Problem is, my mate has picked up a lovely condition FG Nikon but the display in the viewfinder is very dim.
So dim it is hardly readable. It has fresh batteries and the battery compartment is clean.
Any of you learned film experts out there have any ideas please?
Please note that I will have to pass on any message then wait to hear back as he is in Germany at the present and the reply may not be quite instantaneous!

How dim is dim - dim because it is dirty, or dim just compared to other cameras? The screen from the FM2/FE2/FM3a works if you shave off the tab that juts out on those screens; they are very bright (based on my FE2, and the screen I retrofitted into my now-sold FE).

I haven't actually seen it yet, it's in Germany, so have to go from what he tells me!
But he said it was almost unreadable. But from his description, it isn't dirt but as if there is not enough power to the LEDs?

is the lens iris fully closed when mounted?
that would result in very dim.

is it bright just looking through without the lens mounted?

what lens has he got mounted, anything with an apature of 5.6 and above will start to look pretty dim.

It's the read-out L.E.Ds, not the actual view through the finder that's the problem Paul.
No idea yet what lenses are with the body, but they don't seem to be the problem.
I have messaged him to ask for more details but nothing back yet.

Ah I see it sounds like electronics issues maybe dirty contacts in battery compartment.
