The first is brill mate.
Was it done with Nik by any chanceCheers mate, had to do a black and white take as there's a bright yellow sign on that building behind the meerkat

So I tried this out of curiosity today and the range does indeed reduce considerably using BBF.Found where I read it, http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3386481?page=4#forum-post-50922834

Someone on my FM thread recently discovered that the VF confirmation range increases dramatically when AF is set to MF (on either body or lens) vs leaving AF enabled and using back-button focusing as a way to avoid triggering a lens refocus when checking for VF focus confirmation. I always use back-button focusing when I DotTune but I told everyone in my video to disable AF because I thought is would be an easier procedure for those who aren't already familiar with back-button focusing. I failed to test that step before describing it to others, sorry!
When I toggle AF/MF I see an immediate change to the confirmed range. Here are the results of a DotTune with AF enabled vs AF disabled:
My theory is that Nikon's firmware is intentionally expanding the in-focus range for VF confirmation (when AF is disabled) to make it easier and faster for photographers to manually focus. They probably figured that if the range were tight it would be too difficult and time consuming for people to manually focus to it.
- AF enabled: -14 to -18
- AF disabled: -2 to -20 (past end of -20 range)
So here is an important update to the DotTune method described in the video:
Note that when the body+lens are set to AF the VF confirmation display wont stay illuminated for the duration of the metering timeout like it does when the body or lens are set to MF. This means you have to hold the shutter half-pressed to keep the confirmation display active while checking for the dot."
- Configure your body for back-button focusing by setting "AF activation" to "AF-ON only". On this D800 this is option a4
- After establishing critical focus of your AF target, leave the body and lens to set AF rather than switching to MF
- During the DotTune VF range-discovery procedure (step 4 and 5 in my video), use a half-press of the shutter to turn on the VF confirmation. In my video I said you could use either a half-press of the shutter *or* the AF-ON button, but now that we're leaving AF enabled you must use a half-press of the shutter.
Yep VR should always be turned off. That being said with mine turned off the results were wrong IMO as mentioned above. Very odd.In reply to Snerkler- forgot to quote
**** pretty sure I left the VR on but as on a tripod should have been off I suppose ( anyone read the manual?) Mine came out at +6 and +12 so set it at 9.
That's a bit of a wait, where've you ordered from?Just as an update my 24-120mm should be here on the 17th April....all in one

Has anyone ever bothered to send their camera and all lenses off to Nikon to be calibrated? Is so what sort of cost is involved and what's the safest way to ship all ?
I'm not jealous at all [emoji14]Eeek: bit the bullet and just bought a D750. Also have an 85mm f/1.8g arriving next week, hopefully to coincide with the arrival of the body![]()

Ps hope you left some over for Mrs pjm1's sweetener!
Ah, just like the time he buys another car so I get to buy a piano. Not quite a balanced deal, really.I tried suggesting she takes my old Pentax out but she wasn't up for it. We're off to Arran in a week's time and I can already sense an "upgrade" to a better hotel coming![]()

On another note, I think I'm finally going to get around to installing the latest firmware on my camera, did I read somewhere that you can save all of your user settings before updating and then reinstate the settings afterwards? If so would anyone care to share how to save me rummaging through the manual please?
Edit: ignore this last bit, have found how to save and load settings. Does anyone know if it saves the lens MA's as it doesn't say in the manual although it does say it saves all non-CPU lens data which seems a bit odd?
Looks like I'll be waiting ANOTHER 7-10 days to get my camera back. WTF??? They get deliveries once a week from Nikon. Even though they knew it needed a new screen last week, they didn't order it until Tuesday... So it won't arrive until next Wednesday then they have to do the repair, then send it back...
Fab.

All my lenses barring one need fine tuning, but my 70-200mm is baffling me as it seems to change every time I put it on, and also differs with VR on to VR off. Test shots also conflict with real world shooting. With VR off both Dot Tune and graded lines at 45 degrees would suggest that it needs +20 or more, but to get the sharpest real world shots it needs +15 with VR off, and +12 with VR on. This is one of the reasons that I'm going to do the firmware update to see if there's some weird gremlin that sorts itself out. Also, when I send it in for the shutter issue after the Marathon I'll ask them to check the AF module (risky I know). Failing that I'm tempted to send in my lenses with the camera to be calibrated, I just don't like the idea of sending my 70-200mm through the post, and imagine cost with insurance will be heftyAre you having fine tunes issues? Which lenses are affected?
Tamron 85mm 1.8vc is $749 (£521) from B&H photo yet we get charged £750 at Park Cameras!
It is, and quite a bit of extra heft too. Weighs as much as an f1.4That's a very big premium just to get VC/VR on that lens (versus the Nikon). That buys quite a lot of tripod, L-bracket etc![]()

Not a D750 owner anymoresent it off for part-ex against a D810 and it's just arrived, couldn't resist with the current deals. It was a GAS thing and not a need, as I wanted one when I came back to Nikon from the Fuji XT1. Managed to pick up a minty, like new, 80-200mm f2.8 lens for me to try out, hope the weight won't be to bad when shoulder surgery has fully healed.

It is a lot! Especially as the 85mm is just over £300 grey! Maybe I shoudl try the 35/85 combo again.... for the 3rd time![]()
I hope you shot that with an ultra wide angle and it's just perspective distortion... otherwise that GIANT SD card ain't gonna fit in the slot
(sorry, silly comment but I don't understand why they put them in such disproportionately large boxes!?)
