Nikon D750 & D780

Quick, easy and a lot of luck...managed to find a Tamron 24-70mm VC for £400:cool:

Hoping there's no complications with this order now:rolleyes:

Well there IS a complication.

Got my D750(still trying to get my head round everything-first time trying a Nikon...ever) and I try the Tamron 24-70 first(before the Sigma 105) and at 70 it was screeching away. Tried it other ways...all fine. Went back to the way I had it...fine. Kept trying to get it to repeat the noise and it did. On the phone to LCE and let them hear it. Ok return it and we'll you, your money back or send it off for repair. £400 is a good deal, but I'm not going to trust it, so I'll have my money back.

You'd think they would fully test it before sending it, but I suppose it could have been from shipping to me. [emoji849]

So back on the hunt again...

That's what I wasn't wanting to hear lol. I could have got the 24-120 with the D750 in a kit from Panamoz for about £440 more.

I really do prefer to have a faster lens over the extra reach mind you.

Got a few lenses to consider...

Anyone got the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 on the D750? Only thinking vocally, as I've just got the Sigma dock and I'd be as well making good use of it with two Sigma lenses...

Don't you just hate it when the light is great so you make the effort to hike up Curbar Edge to capture the sunset only for a blanket of cloud to completely cover the sky  Oh well, here's hoping for a miracle gap in the clouds
Well I got no break in the clouds, but did manage to take this before the blanket of cloud came over. Still trying to decide whether I like it or not

The old 24-70 won't work with the dock and it doesn't hold a torch to the other 24-70's. If you want the best of the best, just get the Nik version. It's worth it.

Thanks for the info. Would love the best, but the bank balance says no. Will look further into the 24-120 to tide me over till I CAN afford the 2.8.

I have both and can't say I prefer the f2.8 over the 24-120 TBH, 70mm is surprisingly little reach on FF. Also, IQ wise there's little in it, the f2.8 is marginally sharper and has nicer bokeh, but it's subtle. It's AF where the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 excels, night and day between this and the 24-120mm.

For me the 24-120mm is a better everyday/ walkabout lens, the f2.8 is better if you shooting in low light and/or need fast AF.

That's a nice image, but something doesn't sit quite right and I can't put my finger on it...
Ditto. Think it's the composition.

I've been used to the 24-70 2.8 II on the 6D, so not fussed about the length, but it looks like that's the way I'll be going.

Well my first day of testing the lens out...in work:( and I'm not a fan of the Sigma 105mm. I went for the D750 because the 6D hunted about for focus, even with a Canon 100mm f2.8 IS macro L lens on it and this Sigma is worse. Need to look into the Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF VR Micro Lens.

On a side note, I think I've managed to find the 24-120 I should go for...just need to get some refund's back in first, before going for it.

I can't seem to get single shot set up with all the focus points selectable...can anyone help me? I'm used to be able to take one single shot, but easily change between the 9 available focus points, but I can't seem to work out how to do the same with the D750.:help::coat:

I've owned and used three macro lenses (Sigma 150, Nikon 105VR and currently Tokina 100). I think focus hunting it's just a macro lens thing at close distances. For close up work I set the camera to fire on focus and press the shutter release, then focus manually (or move the camera back and forth) - the exposure is made when focus is achieved. At greater distances autofocus is OK, but slow compared to non-macro lenses.

No macro lens is great at AF, but I don't find the Sigma any worse than others I"ve tried. Is it the old model you've got or the OS?

As for the AF points I'm not sure what you mean but having single point but easily changing between the 9 as there's 51 points to choose from  Anyway, there's a button in the middle of the AF/MF switch on the front of the camera. Press and hold this whilst turning the control dials to select all the different AF modes. One dial changes from AF-C to AF-S and AF-A, the other selects the AF mode such as single point, 3d tracking, group etc.

Not sounding good for the macro lens. :( The only time the 6D and 100mm hunted was when the item I was taking a shot of was near black. I had to focus elsewhere and recompose. Wasn't perfect, but with all reviews etc of the D750, I hoped with the much better focussing system and better DR, it would be a good move. And yes, the Sigma 105mm is the OS version.

When in AF-S, I can only select Auto, Group and S. When in AF-C, I can select Auto, Group, 3D, d51, d21, d9 and S. I was hoping to be able to get d51/21/9 when in AF-S?

^^^this. For close up I use MF too. Does shutter being set to focus or release make any difference when set to MF? I didn't think it did as shutter focus/release is an AF feature.

Well I'm amazed that the 6D and Canon combo focussed better. I've not used Canon so haven't had any personal experience but from what I've seen the Canon behaves no differently  What scenario and subject distance are you struggling with? Are you sure it's nothing to do with the focus limiter?

As for the AF-S you should be able to select all the AF modes including d9 etc. What shooting mode do you have it in?

It was great, no doubts about it....probably just as I say below...

Camera is in M, but I'm sure I've just not got something else set up correctly.:D

It's in the menu somewhere! I have AF-S set to fire on focusing, and AF-C to fire on shutter release (for focus/recompose purposes).

@drb5 you can't select the d9/21/51/3d in AF-S. It is only available in AF-A and AF-C. The dynamic modes are used with continuous focus and they use the surrounding focus points to increase the focusing ability whilst tracking. It uses more battery power though.

@snerkler I've reserved comment of your pic until i was on the computer. I think you have been a bit trigger happy with the adjustment brush on the rocks. The view is good, the composition is ok but the foreground light is wrong and doesn't look natural imo. Take it back a bit and i think it will improve it. I see it was a HDR, have you let LR auto tone it or have you done it yourself?

Both, got a bit carried away with the brush though ;) Here it is without my stupid tweaks. Think I was so fed up with the light that I tried to force it  :$

Much better. Doesn't stand out like a sore thumb now. :D You got a nice glow to the sky.

Haven't been to Curbar in a while, tomorrows forecast looks dire but Sunday morning looks like a possibility though.... Depends if there is a chance of an inversion or not. If there is i may head over to Chrome and Parkhouse.

Thanks

I'm thinking of Mam Tor if there is, but I need to recce the place first.

Might be that I need to use AF-A in that case.

Trial and error :)

But that would involve you getting up early and putting some effort in... Not really any need to recce it, just park up and follow the other togs. ;)
Yep, turning over a new leaf,..... possibly ;)

Ah yes, think I was having a 'moment' earlier when I said you could use d9 etc in AF-C, makes no sense that they can be used in AF-S  :$

#2 is a winner. The headless official in #1 is distracting.

Which 85 Chris?

Nikon 85mm 1.4 :) shooting the actual race was an utter crapshoot, completely rammed and then the orange coated officials come out at the last minute and block everyone's view!

Think I'm in love with my 85mm 1.4...

Must say Chris I love mine too, but, I don't use it as much as I should. You should do though doing weddings. It's kinda the lens I always wanted and so will never let go. The new 105 looks good but you really do need some distance for that FL, at times the 85 can be quite tight.
