Will do.

Found myself the lucky owner of almost a brand new D800 and 50mm F1.8 lens. This is my first full frame camera and I'm loving it. Now I get the fun and games of learning the camera and the menus. Ive come from a A6000 Sony, its also a bit of a change from the D3100 I used to own.

Im pretty familiar with everything but does anyone have any good links or advice for day to day use with the camera. Im still playing with the focus modes to find a comfortable fit but I cant wait to give it a proper outing soon.

Congrats on the new camera, should be one heck of an upgrade.

My normal day to day use mode for my D810/800 is:

Aperture Priority - barely ever use anything else other than M
Auto ISO set at base iso with fixed minimum shutter speed of 1/250 - I move this up or down as and when I feel it necessary and I'll turn it off when using support
AF-S - Single centre point focus - I'll sometimes move the point, but usually focus then recompose. If i need quick, I'll switch from single point to auto
Single shot drive mode - I only use continuous when I know I need a few shots in quick succession

Obviously this suits me and my style of shooting, where I shoot a few different cameras with no AF or sub 5 af points which rely on central focus so I'm very used to working this way. Custom functions can help customize things even more.

Thanks for the info and guidance. Ive found a few good videos on youtube and just learning my way around the placement of certain functions. It already feels very intuitive.

I have 2 questions that hopefully people can help with but both are very different.

1. Can you recommend a CF card to go alongside my SD card for Raw file storage? after some first hand experience so I can buy a recommended brand people have uses.

2. Any advice for a Astrophotography lens. Ive looked at various Sigma and Tokinon lenses but read different things for both.

I tend to stick with lexar or sandisk cards be it SD or CF. 7dayshop tend to have very good pricing on lexar. As to your second point, you want a lens that is as fast as possible (i.e large aperture) and one with as little coma flare as possible. Best lenses I know of for astro are samyang. The 14mm f2.8 for ultra wide and the 24mm f1.4 for wide. I use a nikon 20mm f1.8 as it's what I have, but it needs stopping down to f2.8 to minimise coma in the corners. The only note worthy point about the samyang lenses is that they are manual focus only, which is fine for astro work but can be annoying for those that don't like living with it the rest of the time.

Thanks for the advice, Im happy with the manual focus because its only for astro or wide landscape shots. Thanks for the advice

Driving home this morning after a nightshift I popped to a local Dam, after setting up the tripod and looking at the scene I wasn't too happy with the awkward light (bright/dull scene).
Not a great capture to be honest. It was showing minus 4, cold as.

Looks like a place worth going back to though. I came back from my night shift this morning. Nothing anywhere near as pretty!!

Taken from the other side of our living room. New for me to just be able to shoot a shot then know I have the detail to crop it down for the exact image I'm after.

I love the d800!and its detail. I have to say the d800 made me slightly sloppy! When I went to the d750, I was shooting quite loose as I was used to the d800. reminded me to tighten up my framing a bit better.

That's still a very nice image Peter [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Up in town again today, managed to eject myself early (!) and spent an hour with the 800e, my favourite 20mm, and to test a 24-85 VR I picked up used after a recommendation from @anibap.

I went upto the top of Tower Bridge, luckily I had a defibrillator on me (12 flights of stairs and male pride refusing to take a break [emoji38]). I was very lucky with the sunset.

Was looking out from Blackfriars station this evening at the sunset thinking someone would be getting some awesome shots. Turns out it was you.

#1 & #2 for me are "Excellent" shots Gregg, I'm guessin' they were shot through the safety glass (if it's still there) up in the bridge. #3 is also a very nice shot but for me personally is spoilt by the string of lights in the top left.(y)

George.

Thanks George, they've actually got little Windows now on the bridge especially for cameras, but the view is obscured by the bridge structure, so a small zoom works really well [emoji106]

Last one for me - I'm not bothered by that string of lights, there's a well-balanced counterpoint to it in the top right-hand diagonal. I also like the idea of shadows being held back, more realistic than the others.

The real winner, though, is the D800 - amazing bit of kit!

Great results there Gregg, how are you finding the zoom? I may get one myself ad your shots may have removed any final doubt. Where did you get yours from ?

Hi David, my first impressions are that its great when stopped up a bit. Not as consistent as the 20mm g but that may be the user [emoji38]

I got it used from Wex as I had some credit, it's a damn bargain.

He he!

I'm wanting something a little wider aswell, but not sure if I should aim at the 16-35 or 14-24 or 15-30 Tamron. I know the latter two won't work with my filters but I'm still learning with the filters hence they don't get used much so that's not an issue yet.

Decisions...

Edit - I won't buy any of the above, just GAS. I think ?!

I've a 'as new - weeks old' 16-35mm f4 VR if you need to side shift your 20mm, just a thought.
