Nikon D750 & D780

Was due to go in for my shoulder and elbow operations tomorrow, but the Hospital phoned late yesterday afternoon to cancel, they have re-booked for February 23rd. A bit disappointed, as I had prepared for the op's and the sooner it was done, I would have been ready for spring time, if it ever arrives!

Anyway, I have bought a Nikon 1.4TC to go with my 300mm f4 prime and been trying it out over the last week or so. Managed below pic of a Coal Tit in poor weather and shot through double glazed door @ iso 2000, pleased with the performance of the combination and the AF doesn't seem to be suffering.

Youre getting some great stuff with that lens. Seems to suit you.

Lovely shot Simon. Is it the 300 F4 PF lens?

Thanks both.

Anibap, it's the middle version of the three they have made, the AFS one. > http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-nikon-300mm-f4-d-af-s-if-ed-lens/p12882?go=kits_bundles&mkwid=sbhkgrcov_dc&pcrid=78104887209&kword=nikon 300mm f4&match=e&plid=&gclid=ck7uudnpzmocfyvpwgodpvwlzg

From what I have read regarding the newer PF one, optically/IQ there's not much difference between the models. The PF one takes the 1.7 & 2.0 TC better and is lighter along with the addition of the VR. This is my second one and I have found the performance excellent on the D750 so far, against the one I owned when I had the D7100 for higher ISO.

I bought a Kenko 300 PRO 1.4 TC a couple of weeks ago and it would allow to take one shot then the VF was blacking out, up on releasing from body there seemed to be a release noise as if it was snagging on mirror or something?? So I returned and managed to get a mint Nikon1.4ii TC from the forum. From my use so far I cant see much if any degrading along with AF speed, it will be nice to give it a run in better light.

I have kept my Tamron 70-300mm VC lens for going out and the 300mm f4 lens is for my wildlife uses at home. It's currently too heavy for me to hand hold so is set up on a tripod by the kitchen door.

I had one do the same on my second D750 after about six weeks use, on one corner. Amazon kindly sent me a replacement.

What I have always done is wipe the screen with some IPA to remove any grease etc.... and then blow the screen with a rocket blower and then fix. Only had the one problem over about ten different cameras. I suspect I had a faulty one, for the one failure?

No joy from amazon unfortunately (been too long). I`ll contact larmor and see what they say. Thanks mate.

Looks pretty good to me Simon, and that setup of yours is very nice.(y)

Put your snake away

@Swanseajack id love to take photos like that but have neither the time or the patience. Awesome shot though

Thanks Both.

Tim, it's surprising what a little bit of cheese or peanut butter can do, for them to land where you want;). I'm lucky as we back onto woodland and countryside, so get a good variety of birds in the area. With me being home, these little birds keep me just about sane.

We're in the sticks as well, and leave next to a creek so get all kinds of wading birds/herons and I see owls on my route to/from work. But yeah patience isn't my strong point!

Bought and tried three copies of that lens, have you ever had one?

All three copies had severe back focus issues at the wide end and slight front focus issues at the long end and couldn't be fixed using the Sigma dock. Not a lens I would recommend.

Its good to hear from someone who's tried that lens actually, I'm going to be looking for an accompaniment to my 58mm and the Sigma primes are the obvious contender but the 24-35 is only £100 more than one of those lenses so I was considering it given the great reviews it gets based on IQ.

Have no doubt if you can some how find a good copy that it would be a great lens but after three attempts I won't be trying again.

Seems like an eternity since the WRC, can't wait to get out and shoot some brum brums! 2 more weeks to go until i venture down to Wales for the Cambrian Rally. More filth!

I'm guessing the light won't be this good...

Then there's the Snowman in Scotland and Riponian in North Yorkshire. The Snowman Rally might be pushing it, but the Riponian should be a go'er! Anyone else going?

Sounds like the usual Sigma lottery Tommy. Seemed like they had got their QC together with the Art range, maybe not.

I might manage the Riponian, however there's rallycross at Croft on 7 March, and I don't want to cash in all my brownie points and pass outs too early!

Cheers,

Simon.

Yeah I'm a little wary of getting a duff lens when I'm not even sure I'll like it!

Yeah it almost seems the USB Dock at £40 is a "required add-on" when you buy one of these lenses, will need to ponder, the 24-105 Art seems to get cracking reviews as well.

I know I've said it before but that first image is just perfect. Ever thought of trying to sell it to the driver/team?

The first shot is "Excellent" m8, nothing more to be said on that count. The second shot is also right on the money with spot on framing, exposure, and very good panning technique.(y)

"You're nearly ready for F1".:D:D

Sounds utterly boring Simon. Forget Croft and have a day out somewhere else! :D or grow a pair and attend both. :P

Cheers mate. It was imported to Lr and i never processed it. I favoured other similar shots at the time but boredom and a lack of shooting makes you look at things in a different light.

Have you ever seen the quality of shots that the teams use? This could maybe pass as their doormat to wipe their feet on but nothing more.

Cheers buddy. I better get honing my skills then...

I'd be interested in info on this as its not too far from me.

6 - 8 500 bhp supercars leaving the grid together to race on the loose using at most cut slicks is anything but boring :-). Pretty much non stop track action from 0930 to 1600hrs as well.

The Riponian is a good event, and the entry so far looks excellent. Always very popular with spectators, and that's part of the problem as not many of the stages are accessible to spectators. It's close to Helmsley as well, which means a visit to 'Hunters of Helmsley' is mandatory for a delicious pork pie :-)

I'm worried if I attend both, I may not have a pair to grow anymore at all!

Let me know if you are planning to head up and I'll see what the craich is.

Simon.

The thread needs a bump/:)

So where is everyone based, in this micro community of D750 ness?

I`m down on the NW Kent / SE London borders :)

All done in camera (apart from levelling), Paul. It took a lot of tries to get the horizon anywhere near level!

I suppose it's in my user name, down in Swansea South Wales.

A little family history..........My family settled in the area after the war, my Great Grandfather was from your neck of the woods in Deal, his wife was from Salisbury and where my mother was born. My Grandfather was born in Bilston West Midlands and he moved to Leicester as a kid. They settled down this way after the war and my mother married a local and we have stayed here since.
