Nikon D7xxx owners thread

To new owners - throughly recommend easy iso mode where the iso is adjusted on a control wheel. I used to use the automatic ISO mode where you would specify a minimum shutter speed, and if that couldn't be achieved it would boost the iso to achieve it. Also recommend having iso in the top display rather than shots remaining.
Personally I reverse the direction of the adjustment wheels and metering to be more logical to me - but that is the beauty of this camera. It is is so customisable. Have fun.

Cheers

if I was to go ahead and purchase, what would people recommend for a good walk about lens. I have read good things about the 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G

35mm f1.8 G cheap as chips and light and sharper than any zoom. The clue is in in your question, "walkabout". Zoom with your feet. A great lens

I had a Tamron 17-50 which was great but I always wanted a 17-55 and eventually got one a couple of months ago, the extra 5mm in the long end is a big plus and built like a tank. There is currently one for sale in the classified.

Generally whilst the 16-85 does have good reviews. I feel you'll probably always want the 2.8 of other lenses.

However if you don't crave the 2.8 then why not go the whole hog and get the Nikon 18-200.

Shame. AFAIK the D7000 didn't have this problem and banding was discovered in the D5200, wonder why Nikon did nothing to sort this out.

I bought the tamron a little while ago.

I very hastily sold it as whilst it was good for the price... it was softer than I'd like it to be wide open and the AF consistency wide open was poor. Add to that my 18-200mm is mostly used and my desperation to get my old lens back (105mm vr), the tamron had to go.

If I were to get another normal zoom, it would have to be the Nikon 17-55. That would have met all my requirements.

For now, I'm happy with an ultra wide, my superzoom and a macro which doubles up as my low light lens :)

It says "With a class 10 SD card it will only do 5 frames(Jpeg fine) before the buffer is full and the frame rate drops to 2.5 fps ! What! it wants chucking in the bin if that's right.Nikon manage to make a balls of it again.:shake:

Is that not to do with the larger file sizes and card speed rather than the camera?

Would the camera come with latest firmware if bought now or would you need to update and have the initial problems been sorted?

You would guess that wouldn't you! Seems strange to do the test with such a slow card.

As the video linked above shows, with a 45mb/s card it is possible to get more than 50 jpegs in one burst. Adequate i would suggest!

Chances are that you will probably get one with the latest firmware installed. It all depends on where you buy it from and how long they have had it for in stock?

This link shows that the entry level D3200 (also 24MP) can write 16 frames before the buffer is full: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d3200/9

While this link shows the D7100 manages 7: http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00bT2o

Do note that the D7100 shoot at higher frames per second, but once the buffer is filled, it takes longer to clear. So depending on what & how you work, the D7100 may or may not be the right camera for you.

I concur, just tried a CH series on my 7100 (not purchased for that mind) and I get consistently 6 frame before the buffer fills. Nothing to do with card as it's got an extreme pro in it rated @ 95MBs.

thanks for the replies folks. The only thing stoppin me ordering at the min is the focus probs. Torn between this and the canon 60d. Not tied to any make socan go for either. Just much prefer the look of the d7000

Forget the focus, there are very few with problems and if you are unlucky enough to get a body with focus issues there's nothing that a quick trip back to Nikon can't sort!

I think it's a bit silly...

I have a 6fps body that can only write 4/5 raw frames before slowing down...what's the point in having a reasonable burst rate??

It's annoying to know that unless I want a good burst, I need to switch to to jpg.

I haven't tried a memory card that clears this issue up.

Still very annoying though - both my bodies had the problem.

Unforgivable really, especially when "upgrading" from a D90 which has never had a recorded focus issue. Is it just poor QC? Or a lack of customer focus?(excuse the pun:)).

What did you do with both your cameras?

I have just got a new Nikon 17-55 and it requires -18 dialling in.

Just about to buy a second D7000 too as my second body.

Sent the first one back to Amazon in a fit of pique!

Then bought a second one and spent some time "calibrating" it.
I'm -15 on all my lenses.

Need to send it back to Nikon when I've got a minute!:)

Is there any cost in sending it back? I could look this up myself but being lazy.

Doing a wedding in 3 weeks so will address this after that.

I've just ordered a D7000 off Amazon - super excited! Hopefully there won't be any focus issues like I've been reading on quite a few threads. Paired up with my 17-55, 35 f1.8 and 85 f1.8, should be a great match! In time, I might need to upgrade my 55-300mm. Can't decide whether to keep or sell my D3100. Quite attached to it, so might keep it as back-up.

Yeah it does make me wonder what Nikon is thinking in its line up. But i don't shoot sport, so the extra expense i would need to spend to get either a d4 or a mythical d400 wouldn't be worth it.

The key features of the d7100 coming from the d300s
  • good sensor
  • lighter weight than the d300
  • ability to turn on auto iso quickly, and also link shutter speed to focal length
  • U1 and U2
  • Better Live view implementation

And i can still do the following which is important to me
  • programmeable fn key so i can still use afon
  • zoom to 100% with one click
  • good bracketing

I lose
  • Buffer. But i only used the buffer for bracketing.
  • 10 pin connector. I liked the connector with the thread.
  • A undetermined amount of build / weatherproofing.
  • The 'pro' tag

AF - S mode Under what circumstances do you select 'auto' for point selection ? I have found no advantage with using auto - in fact the camera often selects 'unlikely' options .

It's free - saw a thread on it recently, and you send the camera in via Nikon Europe - details on the servicing website.

Regarding the problems with the buffer. Do folks consider it to be a hardware limitation or could it be a firmware bug?

How easy or hard is it to calibrate it?

Its niggling me, if I buy one I would be ****ed off if I am having to do things like that but I desperately want one

Picked mine up at lunch time & the battery is on charge.
(Will probably have to wait until tomorrow to try it out)

There is a full thread on lens focus fine tuning!

I posted a link to it in this thread a few pages back!

On my phone at the minute I'll link to it later unless you find it or someone else links to it!

You should also remember that it's not always the camera busy that it at fault when it comes to focus problems. My d7000 needs no focus compensation dialing in when using my 50mm f1.8, however it needed - 18 for my 18-50 sigma.

cheers folks

I will have a look for that thread cotty.

Just a quick question but might sound a wee bit stupid, what are the chances I will have to do some calibrating. Is it more likely?
