Im very curious about the Nikon DF and would love to try one out before committing to buying one but cant seem to find anywhere that hires/rents them out - does anyone know of somewhere that does rent this camera?

Many thanks.

Calumet does rental but I am unsure if this includes the Df.

Hi Tracy, I went to Calumet about a week ago and was told that the df's were in short supply and only buyers could handle them when wearing white cotton gloves! I have tried dozens of new cameras in my life time and this is a first! There are no rentals at Calumet as far as I know.

Thanks Trevor - I think I might wait a while and hope that they become a bit easier to find!

Indeed

Unless it's suggested as alternative to actually trying it yourself. Like the OP is asking to do....

Seems a reasonable suggestion to look at some reviews if you can't get a hands-on opportunity.

Thanks all - I have been reading all the reviews I can but would still prefer to actually get to "hold one" before I buy if thats possible!

I'm a retro fan and would ditch the video capability of other cams anytime :D

I remember reading they are going to be in short supply for a while, they are trying to get the D4s out before the Winter Olympic :)

I use Nikon to earn my living.

I've also used Canon and Fuji .

I'd say exactly the same about any camera. Not sure that makes anyone a 'fanboy'

Why is that a problem - every review is an opinion

They didn't used to be.

It's a shame that in depth testing and careful comparing of the merits against other candidates on the market has been reduced to shouting either "boo!" or "hurray!" whilst getting a mate to film you on his iPhone.

I don't think I would give any credence to reviews 'on an iPhone' - but there are are a number of well-known review sites available that I would look at when considering a piece of equipment ... whether or not I could get my hands on it.
Doing this would give me some thoughts on what to look out for etc when I could get my hands on one - clearly what the O/P tells us she has wisely done in Post #16 :)

Pretty sure the last decent review of camera equipment I read was written by Stuart Bell.

On something like this I'd rather talk to somebody whose opinion I respected who has actually used one in earnest. AFAIK that's only one person in this thread ;)

No mention from anyone yet about how it actually feels in use. Personally, I always read reviews to make sure a camera can do what I want/need (at least on paper!) then get a hands on at the shop I intend buying it from.

Have to admit that I like the looks of the Df but since it's purely a hobby for me, my current bag already holds more than it should (including 2 FF bodies) so am resisting the urge. Maybe when they start appearing on 2nd hand shelves at sensible money but not at the current asking price.

FWIW then, and handling is very subjective.

It's got more heft that reviews would lead you to believe. It feels very solid and comments that it feels plastic baffle me.

It's fairly easy to change ISO on the dial without taking the camera away, same for the EV. The whole 'the dials slow you down' argument is, for me, not one that carries weight.

The hand grip is a little small, and the right hand strap mount point is poorly placed but again, flipping the strap over the hand removes that issue.

AF - it's no D3s. It's good in decent light and pretty much foolproof. In lower light (and by that I mean ISO6400 needed to get 1/200s at f2, for example) it struggles and the AF points that aren't cross-type are pretty average. The AF spread for a FF sensor is also too cramped. Essentially the same as a D600/D610 then, as you'd expect.

The VF is excellent, and the sensor the real winner in this camera. It's as good as you'd hope.

It's expensive, and probably about £500 too much BUT, and here's the kicker, it's a lovely, lovely camera to own and use. The IQ is absolutely stellar, in both good and poor light.

It's an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sorry, couldn't resist it :D ... no offence intended :) :coat:
