Nikon D7xxx owners thread

You can set it up to be the first item in your custom menu, so it would be nothing more than a couple of button presses away, or you could set it up to your fn button at the front. One button press.

Thanks..... another tick in the upgrade box.

Another option would be to set it up on one of the U modes, then it's even less work. I have ISO control in my my menu but I have to say I don't bother as I find Easy ISO so simple to use.

Firmware upgrade available today - really only seems to be for support of the new 800mm lens but maybe a good idea so your camera is up-to-date :)

I wonder if there any other tweaks n goodies they just aren't telling us about.

Rumour has it that there is a new value upgrade fix that adds a grand to the 2nd hand value.

Oh no ... wait a minute, that was yesterday :bonk:

I want one if those updates where a hand comes out if the camera and slaps you when its out of focus.

Boy I'd have a sore face

I just saw the firmware update, undecided it I'll apply it if it's just the 800mm support. But then I do like being cutting edge*.

*read as it will be done before bed time.

Was out for a walk yesterday and managed to get very close to a robin. Quick check on the lcd showed i had got good focus (always troublesome with little birds).

Got home and noticed that i had framed the shot badly, as i was using single point focus on the centre, i put the birds eyes in the centre thinking and managed to crop its feet. Boo

Lightroom just popped update with the 4.4 update for me

This update includes bug fixes, new lens profiles, and support for 23 new cameras including the Canon EOS 1D C, Nikon D7100 and Samsung NX300.

Fingers crossed it isn't lying.

That was quick of Adobe!

Wow. very sharp indeed. Is that RAW out of the camera?

Its an edited raw. I find i edit all raw files, even if to just add little contrast and clarity. Also lightroom by default (i think?) adds a little sharpness.

I have to say having had my D7000 for about a month now I'm delighted with it, I'm not sure why I ever returned the one I bought last summer!

Seem to use the 35 f1.8 mostly although my Tokina 11-16 is also a cracker of a lens, I'm really looking forward to taking it to Paris later this month!

I've just ordered a Nikon 24 f2.8 lens from Amazon as well as I do like a 35mm (35mm equivalent) field of view but will see what I think it may end up going back and being replaced by a zoom (17-50 likely), overall though very happy with the camera, I'm glad I bought it when I did even though I missed out on the £100 cashback! and I don't think I'd have bought the D7100 in its place.

Hi there - anyone use an external monitor on their 7100 ? I use a 7inch Lilliput LCD (HDMI LINK) for copy stand images. I have noticed the following differences in behaviour from my 7000 - can anyone shed any light on why ?

1. exposure and other data do not appear on the Lilliput although they do on the cam LCD. The image as seen by the lens is fine and same as LCD .

2. The rear LCD on the Cam does not turn turn off when the ext screen is live (another reason to use the Ext screen is saving the battery when doing a long session with the copy stand).

n.b. The camera memu sytem shows up fine on the lilliput albeit on the rear LCD as well.

This is because it has clean out video feed for recording on external recorders. I believe it can be changed in menu

This is designed so it can be used with multiple monitors, people and you can have a camera op, focus puller etc all using different screens. I think this can also be adjusted in menu IIRC

Are D7000 new prices becoming crazy bargain time?

£629 for body only, plus £100 Nikon cashback available, so £529 with a full 2 year warranty.

Whereas second hand (warranty variable if any) are around £450 body only.

Surely a no brainer to pay £79 extra for brand new and 2 years warranty?
Or until 2nd hand prices drop a little and widen the gap? :D

In my opinion i don't think they will drop considerably further (when you include the cashback). If I were in the market for one I would be purchasing now from someone reputable like Amazon. The price may go down a few quid further, but not enough to outweigh the risk of them selling out and the fact that I would be without an excellent camera for that much longer.

I am feeling quite smug that I paid even less than the current price including cashback and have had the camera a while.

that's what I did, bought a new one from WEX last week.....

I think it's at the point where they are selling them more or less at cost, Nikon I mean not the stores. If you want one now is the time to get one.

Other wise you're looking at the D7100 (the buffer puts me off that one) or erm a D600? I still would like to see a "D400" as I do think there is a market for a good fast DX camera.

You're probably right, Nikon happy to sell off the D7000 stock at cost until it all runs out.

Just gotta persuade the wife this is a good upgrade. :nono:

:D

I see the D7100 still has the littl rubber flap for the AC adaptor on the grip. I know this was a bit of a negative for some on the D7000 as it come loose easily.

Is it the same on the D7100?

Whoop got a d7000 today! Sat waiting watching the flashing light to stop flashing. Lol

It's also on the D600 and D800. Never found it an issue myself to be honest.

Pmsl I love it. Tbh I want expecting that much from the d90 I have. But was very wrong. The iso and generally quality are much better. That and the other features, brilliant cam

Nikon's current cashback offer has been enough to tempt me to upgrade to the D7000, probably in the middle of May. However I have a slight nagging doubt which may put me off, and I'm hoping that someone much more knowledgeable can reassure me.

I've read all the glowing reviews of the D7000 and completely understand that's it's a great camera, but I still have a slight nagging doubt that it's yesterdays technology, being now over 3 years old. Am I being daft? I'm sure I'll still be happy with the D7000 in 4 years time, and I can't really justify the jump in price for the D7100, unless of course I wait till this time next year. Any thoughts will be gratefully received!

The D7000 is around half the price of the D7100 but from the reviews I've read has 95% of the newer ones ability......it's a no brainer unless you're minted

Not sure its 'over 3 years old', was announced Sept 2010, released a month or so after.

I would assume the jump in quality and features from D60 to D7000 would be eye-opening for you and the D7000 seems to offer the best value in crop right now. (and still the 2nd best along with the D300S crop body behind the D7100? )

I personally wouldn't worry about what will happen in 3 years time. How long have you had your D60? Did you think it was the bees knees when you bought? Probably. I'm sure the D7000 would do the same.

Buy for now, you're getting a brand new 2 and a half year old 1k camera for £539 with the cashback offer. Even less if you go second hand.

Zachary is right, the D7000 is a very capable camera. It may be 2 1/2 years old but it is still very good and one of the best you can get for the money. The D7000 is currently only £539 with cashback, next year you still won't be able to get the D7100 for anywhere near this price. The D7100 I would guess it would be around £800 next year. Even D90's are currently around £400 new if you can find one.

apologies if I have missed it but has anyone checked what affect a lower fps has on the buffer issue?

for example, putting it on CL at say 4fps how many raws will it give before slowing down? Is it a noticable improvement?

Zachary is right
Zachary?

Another angle I thought is that improvements year on year have slowed down.

In the 3 years from your D60 coming out until the D7000 things moved on leaps and bounds. I would suggest less so in the 2.5 years between D7000 > D7100, hence people suggesting the D7000 is 95% the camera the D71000 is?

And in reality, how much better will things get in the next 2 years?

Many thanks for the replies folks, I suppose I was just looking for some reassurance before spending the cash! I quite often suffer from buyer's remorse (although it doesn't last for long), but this time it was pre-purchase jitters.

Can't wait to get my hands on one, and as everyone says, it's at a fantastic price at the moment.

Best wishes,
David

received my £100 prepaid cash card of Nikon (thank you very much :) ) and spent it

i really really want one - I've done soooo much reading about them and the differences ( on paper )...its a shame that I have to actually buy one first in order to see the difference in picture quality :bonk::D
