Nikon D750 & D780

Nah, just leave it in FX, then crop if you need to.

I have some somewhere, but I've shut the main PC down for tonight, so I'll dig one out tomorrow.

Saw a 35mm DX for £55 yes £55 but didn't get it as DX damn it was used in local post office window advert.

You a sample? Do u set d750 to DX?
I don't use DX mode as I find framing is not quite as easy as you have to really keep an eye on the border markers. I personally would never buy a DX lens for a FX body.

@UaeExile how do you find that LG monitor? Which model is it? I was looking at their curved range as miss having a dual monitor set-up. I went to a single 1440p monitor but miss the extra pixels to layout all my open windows.

Unfortunately, the 58 is slightly further down my shopping list still. I really need a FF second body, the D7000 struggles massively compared the the D750 and if using primes properly it's much easier than changing lenses.

Probably stick with the 35/85 combo for now but a 24/58/70-200 might be the plan by next Christmas.

Anyone using the sigma 24 for weddings? The 35 is ace, love the colours and it focuses quickly, wondering if the 24 is the same. The new Nikon 24 1.8 is also fairly interesting, paired with a 35 though the 20 1.8 would probably serve me better. Basically I want more kit!! Lol

The second body I was supposed to get fell through so I picked up the 58 instead. That still leaves me needing another D750 but that can wait until after Christmas.

I love it.

It took me months to decide which one to get after dropping my MBP and smashing the screen. It was a case of having the retina display replaced of for the same price get a flashy new monitor.

I wish I could say there were technical reasons why I chose the LG but it really was just a case of "that looks f-ing amazing!!!" :D

That 58mm looks superb. Luckily its too long for my type of shooting otherwise I would be even greener!

Yup that's the one I want :)
It's a lot of money I know but I spend so much time at my desk I figured it was worth splashing out on. Also there weren't many with thunderbolt to choose from.

Bit late to this discussion but am I the only one not that impressed by the 58mm? All the shots just look unsharp to me

Seems to me the aperture blades stick on the 58 preventing it stopping down. Shoddy quality control on a lens of that price.

Don't think it's a quality thing, just the rendering is designed to be soft. If I want soft photos I don't need to spend that kind of money :p

I think you need to look at more shots ;) Obviously wide open at f1.4 at close range DOF is tiny so most of the frame will look 'soft' ;) But yes it is probably softer than todays super duper sharp lenses, but I love it as the shots seem to have more of a film look, which I've been wanting to achieve for ages. Sometimes digital can be a bit too clinical imo.

Also I believe Nikon deliberately didn't correct all flaws such as spherical aberrations so that bokeh stays nice and creamy. (Happy to be corrected ;))

I only bought this lens a few days ago and you're right. It's about as imperfect as you're likely to get from Nikon in that top price bracket and I wouldn't recommend anyone buying it without trying it out first. I did some fairly extensive testing (with actual people and not charts) comparing it to the top end 50's from Canon and Sigma and I was blown away. The extra 8mm makes it slightly more flattering for portraits and the fall off in bokeh is about as good as money can buy from any system. A proper homage to the older lenses that I used to love.

But I do get why it's a marmite lens... Wide open it's softer than almost all of my other lenses, especially at closer distances, it's also made from plastic and the vignette wide open is extensive. If you're looking for a tack-sharp lens there's better options out there like the Sigma 50mm Art. If you're looking for something a bit special; for me this is as good as it gets from Nikon

Here's a good review from Shotkit. http://shotkit.com/nikon-58mm-f1-4g/

Yeah, I know exactly what you are saying - it is designed to give you that effect.

I am just not a great fan of that 'look' I suppose :exit:

It's probably my all time favourite rally car. Well, no probably about it. It is. Sounds amazing, tail happy and they look awesome. Don't get me wrong, the new WRC cars are an incredible sight and their raw speed and power is to behold but a mk2 being thrapped around some of the best forest stages in the world just has an extra bit of special to it.

A little like the 58mm...

They are uber cool, but I actually prefer the Mk1 tbh. Used to love seeing them in Chatsworth when the Lombard RAC rally used to go through there (at least I think they were Mk1's, it's been a long time and my memory's a bit fuzzy ) My all time favourite Rally car is probably the Lancia 037, but the Metro 6R4, RS200 and Lancia Integrale were all super cool too. Oh, and of course the original Audi Quattro ;)

Shame it's all in Wales these days. Well, unless you live in Wales. If you live in Wales then it's fab!

The Grizedale Stages were on today in the Lake District but i feel like I've been neglecting the family a little of late so decided to give it a miss.

Thats why i love the original fuji x100

If they have all the old classics it would be ;)

Takes me back to the days when Ari Vatanan and Hannu Mikkola were throwing the Mk 2s around the forests. Film and no auto-focus in those days though. Felt happy if I got one reasonable shot per roll.

I'm exactly the same. If i get 1 reasonable shot from a 32gb card. :D

My hit rate is unbelievably low mind. Think that's just because the last six months I've literally been shooting anything and everything. It's only recently i decided on what I actually want to do with my photography.

I wish i could decide tbh Adam. I like to shoot a bit of everything so find that i haven't been able to finalise my lens line up.

I'd like to add the 58 but it's a massive outlay for me.

Yeah it was for me too. I could only justify it when my second D750 fell through.

The way I see it I don't need it for another two months and I've got 2.8 zooms to sell and cover the cost when I need the extra body.

I've pretty much settled on shooting portraits/people/weddings and the 58 on my D750 is perfect for that.

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with shooting a bit of everything, stops it getting boring and also gives you more to learn :)

Managed to get out with the 750 today, absolutely love it, handles so easily. My god it was cold though, the photos don't show the -5 wind chill!

More to follow, having a Macbook meltdown moment!
