I am wanting to purchase lenses for Nikon but wanting to do so cheaply i can't afford amazon prices and ebay can be such a battle
does anyone have any recommendations for the Scotland

those lenses are pricy, £1235 and £1169 respectively or there a bouts.

Get an 85mm f/1.8 which will be alot cheaper than the 1.4?

For quality glass, you almost always need to pay top dollar.

Alex,

the 50mm f1.8G is a good, inexpensive lens

When you have enough posts to view, the For sale section on here is good - honest sellers and fair descriptions and reasonable prices

D5100 is a DX body - there are some very good DX lenses around, used

the problem is good is too expensive no one ever thinks of the working class man

Do you want AF?

We all managed without it in the 60's and 70's

Lots of good MF glass around at reasonable prices

For the D5100 you'll need AF-S lenses which have the AF motor built in to the lens. Sigma's version of this system is called HSM. For second hand kit in Scotland, Ffordes sting to mind, look in AP for their ads to get an idea of prices.

i look at amazon and i cry because the good ones people recommend or you hear people talking about are so expensive if there was somewhere that allowed you to pay over time that would be great

Some shops do a deposit scheme and pay over 12mnths interest free, there are finance options but they can be quite high APR. You could always place the cost on a zero per cent credit card deal.

well i would really like 24-70mm or 85mm

You have picked two that are (very) expensive new …….. Nikon "pro" lens will always be expensive

If you want a wide angle, get a 28mm, 20mm or 24mm Manual focus AIS lens - you do not need AF when taking landscape shots and MF is quite quick when you get used to it - £100 maybe

If you want a good all round zoom get a Nikon 70 300mm f4.5/5.6 VR - you will be pleased with the results and should pick a used one up for £250 ……. make sure to get the VR …….. you will enjoy using this lens

If you have a DX body get the 12 24mm f4

There is nothing wrong with the 18 55mm VR f3.5/f5.6 for under £100 ……. it is a really good lens for the money

Also have a look at the reviews of the 18 70mm which are quite cheap used

You do not have to get the £1,000 + Nikon pro lens to achieve very good results

for that camera, I don't think either of those are great choices. They're great lenses, don't get me wrong but if you want a really high end zoom for a DX body I'd be looks for a second hand 17-55 DX f/2.8. Instead of your 85 f/1.4 I'd either go for the f/1.8 which is much cheaper at around £370, or my preferred option on a DX camera would be the 50 f/1.8 AF-S which can be head sub £150

He has a 50mm f1.8D which is a good lens

If he wants traditional "50mm" the 35mm f2.8D is very good and not expensive

There must also be lots of cheap 18 200mm "do it all lens" kicking around …. the original VR version ….. always had good reviews

he could, but nowhere has is said he wants that  and as I'm sure you'll note I said very clearly that was what I think.

read above - it is just when I pointed out the same as you, that the 1.8G was a good lens - he responded by saying he had a 1.8D

but as usual the thread is turning into a debate between ourselves rather than with the OP

I did read - its rather irritating when people suggest you haven't. But I just agree with you. For the camera I think the AF-S is a much better lens then the AF-D

I was just trying to put choices in front of him at good prices that indicate he can get all the "ranges" he wants up to 300mm without spending much money

But as they say "damed if you do . and damed if you don't"

Have you tried Gumtree? I picked up a mint 18-200mm nikkor yesterday. The original VR version.
