit smaller and better designed. ;) That looks very rectangular. Just noticing as I put the pic up where the screw wheel is, and I don't think there is a whole with a thread to screw into. I guess that is why it is a reference. ;)

Looks like a 3D print or SLA proto, not a "grained" injection moulded production part.

There could be a gear mechanism between the wheel and screw. Maybe due to the proximity of the large lens mount to the tripod thread.

The tightening wheels are normally offset a little, but that seems a bit extreme. It is a mock up though. I'm not quite sure why there isn't a bit more 'design' in it. Even if they just scanned a D500 grip and then shrunk it and 3D printed it to fit. This looks like the battery 'brick' grips that you used to be able to buy for the entry Canon DSLR's.

I wake up in a cold sweat.

That sentence haunted me all night, drifting in and out from my dreams. Nocturnal ruminations on the nature of unassisted flight and fancy were frequently interrupted by a whispered notion, a hushed muttering echoing through the canals of my mind:

"It's a single card slot."

I steady my shaking hands. I fumble towards the bathroom and splash cold water on my face. Bags had developed under my eyes, which were cracked red like a stained-glass window. I have to go to work, but all the weight had shifted from my body up to my shoulders. My bones are hollow; the sensation of ants crawling through them are unceasing.

"It's a single card slot."

Thunder rumbles. Winds howl. A storm rages, even though the weather outside is perfectly clear. I fall to my knees. "It's a single card slot," I whisper. As the screams of the storm rises to a deafening crescendo I raise my voice to yell above the ceaseless pounding in my ears. "It's a single card slot! It's a damn single card slot! You animals! It's 2018! Damn you! God damn you all to hell!"

The storm crashes down on my body. I lay there, on the floor, twitching, drooling.

Once again I wake. My memory is hazy, save for a single phrase unraveling through the scorched remains of my conscious:

It's a single card slot...

LOL :D
Wonder how long it will be till we see one of the hitler rant videos about one card slot

If you're designing a camera from the ground up you shouldn't have to leave out any function - you just create the space for a backup SD card, or put in two SD UHSII card slots instead. The very fact that there are so many pages on it show how much of a problem it is for many.

I liked Ross Harvey's thoughts on the camera but even he, a Nikon ambassador, is disappointed about the card thing. I note that most pros that Nikon has as ambassadors are talking about incorporating it into their system rather than switching. That speaks a lot to card anxiety and maybe also battery anxiety. Remember, it's not just card failures, but card losses and/or physical damage. Like Ross, when I shoot destination weddings, I like to split the cards up so one set are on me, one set are in the cameras in my bag. I've even dropped an SD card into a cup of tea when backing up cards one morning.
1 for the pot?:D

The more pics I see the uglier it gets. I know looks aren’t everything, and guess that’s why the wife hasn’t left me yet.

Looks like it hit every branch on the way down!

I actually think these mirrorless cameras and the dumb decisions they made when designing it show that Nikon is so far out of touch that it's actually funny

No eye AF, the single biggest thing I love about Sony. They decide to exclude it

Single cards as has been beat over the head for pages and pages here is just totally mental. It also ain't gonna happen in the grip as the slot needs to be attached to the cameras motherboard

Blackout also looks totally stinking between shots going by reports

This camera competes with the last gen Sony cams, not the current. They done the exact same thing trying to compete with go pro and it failed miserably by releasing a product that was at least a few generations behind. It's a sad predicament for a Nikon shooter looking a mirrorless camera

Nail on the head, Tony. If they'd released this month's after the a7ii I'd have still not have switched to it but id have thought nikon just stepped ahead in the mirrorless game. It wouldve made me excited for the next generation.

there will be firmware updates though lads, but still ... I'm thinking they flunked this one overall too

Such a lot of hate for these cameras now.

Truth be told I like the look of them, they very much look like a Nikon. Ergonomics look better than the Sony’s.

They have proper weather sealing unlike the competition. ( I had made up my mind to buy a couple of A73’s and was in the middle of ordering them this morning before realising I was going to run late for a wedding. It p***ed down most of the day and all my gear was soaked through several times not that long home and now unsure again if I want to take a risk on the Sony’s.)

All the AF-S lenses will work on them perfectly actually they will work better than before thanks to the IBIS. Excluding the Sigma Art stuff lens options for Sony seem a bit meh.

Most of the reviews I have seen have said the autofocus is very good yeah it doesn’t have the eye a.f but I have never had it before to miss.

Still can’t buy these though, one card slot. :D

What do you want? A love in? Are we not allowed be honest here? I'm far from a pro and I have issues with these new models. Just not good enough IMO. I wouldn't say no to one at a much reduced price, but for the money, there's better already available. Even the Panasonic G9 is better, bar the smaller sensor. in fact the only reason that camera isn't highly praised on here is because of the M43 sensor. In every other way it is better. If you're really interested, which i doubt, look through my posts to see why, posted how many ways it's better yesterday some time.

But why, it hasn't got a FF sensor! :exit:;)

Well, I did say ...

