Nikon D800......

Why? How much would you charge for a custom machined piece of aluminium designed to fit precisely one camera model (so when Nikon bring out a new one you'll have to redesign)?

I have that exact one for my D800 (though IIRC I paid a little less) and I have a Kirk on the D3S. IMO the Sunway one is actually better.

Once you try one you'll never want to go back ;)
I worked in a computer aided CNC shop and something like that could be made for under £2 if production numbers were high enough ie over 1000 units

That's your problem right there ;)

I don't know how many D800s have been sold but a small fraction of those will get L brackets. Plus there are 4 or so companies selling essentially the same item which divides revenue.

Tough times to have custom stock sitting on the shelf.....

@david357 - they only turn up 2nd hand very occasionally. Almost always when somebody sells a camera since like I say once you have one it's very hard to part with.

I see that Manfrotto make a 'L' bracket that obviously uses their clamps ....

Edit. Reviews on Amazon aren't brilliant. Might be better going for a new head and 'made to fit' bracket.

Made to fit everything - so "fits" nothing.

The custom L brackets are designed to allow access to the battery, remote release, and side ports (HDMI, usb etc) whilst fitted, be ergonomic to hold if you need to grab the camera and are light. That Manfrotto plate will block the side ports and the battery access.

You will only buy it once, and I'd recommend investing if you regularly use shorter lenses (ie without a tripod collar) and alternate between H & V orientation.

My D3 plate fitted the D3s and D3x as well, and fits the D4. You may not have to change it even if you change your body.

it also signifies a good time to seriously consider ditching the Manfrotto QR system, and going to an Arca-Swiss style head (or getting your Manfrotto converted).

Still to try that. ....

It works pretty well. The first shot is usually the worst, with the 2nd or 3rd being considerably better.

The other option is shoot a 3-shot burst in CL mode (at 2 or 3fps). Card space does need watching though if you do this.

That is what I had in mind

Just back from a job on a very windy building site with the D800. Very VERY glad for the sensor clean button as I didn't fancy wipping the lens off and cleaning the sensor in that.....

BTW can somebody save me Googling....why do I get an egg timer every so often after taking a shot? Screen stays black even if it's set to auto play and camera is just busy with something for several seconds. Not buffer or NR before you say either of those ;)

i get the same sometimes and will love to know why?
I suppose is the buffering or some kind of bug.

I'm just guessing wildly, but I never use the monitor and I never get any slowdowns keeping me from shooting another photo. Could it have to do with a monitor related function, like creating and saving the preview for display maybe?

I've been getting it here and there.

Suddenly? This has been happening ages.

I know, what I mean is that now the D600 issue doesnt seem so bad. After all, the fix for the D600 is to do a quick sensor clean whereas there isnt a fix for this issue on the D800 and there are a few who opted for the D800 because of the hype about the dirty sensor issue on the D600.

Fact is that Nikon seems to be using its customers as a quality control team rather than getting its products sorted before releasing them.

I had the D800 before the 600 came out, but I get ya ... I remember posting on here somewhere that my D800 was doing this every now and then, but nobody else seemed to have the issue. It wasn't doing it regular enough for me to be worried though, just the odd time, and I actually thought it was just the slower cards I was using- but now I'm using the fastest I can get.

mine hangs up at least once every time it take it out for the day. I have to take another picture or turn it off for the timer to go from the rear screen. seems like a fairly common issue. My old d800 did the same.

All companies do this and always have done. If you sell 1,000 cameras to pros then you could be looking at a million frames shot a day in all kinds of conditions. That's going to cover more bases than hundreds of hours of testing.

For what it is, it's an insanely cheap camera. I'll put up with a couple of niggles. As long as Nikon are on the case.

Great so in the past fortnight I've found an elusive bug in the D800 and a really rare bug in Pocket Wizards. I'd better enter the lottery.

I knew there was a reason the D4 was so expensive.
Don't get Lightroom 5 then, you'd be sure to delete all your images in that Slide strip related bug ;)

But seriously, beta testing and QA can cost an enormous amount of money. Some of the additional cost of those pro cameras probably goes into QA.

Yep, but it has become an RBB (really bad bug) only now ;)

In LR 4, we still simply adjusted our way of working a bit to ensure the image we thought is selected is really selected ;)

Are they though? Its well over a year since this problem was identified and no solution in subsequent firmware. Heres a thread re the issue from June last year...http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3228273

And keeping in mind, this is one of their flagship products!! Pretty crap service from Nikon!! This with the focus issues and the yellow green tinge on the live view screen!! When is the D800S coming out then??

Theres far worse, new bugs, in LR5
Probably, but just to be sure I'm understood properly - my comment was not geared towards LR or meant to be wisecracking in any way, it was just a friendly joke regarding Jonathan's 'luck' with the D800.

That said, the 'fix' list of the firmware upgrade of the D800 mentions the fixing of a bug which sounds similar to what Jonathan described - was that something else? Or did they say it's fixed but really it isn't?

I haven't updated my D800's firmware yet, I have no issues so far.

rajp, with the D600 I was one who had the sensor dust issue pretty bad. But with the D800 I seem to have been lucky - no AF issues, no colour tinges, no hourglass for me so far.

Oh, I missed that. Must get the new firmware when I get chance.

OK, seems I have the update already, but I see they updated the update end of May? So I've re-downloaded and installing right now, see if it improves anything.

Only takes a couple ofmonths from download to installing, it's actually completed as I typed this post. Just make sure you have a full batt, as on first attempt it wouldn't allow me install, with over half a battery in the D800. had a full one on the charger. Also you'll have to have a freshly formatted card.

Thats good to hear... may be that they have sorted those things now!!

Hi guys first post here. I joined up ages ago and have been reading the forum day and night ever since trying to make my mind up on which camera to buy. Eventually went for a D800e (after weeks of torture D800 or D800e)

Reading this thread in particular edged me towards the D800 in the first place, so thanks very much indeed to all of you.

Now Im looking at lenses, Im wondering does anyone have the Sigma 35mm f1.4 or does anyone here use the Nikon PC-E 24mm tilt and shift. Im particularily interested in those two. The sigma seems like a winner but not sure about the tilt and shift seems like mixed reports on that one, would anyone have any first hand experience of either of those please.

I have the Sigma 35 1.4, it really is a gem. I have my Nikon 24-70 2.8 up for sale right now, because since getting the 35mm it's not getting near enough use.

All the reviews I have read on the Sigma state that it is as good, and even sharper, than the Nikon version [which is twice the price]
