Nikon D7xxx owners thread

Congratulations on the little one :)
Don't worry about clogging the thread up - it needs brightening up a bit in here but I blame @minnnt for that as he posts all his landscapes in the D750 thread;)

Don't forget all the other random crap i post in there too. :D

Maybe i should upgrade my D7000 to the D7200 so i can clog this thread up too? ;)
Your landscapes are far from crap - quite often find myself browsing (with some jealousy) through the D750 thread.

That's the way we like them ... children that is not pics! :D

just ordered one ...... a D7200 .......... I'm expecting my images will then be as good as @gramps ......... if not, it's his fault
(still reckon that it will not be a patch on the D750 cropped - but you never know)

soon be a D7100 and a lightly used D700 for sale along with a good D300 ....... if I can find the boxes ........ I need the space ........ why do I never want to sell any camera kit??

LMAO its so good to know I'm not alone

I got a 7100 today. I've been using a Dynax 5D for the last...7 years. A learning curve moving to Nikon but I'll be using it for a long while.

when I use Auto ISO no actual ISO used at the time of taking the shot, (i.e. pressing the shutter), is shown in the Viewfinder ......... cannot find where I can change the VF info in the menu?

Found d8 - Easy ISO when composing - is that the solution?

did you get a paper User manual with your D7200 or have Nikon now replaced this with a download version

any help would be appreciated

If you have an iPad then download Nikon Manual Viewer and both the manual and menu guide are available there to download (and free).

Don't think you can, it just flashes 'auto-iso'.

I agree i dont think you can but if you set the lowest shutter speed your happy with and the widest aperture your happy with knowing isnt going to make any difference,if its that important then you would need another mode to use,i find i get a feel for high medium or low iso but i tend to only use one lens.

in auto iso it only flashes auto iso, for ease of use if you have a tablet download Nikon user manuals and you can get manual on your tab makes life easier,
I got paper with mine,

Yes Bill, if you can live without exposure comp on a dial, switching easy ISO on should then show the ISO value in the VF.

I use easy ISO for this reason. Showing the ISO value in the viewfinder allows you to make adjustments to shutter speed/aperture without taking your eye away from the viewfinder. I only ever use auto ISO in manual mode as then I have control of shutter speed/aperture and the camera chooses the ISO. I see auto ISO as another semi automatic mode just like aperture priority or shutter priority.

Thanks guys

I use Manual mode 99% of the time ........ easy ISO is fine ...... but I would prefer to also see the actual ISO that will be used when I half press the shutter, (as on the D750 and D700) .........

Having checked my D750 and D7200 side by side I can see Bill means. It's not that he can't see the ISO in the viewfinder but the fact the ISO value disappears on half press of the shutter button to display the buffer count. The only reason I can see for this is the D7200 doesn't show as much information in the viewfinder compared to the D750. The D750 shows additional info such metering mode symbol and number of shots left as well as ISO value and the normal exposure data. To display the buffer count the D750 can use the space taken by the number of shots left whereas the D7200 is space limited so has to use the ISO value space to show the buffer count. I think this is down to the D750 having a large FX viewfinder with extra space for more info and the D750 being a higher fx model hence more features. It's not something I've noticed before and probably wouldn't have noticed if Bill hadn't raised it.

there is option there for it to show in BBF, until shutter is pushed, that is why I mentioned it,
sure it goes out when shutter is pushed, but info is there, the way I look at it new camera something to get used to,:)

Walter - as I quoted in my original post - it's d8 - I know about that - Robs point is the one that I was making

Your right that's the only work around but only any use if you use BBF. With BBF ISO value still appears until you press the shutter button. As the buffer count is only relevant when the shutter is activated, perhaps nikon may release a firmware update to still show ISO with the shutter button half pressed.

I've just tried this BBF work around, ISO is still visible whilst you focus with BBF but disappears when you press the shutter button either fully or halfway. It's not the same functionality as the D750 but it seems the best it's going to get.

I realise that, I was pointing towards another option,
d8 bbf= iso showing, push shutter take pic, if you don't use BBF its no good,
my only concern was to help:)

I just changed settings to d8 in the Menu

as with the D750 - I would like to know what the ISO is when I half press the shutter ....... presumably it is the same if you use back button focus

When the BBF button is pressed ISO stays visible in the viewfinder. When you press the shutter button fully or halfway it changes to buffer count.

I'd rather have ISO displayed than remaining buffer - it would be nice to be able to set your preference in the menu. If Nikon were like Fuji they'd read this and address it in a firmware upgrade. I kind of know when the buffer is full ;)

I kinda know what i set the iso at though...

Why do you need to know what the iso is anyway?
If your using auto ISO in manual mode then the camera is choosing and altering the ISO value. My auto ISO is set between 100 to 3200 but I always want to try to get the lowest ISO possible hence I want to know what the camera is choosing. It's a bit like not being able to see the shutter speed or aperture value in the viewfinder if you are in shutter priority or aperture priority. It's all about managing the exposure values to the available light, having all 3 viewable just makes it easier.

as Rob indicated

I shoot Manual mode 95% of the time and knowing the ISO info constantly is really important to me - or maybe it is something that I am used to seeing and it feels strange without the same set up as the D750 ............... especially, as far as i can see the UI is similar apart from this ........... and I move between the D750 and now the D7200 quite a lot at the same time........ I welcome the up to 1/8000th sec on the D7200 over the 1/4000th sec on the D750 ..... really strange that they limit the D750 to this ...