Off top of my head then: G9 is better built, has just as good an evf and touchscreen, it has the fully articulated LCD, it's got the top LCD, but get this! it also has DUAL SD CARD SLOTS!! It's got better 4K video and controls, it offers the full 5-axis stabilization for ANY lens that can be adapted, it has 6.5 stops of IBIS and this can further be improved by using Panasonic lenses with IS, it has eye detect and you can use the screen to shift focus with your eye to the evf ... there's more I'll think of, but yeah, truth is it gets snubbed only because it's m43. It is actually a right beast of a camera. The one I will jump to next if I fail to decide on another system by Christmas.

When I saw the Z cam images my first thought was, that looks like a G9! Only the G9 is actually better laid out [IMO]

I do love nikon ergonomics. But have to say I adore the sonys. I've shot 2 wet weddings since getting them, taking no more precautions than what I'd do with the d750 and had no bother.

I've the 35 art and it's great on sony but my favourite lenses are my 25 and 85 batis lenses. The Sony 85 and 55 are great too. The art is actually the only one I'm not truly in love with because it's too big and heavy. I'd ditch it in a heartbeat for a good 1.8 sony or zeiss.

Firstly - the ergonomics of the Nikon look so much better than the Panasonic. (Not sure how you can say it's better built?)
secondly - the still image quality from a D850 blows the Panasonic out of the water; why won't the Z series do the same?

In respect to weather sealing - maybe you have been lucky you haven't suffered issues, it has been shown to be poor on the Sony; the same argument I have for never having a memory card failure :)

I love the way you say "firstly" and then only have like 2 points, c'mon ... You need to get to specsavers mate, the G9 is a beast of a camera that could knock a burglar out in one, the Z cams look like they might need a couple precision shots :D

I don't shoot Sony so you lost me on that part

Firstly - I quoted your post

Secondly - I quoted @decigallen in relation to the Sony

Thirdly -

Fourthly - you didn't answer my secondly ;)

Fifthly - I already have 3 cameras to bash burglars with!

Just seen that video myself - hands-on with Mr & Mrs Northrup, shooting at Nikon's big New York launch event. AF tracking not up to par, also frame rate, VR and metering not as claimed. Okay, not ideal conditions, pre-production cameras blah blah, but this is really not good news. From 5:20...

O dear.

The AF sucks and the image stabilization is only half as good as Sony.

What's the point in that larger mount then?

Can't stomach that couple normally, but kudos to them for being honest, everyone expects them to drool over anything new. Apart from the over use of "pre-production" and "firmware updates" which should never be excuses for any new camera that has been sent out to testers, I admire that they weren't head-over-heels about it, it's got issues, people need to know

Boom! Like them or not, and I think they are OK, this is going to hit Nikon, because they are v popular. 1M+ subscribers. Even in the short time they had use of the camera they seem to have got a lot done with regards to testing. Does make you think how others at some of these events have been so positive. I doubt they will be at the top of lists for future Nikon events.

DPReview also put up a slightly more critical 'Z7 First Impressions Review'.

I think the niggles are starting to get around, and the one card slot is always mentioned. There is lots of talk of pre-production, but then if it is not very close to how it will be for users don't show it to the media. There is also talk of fixing things in Firmware updates, but that is not something Nikon is known for, so to suddenly get as active as some other manufacturers have been may be a tad optimistic. Time will tell. Obviously some hardware things will not be able to be fixed with a Firmware update. The targets were the a7III and the a7RIII but these camera seem to be around the level between versions 1+2 of those cameras from all the 'hands on' reports so far. They seriously need to get these camera better before the in depth reviews start to be done if that is possible.

Ok, the one card thing, people need to get over fast. It's there, like it or not. I don't remember any such fuss when the 6D mkII came out, it was a bit ho-hum,. but none of this over inflated nonsense about it. The Z cameras have one slot ... we get it! But the rest is far worse IMO. The awful lag I've seen on the live view, the non existence of eye tracking AF [ok, something we never had in the past, but my mid range M43 cam has it!] the 3-axis only for non Z lenses - how about don't claim 5-axis as a feature if it only works for natives Nikon!? - the inability for touch focus when looking through the VF - why?? it would be easy to make it an option! And people are raving about the ergonomics, jeez, i've posted a few times now how it pales towards high end M43 bodies, they could have done so much better in so many ways. No flip screen ... that is a puzzler, I personally don't give a tosh about that, but I know a bazillion vloggers were awaiting it. They're out. And the adapter being a $300+ add on?? LOL ... I thought these cameras were shipping with the adapter originally, but now finding it's a separate purchase at that price, they can really go get f**ked

Does that mean there’s a possibility you won’t be buying one Keith:ROFLMAO:

I could get a loan out tomorrow [I know this guy ...] to buy any camera I want. I don't do it because every time I get this GAS I calm myself down and realise, I don't need this. On this occasion ... I don't need this.

The thing with ‘Like it or not’ is those who do ‘not’ are less likely to buy.

IMHO this ‘Z’ has been ill thought out and rushed to market. Relying on the Nikon name to treat customers as beta testers who should do as they are told and slavishly follow the direction of the Nikon marketing drones and their beancounters and just shell out the cash simply does not fly nowadays. For me, a single card slot with a expensive and very lumpy adaptor to use my Nikon glass on a new body at a very inflated price? Nikon can stick that one in their ass and that is from a guy who has been ‘Nikon’ for over 40 years!
