Nikon D800......

Exactly what I was saying, best dr of any slr. What more is there to say??

I own both the D600 and D800. The DR of the D800 is better than that of the D600 but not by a huge difference.

If you want to use the DXO sensor rating as a guide line:

Nikon D800 DR: 14.4
Nikon D600 DR: 14.2

The D3s scores 12 for DR on tha same site.

Even the D7000 beats it.

Still can't help having a nosey in this thread...:D

Was so close to biting the bullet the other day and picking up one of these. Even went home and talked the wife into it.

I have managed to talk myself out of it again for now though.

longer you leave it son the less you D700 will be worth to sell!

Out doing more photos today with mine.

Actually shot in JPEG and turned the sharpening to 7 and am seriously impressed with the files.

Im usually quite snobbish and shoot RAW every time. Pleasantly surprised!

I had a good many reservations about the D800 and basically bought it 'by accident' when I had to return my duff D7100 but so far I have to confess that it is a very capable piece of kit.
It's not the 'feel' of the D3S but in using it whenever I can, I'm getting used to it.

Taking costs and obviously one being more expensive than the other out of the equation, I would choose the D800 over a D3s or any other SLR. Was dreading the notion of having to jump ship to a 5D

I had a major problem with the D800 I bought this afternoon - the battery took an hour or so to charge!

Having resolved that issue, I have to say that I'm as impressed as I was on my first play a couple of days ago. The D700 made "unavailable light" photography possible and the D800 takes that a step or 2 further. I reckon it's also saved me some cash - the huge files crop so well that I don't need to spend a few grand on a 400 f/2.8 - I can crop into images from my 70-200 and get results I'm more than happy with.

hypothetical question really, but, gramps, seems you're very happy with your new toy (i'm glad too) but do you think if your D7100 had been as good as expected & images were as good as lots of others posted around, you'd still be considering the D800, or would you have been content?

I suppose i'm only asking because of my situation with the D7100 & previously felt I couldn't warrant the extra £'s for the D800. (well more precisely convincing my `moneyboss`

The crop you can achieve is scary. Still having huge res after cropping is so refreshing coming from the D700

Part of my reason for buying the D7100 was to get improved image quality/resolution in a backup body and I am sure that if the shop had had a good D7100 to replace it I would have walked out of the shop with it and be posting images with it now.
I didn't intend spending what the D800 cost but I don't regret having done so as the D800 will give me more than the D7100 would have done and I've kept FX.

That's why I liked the D7000 initially over my D700. (mostly for birds) Cropping pics from the D800 must be great in comparison, but how would they compare to the new D7100?

Have no idea! Lol. I would imagine the 7100 is a nice camera. I wouldn't drop from full frame sensor size. The other half had a D3200 which has a 24mp sensor and to be honest I thought it wasn't very impressive at high iso.

There's no doubt the 7100 is a great camera but its definitely not in the same ballpark as a D800

Carl, in Dx mode the D800 gives 4,800 x3,200 pixel images 17,280,000. Not quite the 24.1MP of the D7100 but still plenty to play with! Not sure what the D7100's like at ISO 6,400 but the D800 shows almost no noise or lack of detail up there even when pixel peeping so I would be surprised if either were noticeable on a Dx cropped image printed to A3. Will be doing some real world tests over the next few days.

How does the dynamic range of the D800 compare to the D3s? I thought the DR of the D600 was very good.

It's amazing. It's not just a benchmark figure either. When you start using it, you actually SEE the difference compared to older cameras. When I borrowed one to test before buying mine, it was the first thing I noticed, and the reason I was convinced on the spot. Resolution is nice, but the dynamic range is what sold me on the D800.

I'm happy with my D700 for most things & would LIKE a D800, but don't NEED one tbh. lol
Cheers Tony.

I realise the D7100 is equivalant to approx 54mp FF, but it's the issues of `noise` at high ISO's & actually how they would compare to a crop from the D800 with little birds & feather detail etc that i'd be interested in. (i'm not a pixel-peeper btw)

I look forward to your tests, Nod.
Cheers.

Haven't taken any bird shots with it and still 'new', but I'm impressed with crop-ability.

I still haven't walked around Bristol with the D800 yet, apart from the floating harbour at the Hotwells end.

For what it is, an FX sensor dslr with close to MF res, it handles ISO noise very well indeed. I've used it at gigs and shows comfortably at 2000 - 6400, even got some very usable shots, one of which I had printed large for a friend [big fan of the band I shot] at 10K ISO. Not much by way of tweaking involved. The print was very forgiving to any noise, seemed to blend it nicely.

When I shot gigs and the like with my old D90 I hated pushing it above ISO 800. And before that my old D200, above 400. Sure, you could get usable images beyond that, but they needed much more work in PP. I would have been more than happy the files required a lot of tweaking above 3200, but, they really don't with this beauty

Anyone uses the Nikon 24-120 F4 lens with this camera? Just thinking it could be useful for general use when traveling light with one lens. Thanks

Yes, it's my favourite walkabout lens.

It has the highest DR of any slr. Beats the D3s in every area bar noise at high ISO.

If you scale the images to 12mp the noise difference is negligible

Not sure about the D3s but I would say it is slightly better than the D600

Real improvement over the D3S

Cheers fellas. I bought one today :)

Cheers Tony. I've got a model shoot tomorrow so I'll see how it goes :)

Well my .99p Meike grip turned up today - brand spanking new and in full working order ... an honest eBay'er! :)

Hi all,

Well I just completed my first shoot with the d800.

It went ok and I'm happy with the camera. But I don't like the colours on the back of the LCD. Now, I realise this has probably been done to death but is their anything I can do about it? Is there a workaround or something? I know nikon said they were happy with the colours (and they may well be more accurate) but I'd like to know what others are thinking, what you would do if you share the same opinion as me.

Oh, in case it's relevant I checked the firmware - it's A 1.01 B 1.02

Cheers

The colour cast does suck and its annoying Nikon aren't doing anything about it. I started using an eyefi card to send jpegs to my tablet while I shoot then I preview on that with the models. A 10inch screen does the previews far more justice anyway.

I have never noticed it on mine at all

Also I would never judge the colour off the back screen of a camera!
