Nikon D800......

Right... looking at these lovely photos, I am ready to buy a D800.. where is the best place to find one?? Seems that the prices have risen lately in the UK.. any guidance is greatly appreciated..

Did you find any of the secret passages while you were there Rob, i remember being shown one of them when i was a kid about 45 years ago, only remember it was behind a panel behind one of the large four posters

Check camera price buster. WEX is in the top 5 cheapest, the others I've never used so unsure of them.

I bought mine from Clifton camera's but there now 100 pound more than say WEX , and seems like they no longer offer interest free payments. Which I went for to lighten the hit on my wallet at once.
They were great with the issues I went through also.

Don't think you can go wrong with WEX though.

There are hidden staircases in the thick walls, one apparently leads underground and turns up the other side of the M62, The staff wont tell anyone where they are and some rooms upstairs are now restricted so you can only view then from the doorway and not enter, this was done several years ago to stop people damaging the wooden panels in an attempt to find the hidden places, cameras have also now been installed.

Apparently Cromwell stayed there and was forced to use the "tunnel" to escape

Scroll down for download links. This is for the D800 standard. Instructions are right above the download links. It's pretty simpleand quick, once you have a freshly formatted card and a full battery ready to go.

You want A: 1.01 / B:1.02. This update came out in April, but they upgraded the update in May, so even if yours is showing this version just copy over. I had updated when the April one came out, and recently updated with the same updated version and it seems to have fixed the freeze screen I was experiencing.

That seems a bit strange, Keith.
Nikon Europe website shows the current firmware version to be A:1.01 / B:1.02 dated 4 April 2013.

I would have thought that if a Firmware version was changed in any way it would require a new version number.
Nikon email me when new firmware is available and the last notification was for the 4 April versions.

Well...after months of agonising ( and subtle wife persuading)my D800 arrived today (thank you WEX).

Strap on and battery charging - but I have to go out grrr!! Still will play tonight...now at page 1 of the manual - gulp!!

Fortunately doesn't look that different to my 300s...

I will be back on here...(SOON!) rest assured.

Prepare to be bored!! - I will do a search first I promise!

It was re-updated in May.

https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18257/~/d800-firmware-a:-1.01-/-b:1.02

It shows the additions in the May fix.

I posted the E updateversion on the previous page.

As ever with these things, just double, triple check to make sure you're getting the right one each time. Though I hadn't specified my earlier one was for the E and some one did download and try it. Thankfully it was just rejected, didn't work, no harm done.

I see a note at the top, Keith:-
"Answer ID 18257 Published 03/25/2013 02:08 PM | Updated 05/17/2013 04:13 PM "
which I think is an updated answer to a query.

Further down it refers to a 2012 May upgrade:-
Modifications enabled with this upgrade of firmware, release date May 29, 2012

.

Ah yes, my mistake. But there was an update to the update in May :D anyone who has just recently installed it, in June, will be ok.

Just thought I had best check with Nikon Support, Keith. They replied quickly:-

Thank you for your email.

I would like to confirm that there were no modifications to the A.1.01 B.1.02 D800E firmware since it has been released.

All published firmware updates are final and when any changes are made, they are published under new version number.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again should you require any assistance.

Kind regards,

In that case I installed the same version twice! But then, how come I no longer see that dreaded egg-timer for more than a millisecond? Honestly, it use to hang for a couple of seconds or more at times.

Really don't know the answer to that one. Maybe it requires a certain sequence of events to trigger it. Hopefully it is gone for good:thumbs:

Knowing me I didn't install the update right the first time :D

I have always managed to instal Nikon updates (with some headscratching), but they are not the most user friendly things.

Just a short report for anyone who might be interested - today my Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG arrived. It comes in a strong cardboard box, inside the box there is a somewhat hardened bag with a zipper, which is padded at the top, there's a QA slip, a lens hood, and some more items. All items convey a feeling of value, like the maker of this was serious about making a quality item in every aspect.

A few first images showed that it seems to work well. I'm not a pixel peeper (although I might give the impression sometimes), but for me the focus in short and medium range looks spot on. I have not yet tested long ranges beyond 20 meters.

So far it seems to be a really nice lens, smooth operation, pretty much what I had hoped for so far.

Enjoy, it's a lovely lens, it's been on my D800 90% of the time since buying. The packaging was really slick, towards the bulky, over sized boxes their older lenses came in. As ever though, I put mine away, including the case, still in it's plastic wrap. Useful if you ever go to sell it on.

I am amazed at how good this camera is with the 300/500 F4 on it, the 70-200 is no slouch either.

The only downside, for me, is the "slow" FPS.

I upgraded my pc a while back and it copes very well with the files, one thing I did buy extra was a usb3 card reader, loads faster than the usb2 and cheap enough off the bay.

It does not like TC's though, but in all honesty I am not sure that I need one, with the 1.2 and 1.5 crop options.

I took it away with me last week so that I could get to grips with it, I have an old 28-105 f3.5/4.5 zoom and that was fine on the camera, not as good as my 25/2.8 Zeiss was, but certainly perfectly acceptable quality for a walkabout holiday lens.

Only initial problem so far...

Transferred a Kingston 8gb Compact Flash card from my 300s - re-formatted. Then got card Err message. Tried a couple of times same problem.

SD card was fine.

Put Kingston Compact Flash back in 300s - no issues.

Tried a Sandisc compact flash 4gb and that formatted and worked fine in the 800.

I know the manual says recommended cards do not include Kingston. but used on other Nikons without a problem. I also don't think its a Class II card (whatever that is) and there is nothing to say it is on the Card itself.

Anyone else had similiar?

Cheers

Well I've got a D600 waiting for me at home to try tonight, will see how I get on, if I experience any of the dust issues I could be very tempted to return it for a D800 particularly as there seem a fair few users of the D800 on here who have had and returned the D600 already!

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my D800 and the Kingston cards. Strangely though it would accept the Kingston 1gb cards (not much use in a D800) but anything higher capacity I got the same Err message. I put them back in a D200 and no problem.

After a change to Sandisk cards all OK.

Hope this helps.

Never tried a Kingston card, was looking at CF cards recently and they are nicely priced. But it's not worth it if they won't work of course. Sandisk's better ones are just so bloody expensive.

It does...because a) its not something I have done and b) I was going to upgrade my cards - won't be getting Kingston!

b****r !!

Links here are now pointless!!! :bang:
