Nikon D750 & D780

Off to London in the may this year, first time I've been since I was about 12. Will have the whole crew so not sure how much photography I will get to do.
Will be taking the d750 and probably my 24-70, though I would prefer wider I think.
Will i get away without a tripod as i would rather not lug that around.

can anyone recommend good places to shoot as i have no idea about the city, we are staying northumberland ave so quite central i think?

How is it for walking about with expensive kit? I'm always a bit dubious when visiting a new city for the first time being a country boy.

Continuing from what Andy said ... Don`t forget the museums too. Just a short hop on the tube, and they`re all together.

Anyone upgrade from a D700 to D750 - how was the transition? What's the usable ISO with the D750, I would happily use 6400 with my D700..

Transition was easy, but the 750 feels tiny at first. Beyond that, I`m happy with mine.

London is very safe generally!

Northumberland Ave is pretty central and only a very short walk down to the Embankment. Lots to shoot along the thames, walk up to Parliament Square and Big Ben or cross the river where you will find the Millennium Wheel. South Bank always good place and really comes
alive at night. Tripod not essential during day, although I would take one, but obviously essential at night which is my preferred time for London. Jump on Tube and within minutes you can be at Tower Bridge or St Pauls or wherever, really very easy.
You should be pretty safe as most places full of people, but I take normal precautions of just being aware what and who's around you and try to stay away from dark isolated places. I usually take my 24-120 and is wide enough for nearly all shots.
Couple of St Pauls from my last visit.

Your fine walking around with any type of gear. I was walking along the Southbank and also Westminster the other day and its full of tourists with some of the most expensive camera gear I've ever seen. Plenty of people just using tripods everywhere including the middle of the path and nobody said anything or was asked to move along.

.

Thanks good to hear.
I know the wife already got the big land marks, big ben/ london eye etc planned as well as the museums.
I was more interested in getting out at night when her and the kids were in bed. This was mainly when i was concerned about

Covent garden is only a short walk from where you are staying, so plenty of street stuff to grab. From there you could venture into China town too.

South bank is great too, from Waterloo along to Tower Bridge you can get some great night shots

Hi all

This camera (among others) is on my short list. I have just sold my EM1 and 12-40 2.8 pro lens. Im wondering what lens you would recommend that would be of similar quality on a sensible budget! My main two lenses used were the aforementioned and a 45mm 1.8.

The equivalent lenses would the Nikon 24-70 F2.8 and 85mm F1.8. 'Sensible budget' well, that's up to you... :D

Room for a little one?

That D7200 lot were far too boring for my liking, so I've decided to come over here instead. Because everyone knows that a camera's ability to take good pictures, is solely based on how many pages its thread on TP is.

Just kidding D7200 guys, it's nothing personal ;)

Tricky one that as the obvious like for like lens is the 24-70mm f2.8 but it's a heavy beast and pricey, although used ones are now going for under £700 privately. I would suggest another option, the 24-120mm f4. It's as sharp as the 24-70mm, lighter, cheaper, and obviously has extra reach. Obviously there's a stop less light, and a stop more DOF (up to 70mm). However, compared to the 12-40mm Olly the 24-120mm F4 will still give you a stop shallower DOF so better for subject isolation, and the ISO performance of the D750 will make up for the stop of light loss, and then some.

The 45mm is a cracking lens tbh, it still surprises me every time I use it. The 85mm f1.8 will be comparable sharpness wise, but of course you will get at least 2 stops shallower DOF on FF.

For those of you that sent your D750's in for the shutter 'issue' how long was the turnaround? I'm finally thinking of sending mine in for the shutter 'issue' as I think I may be getting an AF module issue too so may as well kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks, David! :)

Right, first things first... can anyone recommend a screen protector? :exit:

Good question. Imo this very subject hasn't been discussed enough, it should be of utmost importance to all d750 users. You need a larmor.

Got my D750 back in November, big step up from my old D80 and still getting my head around the features it has. One I took last week of a cascade in Regents Park.

What's the shutter issue? Anyway to check if buying 2nd hand?

The very early D750's have had two recalls for issues. Mine is allegedly one of those affected, but I've never experience either (and I tried to replicate it ;)). First was a flare issue where, in very extreme unique situations where there is a very strong light source just out of frame glare could cause an unusual shadow, and the second was a shutter issue where in certain situations (can't remember what off the top of my head) the shutter caused a banding. All you need to do is input the serial number on the Nikon site and it'll tell you if it's one of the early ones that was affected.

Lol, so you're back. I knew you would be ;)

Yes I am back... Glad I am too as like you and a few said I must of had a duff one and I noticed that myself after trying one in store a few week ago.. This one is just a different camera I just can't believe it honestly it better in every ways. I reckon I had a faulty sensor or a faulty AF.. or possibly both.

This is VERY fast at AF faster than my last one..
